Internet Sleuthing: Rashan Gary's Injury Status

Submitted by Maison Bleue on October 17th, 2018 at 4:00 PM

I was perusing The Victors Club board over at 247 and saw some discussion on Tarik Black's injury. In the discussion thread umbig11 chimed in with this:

Which of course is good news in regards to Black, but the additional news about Gary is very concerning. Another poster responded to him and this was umbig11's response back:

Not good, Bob. There was an additional thread on the board about Gary being shut down for the year ala Bosa and umbig11 chimed in yet again with this:

So at the very least, it seems Gary won't be back this week :( and is possibly considering shutting it down for the season... Why can't we has nice things?

Hopefully, I am not breaking MGoRules by posting these screenshots from a paywalled thread. I figured umbig11 posts inside info here regularly and he doesn't work for 247, so fair game?

Depending on the nature of the injury it could impact his draft status enough (drop from the 1st round) that it may be in his best interest to come back for his Senior year.  If I'm not mistaken there are incentives to being drafted higher vs. just being drafted?

Yes, how much money you get is directly a factor of how early you're drafted. Importantly, a lot more of your contract is also guaranteed the earlier you're drafted. The #1 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft Baker Mayfield has an estimated total contract of $33M versus the #32 pick Lamar Jackson's estimated total contract of $9M. And the drop-off becomes starker as you move into later rounds. And very little if any money is guaranteed once you get passed the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

Paye and uche have done a great job filling in. Hopefully Solomon and kemp are close to 100 percent as well.

mason is going to play?

black is going to play? (Would be huge)

Whatever. Defense is fine without Gary. I think mason is more important. His vicious personality and play can be contagious

Gary has been hurt seemingly his entire collegiate career. Is his draft situation really that comparable to Bosa's?

Gary has the best measurables anybody could ask for...but there are legitimate concerns about his skillset given his relative lack of production.

Is it outside the realm of possibility that he shuts it down this year and focuses on getting healthy, then comes back for his senior year for a chance to play his way to the top of the draft board?

I agree that he’s gone. Don’t agree that he makes it to the top 10.

Some guys are injury prone and others aren’t. Great combine numbers don’t erase an unresolved history of recurring injuries.

I hope he goes and gets his money, because coming back and getting injured again is going to cost him a lot of cash.

He may comeback for the OSU game and perhaps the championship and playoff games. If it is an AC joint problem, odds are it will probably will not get much worse. If it is a chronic injury, he will have to deal with it through his NFL career. If he is out for the season it may hurt his draft ranking.

My understanding is this injury happened last year and he reaggravated it in fall camp, and the feeling is he hasn't looked good playing through the injury and it might hurt his draft stock if he continues to play and not look dominant. He may only play in the OSU game.

Hypothetical -- if we were to play Wisconsin again this year and we have no Rashan, what should the strategy be?

I would prefer to see a heavy dose of Solomon and Mone on the inside and consider kicking Kemp back out to the SDE spot. I know Paye held up relatively well and there are other options, but I think part of that was driven by Chryst's ineptitude as a game manager more than anything else.

If I’m Rashan Gary there’s a zero percent chance I play another down at UM. Taking double teams from 300 pound lineman with shoulder problems has to be brutal. I don’t really see him returning and improving his stock so he’s best to just sit out and prep for the combine. The combine is made for guys like him so he can improve his stock there.

I enjoyed him as a player but he wasnt Jadeveon Clowney either. We will be a little weaker without him providing depth but I think we will be fine on the edge without him.

Its the interior I want to see healthy again.

I need to stop getting hyped up for recruiting rankings; it seems our top guys never hit their projected ceiling (Gary, Green, Morris, Walker, etc.) but some of our “diamond in the rough guys” play lights out.

Im fully behind Paye, Uche, and Hutch. I can’t wait to see what these guys accomplish wearing the winged helmet playing for Michigan.

Hopefully one is our next Winovich, and Solomon/Dwumfor turn into the next Hurst. We still have some awesome guys who will suit up and play for their team and teammates. We also have some of the best coaches who will make them successful on and off the field.

I love Gary and he can do what ever he thinks is best. But he’s not ready for for nfl.. he disappears in games, Uche, and paye both get after the qb better than Gary. Gary can play the run very good but that’s not what gets you paid at the next level

Yeah, he disappears while absorbing double, and sometimes triple teams, freeing up other guys to wreak havoc on the line. Man some people on here are such clowns. If Gary's time playing for Michigan is over, I thank him for all he did for the program and hope he makes tons of money and wins some championships at the next level.

He will get doubled in the NFL as well, and face plenty of teams with good enough OL play where he won't need to be doubled as much. Most of the "lack of production" talk is pretty fair....he has had plenty of good games, but I can't think of one game he absolutely dominated. He needs to learn a couple better pass rush moves, and honestly become better at splitting double teams rather than just hold up against them. In my opinion if he came back healthy and had a dominant senior year, he would reach that top 10 pick potential. But I'm with you, if he decides sitting out the rest of the year to focus on the draft is whats best for him, I can't be mad at that. Dude has given his all to Michigan and is a true program ambassador type player.

Does Winovich get doubled teamed?  Chase has been the better DE the last two seasons.  I think this is more of Gary having a nagging injury so he can preserve his draft status.  And nobody is questioning Gary being injured but I do think this is a business decision.

Does UMBig have 2 different accounts on 247? Because there is a ‘umbig11_scout’ and also a “UMBIG11” with the same avatar as he uses here on MGo.

Seems to me that the reference to "more realistic than what you think...not quite the same thing, but very similar" is likely that he has a choice to make.  He can probably keep playing dinged up and he'll probably be productive, because he's Rashan Gary.  BUT, eventually this is going to require surgery, so doing that now will have him back by the Draft Combine.  Playing the season out and then doing the surgery would have him miss the combine and would negatively impact draft status.  So...it is not quite the same thing, but similar...

Bosa could come back this year and is choosing not to (but he doesn't need any more surgery...he'll be full strength in a few weeks.)  Gary won't be full strength at all this year unless he has surgery.  Just my speculation of course.

I've actually seen Dr. Meyers in Philadelphia for the same injury (I think).  Bosa has a sports hernia (not what you think is a normal hernia).  Essentially, his core muscles ripped off the bone.  It makes cutting and moving extremely painful, especially laterally.  In most cases, athletes, especially well-conditioned ones, are back on the field in 6 weeks.  Dr. Meyers sees most of the patients you've ever heard of with this injury (A-Rod, etc).  So that's how I know...or at least, that's why I believe it is an acceptable inference based on my real-life experience.

Umbig11 used to have some street cred but the way he acted after ND really put me off. Didn’t act like a guy who would be so connected to the program the way he bashed the players.

The issue I find (and this is not necessarily the case with UMBig11) is that guys will claim "insider" info when they can sorta just report rumors that have a good chance of being right, but then you dig into it a bit and their connection is far more tenuous and limited than they intimate.  I honestly don't remember the guy's name, but there was someone who used to claim connections to the program and it turned out he coached the guy in like, Pop Warner, and heard a couple of rumors from a family friend or something like that.  He had limited information, mostly just family talk from a guy on the team, and would say some rather outlandish things that were either mostly incorrect or simply guys venting.

Lmao exactly. He's got info, but acted like the sky was falling and said we'd go 8-4 after Notre Dame, and that Nebraska was going to be a tossup. I think he's a good source for unreported rumors, but I think he's absolute dogshit at analyzing football, and part of me deep down thinks he holds some sort of grudge against Jim Harbaugh, because his opinion on him flipped pretty quick for almost no reason.
