Northwestern Postgame Presser 9-29-18: Jim Harbaugh Comment Count

[Barron]

Things Discussed

  • The comeback
  • Shea Patterson's performance
  • The defensive shift from first to second half
  • The holding call against Higdon. Yes, there is righteous outrage.

[After THE JUMP: I still can't believe they won that game, honestly]

Coach, you had a big deficit to overcome and it culminated with a big drive, then punching it in. What do you take from your quarterback on that drive and just, the team as a whole?

“Well, that’s a lot of guys, really left it out there. Played their hearts out. Tested in the ballgame and had to show what we were made of. And, like what we’re made of. Starting with the quarterback, really, I thought he really, really stepped up big. Took the game into his hands in a lot of ways there, in the second half. Defensively, there’s gonna be a lot of people to single out, who played great. After the first quarter, our team really, really played tremendous defense. Allowed just over 100 yards in three quarters of football. So, lotta guys — Donovan Peoples-Jones, punt returns, everything, he was leaving it out there. Josh Uche, some of those speed rushes he had on the edge were huge. Chase Winovich, the entire ballgame, thought Rashan (Gary) really played great. We started getting our hands on some balls there, when we needed to, after the first quarter in the secondary. Hurrying the quarterback, and also the adjustments our coaches made throughout the game, especially after the first quarter and the first half, were superb. They were really working. So, hardworking night on the coaching side. Great to see Quinn Nordin make those field goals, we needed every point we could get. And also Kwity Paye, thought he really stepped up. Bunch of guys, Josh Metellus … lotta guys really showed their mettle tonight.”

Coach, how big was it for the defense to shut this team out in the second half, and given the huge gap in penalties, does in underscore just how tough it is to go on the road in the Big Ten?

“Penalties should be tough on the road? Tougher on the road than — Warde Manuel told me to let him handle that. No comment.”

How about the defense in the second half, shutting them out?

“Just great. Don Brown had some tremendous calls, a couple that really stood out, we got a free runner to the quarterback and that was big. Cause he was sitting in the pocket, he’s a big guy, was making some really accurate throws. Receivers were catching balls in tight windows. We started getting our hands on some of those balls in the secondary and we started applying pressure. That really helped us stop their running game, too. They played a hell of a ballgame.”

Talk about how your depth on the defensive line factored in, especially in the second half of the game when you were able to finish off so many of their possessions with sacks

“Yeah, it was really impressive. The guys in the middle, (Bryan) Mone, Lawrence Marshall, and then (Mike) Dwumfour would come in and he was really active all night. The ends, I think Chase had one of his better ballgames. Just the way he was flying around and hustling all night. I mean, play after play after play after play. Kwity Paye, also showed up, as I said, Josh Uche. Two of those speed rushes went fast and powerful. Good, Aidan Hutchinson got some time as well. I thought the linebackers were running good, making tackles. We missed a couple tackles on the first couple drives, but thought the tackling was really sound the rest of the ballgame.”

When a game — you get behind on the road like this, it can really go sideways. What can it do for a team when they can scrape together a win like this and prove something to themselves?

“It can do a lot. Like I said, talked about it at halftime. We were being tested, this is time to find out what we’re made of. And our guys really responded, and they were in a kind of fashion where nothing was — had to be done, it had to be made by players. I think coaches had some tremendous adjustments, but I said, guys like Shea (Patterson), Nico (Collins) stepped up and made a couple tough catches. And Karan (Higdon), thought he had a heck of a ballgame. Guys up front, really grinded all night. And got it done. Was a lot for a team.”

Jim, did you get an explanation on that holding, on the Shea run?

“Yeah, I asked for it specifically, just to make sure they didn’t come back later and say it was some other player. Cause they called it on 22, they called it on Karan, and so I asked the referee, ‘Go ask the side judge who he called it on.’ Just so it wasn’t some different explanation days from now. So he came back and said it was on the running back. Holding the linebacker. The whole stadium saw that the linebacker tackled our running back. It was a zone read. Faked it to the running back. Their linebacker tackled him, and Shea ran for 28 yards. Then they tacked on 10 yards for holding. Phantom call.”

