Long time lurker here, who logged in to point out Maizinator's post at 10:50 on 19Jan.  I've pounded sand overseas and seen some wild stuff, but this post is uniquely heinous.  He may be stuck in a city and not know how intelligent and emotional horses are, but I can't unsee that crap.  Maybe mods can save others from the same fate?

I have the same problem with yttv and it's over a GB wired connection.

1080p resolution doesn't have that problem, just 4k.

Until Chambers stops trying…

Until Chambers stops trying to run around blockers, and actually uses heavy hands, he'll be a liability.

I think they'll use Styles to help cover in those situations, but I'm surprised OSU has done this poorly with LB recruiting/development.  Historically it has been a strength.

I almost forgot to recommend this resource I give new hires, for consideration when developing web apps:

Ideally, you would initially be helping to maintain infrastructure that is already in place, which means you wouldn't need to build the sandbox, only play in it.

Good luck.  Assuming this is fun for you, I have no doubt you'll do great.

I'm a CTO/architect at a DC…

I'm a CTO/architect at a DC-based IT firm.  It's very tough to find American citizens with excellent communication skills.  Most of the SDLC has to do with requirements and testing from a man-hours perspective.  I have tried to hire locally on and off over the last decade with poor results.  Once you get some technical proficiency, I am absolutely certain you'll find a place, in any location.  Every business is an IT shop now, whether they want to be or not.

The bigger question is whether it's fun for you.  Sometimes when deploying code I feel like a running back with an open lane, a guaranteed TD-only to get tripped up by a blade of grass.  Your customers won't thank you when your stuff works, and each SCRUM sprint can feel like impending doom.  Your only saving grace will be if you truly love building something.

For advice on what to learn, check out the stack overflow dev survey:

https://survey.stackoverflow.co/2023/

Healthcare and Gov industries are mostly JAVA and dotnet stacks from what I've seen, and those industries aren't going away anytime soon.

If you can't get an internship lined up, then certifications are your next best bet.

Figure out if you like SDLC first.  If you like it, nothing will stop you.

One word: Rozilla!

One word: Rozilla!

My wife has a slowly…

My wife has a slowly progressing genetic disorder that originally presented as orthopedic pain, and given her ballet background that's what doctors originally thought.  Eventually, every doctor we saw accused her of seeking pain meds and doctor shopping.  After numerous months of appointments and medical bills I eventually started wondering if the accusations were true.  Entertaining that notion about my perfect wife has brought me so much shame; to the point where every time I think about how I allowed the thought to enter my mind I cry like a baby.  Once the diagnosis was achieved, she actually thanked me for supporting her, and I threw up in my mouth.  She had no idea how selfish my thoughts were starting to become.

We never got to have kids, and I couldn't buy a home for a long time due to the bills, even though I'm accomplished in my field.  I had to customize the home for eventual wheelchair access.  She has about a decade left.  When I don't see her face I'm tempted with resentment for all the household chores I have to do by myself, but when I see her face I know I would run into gunfire for her.  If somehow the Lord gave me a chance to do it all over, I'm not sure I would change much.

Even though slow death of a loved one is a bitch, I've come to realize we're all slowly dying, and life is only what you make it.  She can still walk with me while I walk the dogs, and the other day with fresh snow we walked through some oriental gardens near where I live.

I used to get so frustrated when I saw people whine and complain about their lives, when what they complain about is so petty.  But now, I'm starting to get more bulletproof emotionally.

Last week I found out a buddy of mine from the service gave up.  A kid overseas picked up a rifle, and he would have ignored the issue (maybe even let the kid shoot him) if his unit wasn't with him, but he had to put the kid down, and he never figured out how to live with it.

It can ALWAYS get worse, that's for sure.

Hatter,

Hatter,

I work in IT and there's an analogy I'd like to throw your way:

Say you were on a farm and your apple cart started to break down.  You could keep fixing the apple cart, but eventually it will break so badly that you cannot fix it.  So, you know that you proactively need to figure out how to dump your apples from one apple cart to another, more modern apple cart.

