When did UMBIG11 become Shawn L Martin?

Submitted by Dillon on

UMBIG11 used to be calm and insightful, now anything he has posted since the season began has been nothing but negative or expressing pessimism on the outlook of the season.

Can we all just leave the hot takes at the door. Teams evolve throughout the season, see PSU in 2016.

Just relax.

Hard to put a finger on the defensive issues other than teams have had an entire off-season to game plan for press man coverage and our blitz packages.  Like the offense, this "pre-season" defense could all be dumbed-down a bit before conference play in order not to show on film the good stuff new for 2018.  We will see on Saturday as the gloves will be off for Nebraska.

Question for those who played at the college level and above: how does the qb revolving door affect the psychology of the team? I suspect it would be better to have one guy stick with the team for at least three years to create stronger relationships as opposed to putting in older transfers for a season. This isn't a knock on Shea Patterson at all; it's more of a question about Harbaugh's strategy and how it affects the team.

We all love this team, that's what makes Michigan unique. Sadly I live amongst the savages in Columbus. My expectations are sky high every year just to be knocked down. I have been where UMBig11 is many times in the last few years. Having said that and knowing him all my life, his frustration fades and optimism usually returns. Yes we have issues, I would hate to see Shea being here wasted by an O line that is inexperienced and flawed. If you don't agree that's fine, but everyone has an opinion and in my experience insight from UMBig11 is usually unbiased and most importantly accurate.

So you created a thread to call out our best poster and basically say unless you have only positive opinions than you shouldn't post anything?

I hope you retire from starting topics on here. This is trash.

Although I have a suspicion about who umbig11 really is, we never might know his true identity.*  Nevertheless, his deep-insider comments here since he became an MGoBlogger on July 21, 2010 have established his credibility.

One person’s pessimism is another person’s realism.  Questioning the TONE of umbig11's comments since the season began may be fair, but I don’t think that you can reasonably discount his perspective.  He seems to be close enough to the team to have witnessed practice sessions, interview sessions and maybe even coaching-staff and team meetings to know more about the Michigan football team than anyone who posts here.

Remember the poster who touted Karan Higdon?  I’ve forgotten his name and never knew whether he’d been Karan Higdon’s high school coach or just a close friend of the Higdon family. He was intimately familiar with Karan’s background and skills.  Turns out that he was right about what Michigan could expect to receive from a relatively unheralded recruit whose commitment didn't receive overwhelming praise, but who’s now one of the captains of the football team.

Count me among those who trust umbig11's perspective about this Michigan football team AND among those who'd love to see his 8-4 prediction turn out to be too pessimistic by at least two more wins.  Go Blue!

MgoBoard Logic:

UMBIG11 > positive > More UMBIG11

UMBIG11 > negative > must have been jilted by the coaching staff.

Brian and Seth haven't exactly been overly optimistic based on the first 3 games... did the staff tell them off too?

seems like people can't post their opinion (not hot takes, but actual opinions) without a certain group of people getting upset about it.

Funny thing is, Harbaugh would probably be the first to admit that they need to do better and that he and the coaches need to do better.

So, I can’t have an opinion? I am definitely further away from 11-1 and closer to 8-4. Harbaugh is calling the shots. Is he free from criticism? I will stand by my comments. Expectations are much higher this year. Let’s see how this plays out. Oh, and OP, get a life. It’s a message board that we share!

I don't need to say this but ...

You aren't (weren't?) just a random poster but a highly respected member of the community.  I may not post much but I read almost everyday.

Maybe you had a "bad moment" that we all have from time to time.

It would be great to see you back to being at least slightly optimistic.  I guess we will see how that plays out as well.

For the record I am convinced that JH is the second best coach in all of football, better even than Saban, second only to Belichick  The problem is that there is SO much cheating going in college football.  So much winning at all costs, that I am no longer convinced that JH can overcome it.  I am not saying UM is perfect but I know for sure UM is one of the 10 least dirty programs in college football.  So our disadvantages are huge.  It may be best for JH to go to the NFL, which has a much more level playing filed, and win a couple of Super Bowls.

This is the reality we UM fans may have to accept.  The dirty filthy motherf**king pieces of shit may have won in college football.  And we wont win unless we become one of them.  Those are the people you should be mad at, not JH.

Yes, obviously.

MGoBlog logic is simple: Everything not good for UM is someone else's responsibility/fault; everything good for UM is b/c the team and coaches are superior.

Also, if you post anything with a whiff of "not good for UM" you're a troll, OSU or MSU fan, have multiple accounts, etc.

And if you post anything with a whiff of "good for UM," you're a "respected member of the community" (quoting another dopey reply above) who has stayed and will be a champion.

You're absolutely permitted an opinion. And the OP is--uhm--misguided in my view.

I think the issue is that people assume that insider knowledge about the program automatically equals heightened knowledge about football in general. You've proven your knowledge about the program. While I haven't read every message you've posted, I'm not aware of you sharing your background sufficiently that we can automatically assume that your thoughts on the play of the team as a whole are more valid than, for example, my craptastic opinions. This might be mitigated if you were giving long analyses of why, for example, you think the offense is too vanilla (Xs and Os plus weighing possibilities like JH is waiting for the meat of the schedule before breaking things out). Of course, you're free to post your conclusions without adding your reasoning, just like everyone else. But given your reputation here, people want to give your opinions heightened value. Not sure it's completely fair to you or us, but it's an outcome of perhaps holding you in too great of esteem not knowing your full background.

If the offense makes strides this season, even 8-4 will not be a disaster. I think I predicted 9-3 but our D may be bit softer than I had first thought. I think we have a chance to beat MSU in E. Lansing and WI at home. I think PSU and OSU will have too much firepower for us to match. I'm sure like every season, there will be a team we should beat that may trip us up.  Most of us enjoy your posts umbig11. Please keep us informed!

That is not the experience I’ve seen here over the years. I see a bunch of immediate overreactions to every little detail. People want to espouse their opinions on whether or not milk and steak make a football player. I’ve never seen a rose-colored MGoBlog and probably because we’ve not gone for Roses in a long time. SVP said it on Sportsce yet this morning—fans and sports journalist have too much info and expect too much too quickly, demanding coaches like Herman and Taggert be fired after one game. Fans are ducking ridiculously negative, from what I’ve seen.

Optimism is an easy target for a bunch of people who see things through tweets and cannot handle or envision long-term progress, as a result.

UMbig11 is my homeboy. (Not in real life; he’s probably filing a restraining order right now)

The offensive gameplan for ND was boring. At no point did anyone in my section think we were really going to win. And I was in the Mich section. Criticism warranted.

i support Harbaugh even if he gets an 8-5 record this year. However, I can also criticize him and say we should expect more for his salary. When you’re paid at the top tier, you need to exceed expectations every once in a while.

I (Old Guy here) have loved M FB since 1970, living and dying (emotionally) with the team.  Yet I used to scream at the TV when Bo coached in the Rose Bowl - I hated how poorly prepared we looked and how ineffective the game plans were.

However, he was in my mind the best coach for Michigan and I never wanted him replaced.

You can get frustrated with the coach - it's part of being a fanatic.

You don't want to pay to get insider information behind a paywall, but look for it on a free board, you get a guy telling you Brandon Peters is ahead of Dylan McCaffrey. You get what you pay for.
