3rd String QB - Joe Milton? Wherefore art thou, Brandon Peters?

Submitted by boliver46 on October 15th, 2018 at 1:47 PM

SIAP or discussed but I have been dealing with a family matter and am not caught up in all things Michigan.

I noticed in the follow-up after the game that it was stated (paraphrased), that Joe Milton has taken over as the #3 QB.

Having a hard time finding out how or why Milton passed up Brandon Peters.

Is Brandon Peters hurt?

Thanks in advance.

And to defray negs due to my ignorance of the situation - here is a funny image that has Always Been Here.

I have it on no authority whatsoever that Brandon Peters will transfer at the end of this year. In other words, this is a guess. Since he is clearly #3 at best though, a transfer wouldn't be terribly out of the question. Maybe it hinges on whether Shea comes back next year?

All speculation.

It's possible. It is likely that Peters is still the #3 guy. But Milton came in for a gadget play (actually just a designed QB run) which meant that the Wisconsin game counted against his four games that he can play and still maintain a redshirt. With that in mind, it made sense to give him a couple of live snaps once we got into garbage time.

I don't think it means anything for the pecking order this year. Its effect on next year? That's a different story.

Thanks Stephen.

This quote is what stuck out to me:

"Joe Milton—who seems to have taken over the third-string spot—rushing twice for 22 yards."

Is it just as likely that they held out Peters to preserve his availability for 4 other more competitive games later in the year - but still retain his potential for redshirt?  Or maybe I am just ignorant about how this all works.

Seemed like Milton was SituationalQB1 but still may be QB4 on the depth chart. Maybe he passed Peters. Who knows. Here's to hoping we never find out!

Clearly Peters has been passed by McCaffrey.    Given that DM has one more year of eligibility I'm confident Peters will transfer.   He enrolled early and hopefully he can graduate at the end of the '19 school year, transfer and be able to immediately play with 2 years of eligibility remaining.

Because going somewhere else to sit out this season and not play would be better? Instead of having the opportunity to learn from one of the best QB coaches in the game for a couple more months and have the opportunity to play if a couple injuries occur. And, if he wants to guarantee he is going start somewhere next year, it would be better to make that decision in April/May than before recruits sign, NFL early entries, etc.

Also, he needs to graduate to be able to transfer and play next year if that's what he decides to do.

Possibly.  But that comes with several downsides.

First of all, he's probably on track to graduate M in three years.  So if he sticks it out another year in A2, he gets his degree in spring 2019.  If he transfers sooner, then there may be limits on how many credits he can transfer, in-residence requirements, school-specific course requirements, and other obstacles that could delay him getting his undergraduate degree.

Second, if he transfers as an undergraduate, he has the one-year disqualification and can't play for his new school no matter what.  If he stays at Michigan, there is always some possibility he could play this season even if he's way down the depth chart.

Third, if he's transferring for playing time, then it's in his interest to transfer somewhere he knows or is pretty darn confident that he can start from the get-go.  Being able to do a graduate transfer and play immediately upon arrival gives him that ability.  If he has to transfer in, wait a year, and then compete for a starting job, then lots can happen in the meantime; offensive assistants or even the entire staff can change, key receivers and other teammates will come and go, new recruits will come in, etc.

All of this seems to substantially outweigh the benefit of having an extra year to study a playbook.

A possible scenerio is that Peters is the 2nd (or 3rd) string QB but he got hurt and is now being held out to save a medical redshirt. Coach did something similar for Shane Morris IIRC. What would be telling is if Peters ever comes in again this season.

No, it wouldn't, unless he can show that the original redshirt was also medically necessary and the NCAA approved a waiver.

You don't get one academic redshirt and one medical redshirt.  If you want eligibility across 6 seasons, you need to show both were medical.

Rumor is that Peters was limited or injured earlier in the year.  I never heard what the injury was or its severity.

He looked limited in garbage time of Nebraska game.  He just wasn't moving around well.  He was the third QB in that game.  Milton never saw the field in that one.

I don't if Milton has passed him on the depth chart for the season or if this was just a one game thing because of something we saw on film about Wisconsin's defense.

I hope Shea stays another year, but I would feel good about McCaffery taking the reigns next year.

I will say it again, I read inside information in January that Brandon Peters will never see a significant snap at Michigan again, unless there is a string of injuries to the players ahead of him. And it's because of not protecting the ball. It's not the turnovers, but HOW his turnovers happened.

I've also read that Milton is being prepared for RPO plays, at this point, and not as a pocket passer. But that's at this point. His touch can still be developed, which will open the possibility of being a pocket passer. He needs A LOT of work on it though. But, there's another factor for Milton to deal with, Cade McNamara, who is having a great senior year. He lead a great game winning drive about 3 weeks ago. He really sacrificed his body running on a 4th and 7. He did get the 1st, just barely. He is looking like he could be a great at Michigan.

Brandon Peters needs to graduate early, and grad transfer in January.

He's a great kid. I feel bad for him that this is happening to him. But that is life.

What happened on that Milton play. Almost seemed like he botched it and just fell forward into the line. Seemed like a strange call and a waste of a down. As Brian's cohort on the podcast said an 18 year old kid getting his first snap in primetime before 100,000--he's mostly just hoping he catches the snap.

According to umbig11, Peters pulled away as the clear #2 in fall camp. Have to imagine he was playing pretty well with how strong Dylan has looked so far. I do think he would have gotten the nod at ND if he had not been injured

Idk when UMBig11 said we looked more like an 8-4 team and that Nebraska might be a close, toss up game, was when he lost me. Dude may have some inside info, but he is far from the end all be all in regards to processing and communicating potential information. Also reading between the lines, sometimes seems like he has a grudge against Harbaugh, which, ok.

My guess, peters and coaches both already know his plan, graduate in spring and grad transfer with 2 years left. So what’s peters point in playing during games and risk get hurt. Just go through the motions in practice and dress for games to keep things appearing smoothly

Most insiders said McCaffrey was clearly #2 in Fall Camp. Listening to how Don Brown and Jim Harbaugh talked about McCaffrey, he was #2.

It is likely the only reason Peters was named #2 before the season started was to keep him from transferring if he was named #3, what he actually was.

There never was a time when Peters and Patterson were in a neck and neck race for starter.

I think if it were to come down to it, i.e. Patterson would be injured, I would assume Mccaffrey would be first one up and I hope Peters would be the backup. Same goes for next year should Patterson leave. I think Peters still has the talent, and even if the coaches think Milton is better, Peters has the game experience to give confidence should he need to come in.