You could try moving the apples in a couple different ways.

  1. One, you could just dump the apples recklessly, and tell people to screw themselves if they complain.  Because you don't appear to care about your produce everyone stops consuming your apples, and nobody lets you work with apple carts again.
  2. Two, you could practice dumping a small number of apples in the hopes of establishing an estimated "best way" to make the transfer.  It's best to do this when most people aren't using the apple carts.
  3. Three, you could become so focused on not dropping a single apple during the transfer, that you never actually transfer the apples because you are afraid.  There's no way you are willing to guess which apples are most important.  The apple cart eventually breaks, and you lose all your apples.  As a consequence nobody lets you work with apple carts again.
  4. Four, you could become so discouraged by the other options and how no matter what people will complain.  In a fit of rage and despair you shove an apple up your butt, start drinking, rub apple butter all over your nipples, and adopt 22 cats in hopes that they start licking (otherwise known as engineer burnout)

In my shop I TRY to roll with option #2 and ignore the unfair complaints.  I don't have any cats yet, but there is a can of apple butter in the pantry.

Trustee decisions usually…

Trustee decisions usually happen behind the scenes before they officially meet.  This is supposed to make the decision seem like it was obvious, and therefore garner satisfaction among the populace.  Unless the public written investigation report is blatant and thorough, I'm wondering if there will be any satisfaction to be had.

Since it looks like the…

Since it looks like the results of the investigation will be given verbally behind closed doors, I'm wondering if anyone on each side of the argument will be left satisfied.....

Where did they say they…

Where did they say they would verbally release their findings today?

Part of me wonders if all…

Part of me wonders if all this build-up is going to leave everyone disappointed on both sides of the argument i.e. a 2 game suspension with absolutely no public discussion about the investigation's findings.

Not sure how you can crescendo past sex toys and dick pics, but if there's anyone who can do it, it's Zach!

This is doable.

Wisconsin…

This is doable.

Wisconsin just lost a receiver, and the passing game is the only reason they aren't top 5 material.

Oklahoma's quarterback is unproven.

Win over ND and then UM is ranked around 8-10, which means if there's a loss halfway through the season in the UW/MSU/PSU stretch then UM still stays in the top 10, and in the mix for playoff with OSU looming.

This!  That way they still…

This!  That way they still have the power over the situation that so many in hospice crave, but you're supporting them as well.

Another thing that hasn't gotten mentioned much:  once hospice starts, you're often dealing with smaller windows of consciousness, so you're gonna need to get in and get out in short periods of time.  There might not be much time for a conversation, so you might consider tempering your expectations.

In my experience, going there and telling the closest family member that you're here to support him but don't have to see him if he doesn't want works pretty good.

Just finished doing a ton of…

Just finished doing a ton of research myself.

My oled is the best picture I have ever seen, but you can cut the price in half if you opt for full array local dimming instead.  Led and qled are not the same as oled.

Aside from lighting, the next most important thing is refresh rate (to avoid flicker when watching sports).  Most televisions advertise refresh rates that aren't their real refresh rate.  For instance, when Vizio promotes a "true motion" refresh rate of 120hz, they really mean 60hz smoothed by staggered dimming.  You will want a tv that has legit 120hz refresh if possible.

Third most important attribute is the sound bar.  All of them have simulated surround sound, but not all have built-in subwoofers.  You'll want dual built-in subwoofers.

The least most important attribute is 4k, because most tv signals aren't even truly 1080p, they are usually 720p at 120hz or 1080i at 60hz.

No matter which tv you get, make sure you run your signal via HDMI and run the tv optical audio output into the soundbar.  If your tv only has 60hz refresh rate, you can get an upconverter for cheap that will smooth the pixels to a 4k resolution, but they usually only output 60hz, and if you have legit 120hz refresh rate you won't want to give that up.

Finally, the best thing you can do for your tv is to adjust the picture after you pull it out of the box.  There are lots of tutorials online that describe how to do this.

