Board Recommendation of Suspension Likely Coming for Meyer - report from Columbus Dispatch

Submitted by Indy Pete - Go Blue on

Siegel and Sullivan provided the latest update, and I found this excerpt to be quite compelling:

"Two sources connected to the investigation said the likely recommendation to university President Michael V. Drake is a suspension for Meyer. Drake and the board could also opt for a “time served” punishment since Meyer has been removed from football activities for more than two weeks."

I personally consider it unsurprising that the board is reportedly recommending a slap on the wrist.  Perhaps the president will take matters into his own hands.  Time will tell...

I agree, I have to believe McMurphy has one more card up his sleeve.  I have a hard time believing that he would play all of his cards until he saw where everything ended up. I'm not in journalism, but would have to believe there would be nothing sweeter than dropping a bigger bombshell once OSU has done their investigation and cleared Urbz of everything or gave him a slap on the wrist.

We should all take into consideration, the "Columbus" dispatch.  Might as well be the "Powell" police report that isn't available to anyone.  I take anything within about 100 miles of radius of Columbus to err on the side of OSU as they pretty much all drink the scarlett and gray kool aid and will do anything to put a positive spin on the situation.

If McMurphy drops a bombshell after OSU Board of Trustees announces a suspension, I think I am going to need someone to edit that 2010 Alaska Nanooks hockey intro video with Brett McMurphy dropping a bomb on OSU instead of the HockeyBear. Maybe even edit Paula Lavigne as his wingman dropping a bomb on MSU. Greatest stadium intro video ever.

Since it looks like the results of the investigation will be given verbally behind closed doors, I'm wondering if anyone on each side of the argument will be left satisfied.....

Meyer isn't going anywhere.  I don't know why so many people on here think he's gonna be removed.  Look at the extremes it took to have Universities finally take action at Louisville, Baylor, PSU and Ole miss.  Even tho I dislike Urban and his sanctimonious facade, I truly don't think the OSU BoT/President believes he did anything egregious enough to warrant removal.  Which is a whole new realm of pathetic.

I didn’t think they would fire him, but I’m interested in the reasoning for the suspension. What are they suspending him for? If he reported it up and followed protocol, why is he suspended?  If he didn’t and they are only suspending him??? Holy shit.

Seriously

My prediction:

Finding 1: He reported everything properly, but he and AD Gene Smith exercised poor professional judgment by keeping Smith on staff.

Finding 2: Urban lied during Big 10 press conference when he denied knowledge of the 2015 events, causing BoT and President to waste time/$ on an avoidable circus.

Punishment: 3 game suspension.

This seems pretty cut in dry, IMO.  Three scenarios:

1. Meyer knew of the abuse and didn't report it....Fired

2. Meyer knew of the abuse and reported the incident, but failed to fire Smith because the University didn't care.....No suspension

3. Meyer didn't know what was going but failed to properly monitor program......Suspension.

Am I missing anything else?

Suspending Meyer a few games before the Big Ten season is about as punitive on him as suspending a pitcher for the next three games that he wasn't even slated to pitch in - it's nothing at all.  A suspension that would really curb behavior would include games against key rivals so his career stats could actually potentially take a hit, but they won't let that happen.  Winning and football are too important.  Man, our conference division, between Ped State, Nassar State, THE Wife Abuse State University and freaking Maryland -  home of death by bully - really is a shit show.  The world should really be behind the good guys (and it isn't going to be Indiana or Rutgers) to step up and kick some ass this year.  Go Blue.

Board doesn’t meet until Wednesday. Hopefully McMurphy has one round left in the chamber.

This may be true, but keep in mind these are OSU reporters using unnamed sources. That's not a slam dunk in terms of reliability.

Yes, But Drake is politically maneuvered into a corner now

Meyer will get the suspension, and it will be reported that he reported the incident internally, but didn't fire the guy when nothing was done, then lied to the press about it.

Now, what happens to Gene Smith will be interesting to see.

I dunno man. I still say it’s all or nothing for Meyer. Either he covered for a guy who beat his wife repeatedly or he didn’t. Not sure how the BoT could only suspend him if that’s found to be true.

Even if Meyer did report the domestic abuse complaint in 2015 (though it sounds like the AD knew about it before he did), it still doesn't justify him keeping Smith on his staff – especially after it being the second such complaint.

If OSE chooses to suspend, the PR hit is going to be ginormous. They have to know it's coming and it might be worth just buying him out. It really is a no win situation for them.

If they give Urbz a slap on the wrist, the press are going to tear that university apart. Some of the chants that are going to be said this year is going to be disgraceful for those players. I cant believe Urban hasn't just stepped down. Such an idiot. That's going to suck for them which is fine for me but I'd hate to have to hear that all season long in away stadiums when I'm trying to play for my university. It's pretty fricking black and white here. I don't know how you keep him and give him a light suspension. I'd say minimum for the season to set an example and show some integrity Buckeyes. Damn losers.

Depends on what his boss, legal and Hr said at the time.

I realize he should have taken moral leadership and fired Smith anyway in that instance, and therefore should be responsible, but we don't know the details. And this is what the Buckeye base should also realize, instead of he reported so he's innocent.

Yesterday he's done. Today he stays. Anybody want to take a guess on what tomorrow's insider leak will be?

This investigation has been tight-lipped from the get-go I doubt anything has changed. All these inside leaks are people throw shit against the wall and hoping it'll stick. We'll all know soon enough the punishment, or lack thereof, and what the committee found.

I don't see any sane way to justify keeping Urban unless the board finds that he did his job reporting Smith, and beyond that, tried to fire him and got overruled by above. If that's the case, then heads have got to role in the Athletic Department.

If they don't do all that, this is some screwy bullshit.

That's a big bag of karma that OSU is going to carry as long as Meyer around. I think they may regret this in the end

He’ll get a suspension through at least the TCU game just so they can save face a little bit. TCU is extremely overrated and even if they lose, all they have to do is win the B1G and odds are they’ll still make the playoff.

Short of firing, there is nothing Ohio State can do in this situation that makes sense on any level. And if that doesn't occur, then let the wrath of the football world rain down on Columbus. Yeah, that means nothing, because Ohio, the most worthless state of these United States.

And I say being the progeny of beautiful Ohio woman, with many relatives there and having gone to school there.

Once again I was starting a fact, Ohio must not be that worthless, you got Howard and Woodson from the great state of Ohio to go up North.  You take Charles off that great team your not co national champs with Nebraska.  By the way your tears tastes excellent too, especially after your 2 - 15 record against Ohio St. the last 17 years.