Coach, you chose to receive instead of defer, is that gonna be a game to game thing just by feel? And then to what do you attribute the slow start offensively?

“I thought they had a good plan. They have a tremendous coaching staff, their players were playing good. Yeah, just, they were playing good, and we didn’t make the first downs on our first couple possessions. And then they made first downs, made drives, scored the ball in the red zone. They had a really good first quarter, both offensively and defensively.”

And then choosing to receive or defer, is that a game to game thing, just by feel?

“Yeah.”

Ok

You mentioned getting your hands on the balls. In their first couple possessions, they do that quick tempo, short yardage passing. How did you make adjustments to stop that?

“Yeah, just seeing the ball. Seeing the ball more in the air. Kinda made an adjustment in the coverage and kept the ally. Continued to dial the blitzes. They did a nice job. They were prepared, they did a nice job blocking our twists, so we countered that with an adjustment, and got home free three times. They were well-prepared coming off of a bye, that’s that kinda stat. … Great coaches and they were prepared — as soon as we saw that they were picking up that twist, we went to a different one.”

Jim, I know you mentioned a halftime challenge, the guys were being tested, about the same way Notre Dame started. You guys think you’ve grown a lot in those four games. What — at halftime, are you like, ‘We’re gonna find out now how far we’ve gone?’ What does this whole thing show you?

“Yeah, just, I mean, what you’re made of. When you take that out and continue to execute, you can execute better than what you did. So yeah. Pretty self-explanatory. Got the mettle, you know, got the gravel in the gut to win a game on the road, under tough circumstances.”

Jim, somewhat of a unique road game, where half the crowd is Michigan fans. You went in there down 17-0, they never let go of your team. Can you talk about that, how much impact that had on your team?

“Yeah, I think that was great to see, coming in and out of our tunnel, they were showing their support. And yeah, Go Blue, that’s what I say. It’ll be a happy flight home.”

Can you talk about Nick Eubanks’ contribution?

“Oh yeah. Didn’t I say him earlier? Nick Eubanks made the big play. That ball was in traffic, highly contested, Shea threw it on the back shoulder. Probably the only place it could’ve got completed. And Nick really showed great body control, and caught that ball. (Zach) Gentry as well. He made the big play for us, both those tight ends did a great job. And it was good. We adjusted. We were trying to hit that seam a few times a night and did. Quarterback was on the money.”

As you mentioned in that last quote there, Shea had to make a lot of tight throws late in the game. What can you say about his resilience late in the game?

“A-plus-plus.”

What was different offensively today, especially in the first half, than the last three weeks? It was a good performance, especially in the second half, but what was less explosive than the last couple weeks?

“I’m not really comparing them to the weeks before. No question, did a great job … we really called a great game all game long. And the players played really well. And just found a way to win.”

The hate is because of the results. We have been gotting boned hard by the officials since Harbaugh was hired and nothing has changed, so even if he is trying.. he is failing miserably. Also they way he scheduled ND on the road first when the last game when the series ended was on the road. He has done nothing about the B1G screweing us with the home and away rotation with MSU and OSU. He is a failure of an AD

Don't go so far as to say he's a failure as an AD.  The coaches and players, in all sports, seem to love him.  Donator's are donating well.  The AD seems to be run quite well, administratively.  New coaching hires are universally praised, and given resources and time to be successful.  He is not a failure as the AD.

That said, I don't like that football officiating appears (beyond any reasonable doubt) to be biased against Michigan - all the time.  At some point, the behind the scenes work doesn't work.  Maybe its time to try something different.  I'm not above some public shaming to start getting the word out, but I also think that a full-on broadside is out of the question.

Seriously - if Michigan started a full-on tirade about it, the entire nation would rise up with rolled eyes.  The same way they did about the medical facilities at Purdue last year.  But in the end, Purdue stepped up and fixed things; and the B1G actually put together a committee to standardize facility requirements.  Maybe the same can be done for officiating.  All we've heard, for years, is that the B1G is very happy with it's officiating.  And that needs to change.

I mean, how hard would it be to at a bare minimum install an ACC type ref team where you have a replay booth that can recall some of these plays and is more active in buzzing down.