If you have price protection with your credit card, I would recommend buying from your local best buy, and getting reimbursed by filing a claim with your card that references the tv online for a lower price.  Just make sure your card recognizes the online price source as a reputable vendor.  This approach will save you hundreds, get your tv in the house with no delay, and allow for local returns if pixels are dead.

Happy hunting!  Watching college football with a crystal clear picture and sound is a great joy.

I'll second this.  Very good.

MH,

I'm curious:  does your rhetorical wtf suggest I was nonsensical, or are you just surprised by my post?

I know you only asked for…

I know you only asked for one, but I have 4 that I swear by:

-I love my cheap handheld bidet wand.  First time I used one was overseas, and it was an epiphany.  It gets you cleaner, cleans washable diapers, saves on paper, cheaper and better for the environment, and makes cleaning the bathroom faster by making it easy to rinse off the scrubbing bubbles.  Just make sure you keep lysol wipes nearby (you'll want the nozzle clean before rinsing the scrubbing bubbles).

-If you struggle with portion control, or don't like cooking, healthy choice cafe steamers (280 calories and delicious) are a revelation.

-Dark liquor started waking most of my friends up at 3AM in our mid-thirties.  For most people I talk to, it's easier to sleep through the night if you drink hard cider and clear liquor.  If you really want dark liquor or beer, you might try to drink it earlier in the day (lunch or happy hour).

-If you mix clear liquor with orange juice (with pulp) on game-day, there's a good chance you won't get a cold the next morning.

yeah I wish it separated the games like other DVRs.....finding the game after the fact can be a challenge.

However, within the next 24 hours you can always find it on youtube for free......

The Amazon Fire Tv supports…

The Amazon Fire Tv supports psvue.  You don't need a PS4.  I wouldn't use the fire stick though, because the experience isn't as clean.  You can also watch psvue through your web browser or device with exactly the same user experience as the PS4 or fire tv.

I have psvue and the price is great, I can cancel it at any time without contract, and I was able to cut my monthly bill in half.  It has big ten network and unlimited cloud DVR that is accessible on any device.

Only cons are:  Depending on where you live you might not get the local news, DVR'ed shows have an expiration, and 720p resolution (all cloud streaming services say they have 1080P, but they usually are only 720P).

I'm never going back, ever.

It's possible that his…

It's possible that his comments at big ten media days would be framed at least in part by legal counsel.

I'm more surprised that they would think he could get away with those comments, knowing there are texts out there.  Maybe they didnt think she would break the circle of trust?

The text screenshots were the most damning for me.  I really should be able to believe the interview outright, but those screenshots really drove the point home.

I watch all Urban's media interviews, and he almost treated Earl Bruce like a God.  Most bucknuts wanted Zach canned for the receiver performance, and all other OSU coaches are amazing, so it's been well known that he got preferential treatment.

It's hard to see how there won't be consequences, but then again MSU.....

I rarely post.  I mostly…

I rarely post.  I mostly just read in an effort to stay up on a2.  It's just that the victim's story strikes a chord for reasons I'd prefer not to get into.

Although I "pulled a Dackich" with school, the phrase "Michigan Man" still means a lot to me.  I never had any examples of morality until I stepped on campus, and Michigan men saved my life.

Thankfully, if you read the timestamps earlier in this board, well before you jumped on, Larry and triple A already helped sway me on this issue.

And guess what?  They did it while still managing to be respectful.

You're right.  That's…

You're right.  That's totally unhealthy behavior.

I will add that football players are inherent psychological triggers that are meant to be freely consumed by the public (most often in a good way).  This means that some of what you just described can be difficult to avoid.

The threats were reported by two other football players to the Office of Student Affairs who reported them to the University police.

I feel like if there weren't…

I feel like if there weren't broken bones, nobody gets stabbed, and everyone left breathing, there should have been nothing made of it.  My friends and I used to get into bar fights all the time, often fighting each other.

You're right of course. …

You're right of course.  Kudos.  There seems to be a portion of society that treats athletic achievement as an allegory for overall greatness, instead of a nuanced display.