Lets be honest, they aren't going to institute full time referees, but at least they could use a centralized committee, maybe even a B1G ref team on staff from 12pm eastern until what Midnight when all games are completed?

Give coaches 3 challenges per game (if wrong you lose a time-out, if not wrong, you keep your challenge and time out). Use your silly commercial breaks there, and allow the centralized/playbooth to buzz down and hold a play after a flag or for something they saw the crew didn't. I'll even let you throw another commercial break in there. See, Delany, everyone wins.

Valid points about the coaching hires, especially Hockey. I also agree that public outrage will not work or be a good look. The only way to get that change is to use our weight as a university to force the B1G offices to do something. If that means to leak to them that we are preparing to look elsewhere when the tv contract is up or some other means, what he has done so far has not worked in the slightest. I don't know what real options are available, but i'm not an AD. There has to be some recourse, the rest of the league in general has no interest in helping us with the problem because it's not in their best interest to see us come up. We have to force the issue, if that means peoples feelings get hurt oh well.

Agreed on the public shaming.  O'Neill and his merry band of dipshits should not be allowed anywhere near a Michigan game.  That moron last night should be added to the list.  The Webber Ass Slappers Crew should never be on an OSU game.

It's disgraceful every year.  I wish everything was fair and we were just being whiny crybabies about this because the calls would eventually even out.  But the referee bias is definitely a thing and without a public display of the evidence and embarrassing some folks, nothing will change.

I'm not familiar enough with the referee arrangements in college football but perhaps a competent reporter could do some digging around / pull together an investigative piece.

Why are refs beyond reproach? Any potentially nefarious forces (read: money) in play...? Seems to be a recurring or worsening problem over the years.

I agree that it needs to be a media-driven thing. Complaining about officials always carries a whining taint when it comes from the team or fans.

I agree with something Sam Webb has called for - making officials available to the media post game. "That holding call against the Michigan running back -- what did you see there?" "On that targeting call -- is it the rule that you call targeting even if the offensive player shoves the defensive player into the quarterback?"

Nothing like the prospect of having to explain yourself publicly to help you improve.

I don't know what Warde does or doesn't do.  If he does anything, he does it quietly.  If he has done anything, it has not worked, as we continue to be on the wrong side of some "eye brow raising" calls.  2015 MSU was bad, but after the bone job in Columbus, Warde should have been on the doorstep of the B1G office Monday morning at 8:00 am ready to vehemently defend his football team.  And he would have been justified to do so.  Nothing has really changed since.  If we didn't pull that game out yesterday, that phantom hold would be a huge story today.

Great gutsy win.

Play calling.....  Yes they won the but when you run Higdon 7 STRAIGHT times up the middle in the 4th quarter on 1st down and each run only gains 1 yard (yes 7 carries for 7 yards).  You are only making life more difficult for yourself.

And Klatt even pointed out that is because the SS McGee was repeatedly flying up to the line of scrimmage.  Just 1 PA and Gentry is running scot free in the seam.  And if you don't want to throw it, the any other run, show some creativity....... there has to be a better plan than  7 carries for 7 yards on runs.......

+ 10,000.

This is why we'll end up an 8-4 team with no wins against a team with a winning record...AGAIN. Because, despite our high level of talent at the skilled positions and a very good defense, our play calling is so old school conservative that we only break from the script out of desperation, like when we FINALLY showed a radically different look on Higdon's winning TD late in the 4Q.

Against good teams with relatively equal talent and coaching, play calling and play design is the chess match that solves the opponent's defense. Yet on first down,  we're content to play checkers.

I think people around here would have been happier had Michigan actually keeled over and lost.

Weird stuff happens on the road. I'm sure Ohio State was stunned going into halftime down 31-17 to Iowa last year -  they gave up 55 points and lost.

Michigan fans aren't happy unless they're unhappy.  Yeah, we didn't look great for a quarter and a half.  But we won.  Even the elite teams have close games against teams they should beat - see Clemson yesterday (at home, even).

There are issues to work out, but the team does look like its improving as the year goes on (anyone notice that pass protection was actually decent the last few games?)  We still have our own destiny in our hands and I like our chances against everyone remaining except probably OSU.  Get to that game with the division still up for grabs, and who knows what could happen.

Yeah, and I recall that many had this as a trap game when discussing the schedule last summer.  Given Pat Fitzgerald, a full slate of seniors, and two weeks to prepare no one should be surprised that NW came out fast.  I think many of us (me too) looked at all their injuries and wrote them off.

Should have read further before I posted. I think making them available to the media could very well be the most effective thing you could do. Officials are almost anonymous to most fans. If there's press conferences, there will be audio and video of you. You're not 'the officiating sucked' you're 'Teddy Valentine, you sucked tonight. Explain to us why.'

I think you’d need to make it a full time job if you’re going to do that. All Big Ten refs have other jobs and lives outside of football — none of them are getting rich doing this — becoming a public figure isn’t supposed to be part of the job description. Still, some kind of explanation that is not behind closed doors would be a good idea.

The biggest come-from-behind win in the Harbaugh era — good stuff!

NW is a tough one to beat under Fitz.  He’s really good at preparing his squad for Michigan, had a bye week and added emotional ammunition.  Coach said it, they were prepared, but ... not for the adjustments Michigan made.  Hats off to both coach staffs and players.  At the end of it all, Michigan was the better prepared team — although it didn’t look like it at first.

I have a hard time believing that all these horrible calls are random.  Over and over we see egregious holds not called, and now, the most egregious call I’ve ever seen on Higdon.  It looks to me, to be honest, that Harbaugh has grown to accept them as a matter of course — and if he has, I hope he tells his players to expect them.  We’ve talked for years about why other teams don’t get holds called against them despite a near relentless rush and guys being tackled.  I don’t get it.  Then, as if a giant FUCK YOU, we get a phantom hold called on us negating the best designed QB run we’ve seen since Denard.

It’s a travesty, but everyone involved has such a high degree of plausible deniability that even bringing it up looks like paranoia.  But c’mon.  Since Harbaugh has been coach we’ve seen other teams penalties drop and ours skyrocket, and that doesn’t even begin to spot, etc.  I know people insist it’s not intentional, but I find that becoming a more and more absurd position to defend.

I’m even more proud of the guys for overcoming and officiating crew intent upon keeping it close.

Great win, and great for the character of the team!

To Brian - hope you can review two specific plays:

1. On the near INT in the end zone, Perry was chewing out Nico after the play. I believed that was meant for him

2. Fade to the corner to Perry - why do this while DPJ would’ve caught that.

Correct me if I'm wrong....but was the Higdon call not a blatant makeup call for the Hawkins holding penalty on third down that we got away with????  That was very clear cut and we got away with it.  Every other PI call against Mich was warranted.....Long/Vert need to step up their game going forward if we want to even have a chance to roll the table in the Big Ten.  From the start of camp, all I've read about is how solid our secondary is and outside of Brandon Watson it's been pretty average.  I'm betting both Long and Hill are back next year which is clearly a positive for next year's team but concerning for Wisco/PSU/MSU/OSU this year.

The Higdon call was BS but don't forget about the Hawkins no-call.

Sten Carlson

September 30th, 2018 at 10:35 PM ^

What does the Higdon call have to do with the Hawkins no-call?

When any league or conference official is asked about “make-up calls” they vehemently claim that no such calls exist.  Besides, Hawkins was jamming the WR inside the 5 yard window where he’s able to do so.  It was a close play, to be sure, but it was a judgment no-call.  Higdon, by contrast, was decidedly NOT a judgement call that “coulda gone either way ...” it was a phantom

Obviously the Higdon holding call was bullshit and no one will argue otherwise, but our secondary has been very grabby this season.  It's like they lost all confidence after the ND game and are trying tom overcompensate.  Not as as bad as MSU from a few years ago, but that's what I see.

Yes I know it happens on both side, but let's not start the "UM got screwed by the refs" card.  Everyone likes to point to the bad spot at OSU 2016, but everyone conveniently forgets the previous down where it was 3rd and 9 and we had Barrett in the backfield and couldn't get him.

If we play "undisciplined" in the sense we keep getting 5-8 penalties per game, and give the opposition the first quarter for free against better competition, then I fail to see more than 8 wins this year.