I wonder what drives that allegory.  It seems like symbolism that is instilled at a young age, and needs to be unlearned over the years.

This might be a bad example because TL never did anything this bad, but I remember scratching my head at how people thought OJ was innocent because of his athletic achievements.  How we look at things is fascinating....

Triple-A,

As a general rule…

Triple-A,

As a general rule, across the entire internet, your comment is probably true.

Personally, I'm C level at my IT firm and I'm a survivor of assault myself.

But, you're right, I AM a bit jealous.  I got in a bar fight in college that took me years and tens of thousands of dollars to expunge, so anytime I see someone get a pass, especially when a woman is involved, it grinds my gears.

However, Larry Appleton just convinced me to let this situation go by reminding me of who it's like to be young and have a close friend.  In that context it's a bit easier to let this stuff go, and I'm happy about that because it's more fun to root for someone.

That doesn't mean I would ever be surprised by someone else having a hard time letting this go.

I think we can root for someone and rejoice in their success, while at the same time not wanting to deal with all the triggers.

It is very silly, the practice of wanting to extend justice over a message board.

lol!  you could go outside. …

lol!  you could go outside.  Last chance before football starts....

You make a great point.

You…

You make a great point.

You might be the first person who had changed someone's mind on the internet.  Congratulations.

I'm a bit relieved to be honest.  It's much more enjoyable to root for someone than against.

I suppose if you want to…

I suppose if you want to argue that the act of threatening to rape someone should be forgotten at some point, especially if the threat was from when the perpetrator was young, you might be able to sway me a bit.

But don't act like this wasn't a legit accusation.  Multiple teammates reported him, and the victim found out about his threats.

9 years is a long time, but lots of people have daughters, or have been sexually assaulted, so this could be hard to let go for them.  So I wasn't surprised when multiple people on the board brought this issue up.

He's a heck of a player, and truly, I'm glad he got paid.  Maybe he could donate some tax deductible monies to help victims of sexual assault.....

Also, the report says the…

Also, the report says the rape victim found out about Lewan's threats at a grad school concert, so the teammates that reported him to the police weren't the only people who knew about it.  Everyone knew.

Not sure if you have a daughter, but I don't know what I would do as a father in that situation.

Even if you think Gibbon's was completely 100% innocent (I don't know anyone who does), threatening to rape someone is never ok.

you have to admit though, if…

you have to admit though, if more than one of your teammates reported you to the police, there's got to be part of you that's a bit unhinged.

I don't know there was a …

I don't know there was a "coverup" per se, but I do know that TL absolutely threatened the woman.  Here's the University of Michigan's police report responding to the allegations from the teammates, wherein the victim and Lewan are interviewed.

http://www.washtenawwatchdogs.com/um-police-report.html

That doesn't mean we can't be happy for him.  I'm happy for anyone who gets paid.  If I saw him in a bar I might even buy him a beer, and would definitely congratulate him on a day like this.

But if you say there isn't any fire with this guy, don't be surprised if some people reply with "yeah, but there's a lot of smoke."

it's also in the police…

it's also in the police report:

"then I'm going to rape her because, [Gibbons] didn't."

IT WASN'T HERESAY.  Multiple people on his own team reporting his threats to rape the rape victim.  This was reported from MULTIPLE news outlets.  Here's an example:

Mgo rides Zach Smith hard (justifiably), but gives TL a pass......?

Warriner

I'm a buckeye and this scares me a bit....

Ed Warriner is an ok recruiter, and horrible at play calling.  However, he's the best damn o-line coach there is.  Just look at how poor OSU was playing up until 2012 on the line, and the number of guys from 2012 to 2014 that are in the NFL.

Unfortunately, he tried his hand at playcalling and that got him the boot, but he is adored in cbus for what he did from 2012-2014.  Great great coach.

Glad It Happened

Registered just so I could tell you guys congrats.  As a buckeye I've been wanting the game to have more implications (i.e. 2006).  This is good for college football.  Looking forward to 28Nov.  God bless.
