Brandon Peters POSBANG

Submitted by Hold This L on

With only 18 days until kickoff, and with the BTN bus stopping by practice yesterday, I wanted to start a positive BP thread.

I have always felt that Peters had a legitimate shot at starting since Shea transferred. He knows the offense, even if Jim is changing is up a bit, he has developed relationships with his teammates over two offseasons, he was able to play mistake-free/conservative in the regular season, and he wasn’t shy to competition.

From the way it sounds, Shea hasn’t shown he’s the clear cut option over Brandon. He brings that improvisational skill, ability to extend plays or create. Brandon is the more talented passer, IMO, and has the prototype build with above average athleticism for the position. He was thrown into the fire last year and did the best he could with what he was dealing with. The bowl game, well, the fumble in the red zone and complete brain farts on D probably, in his mind, forced him to take chances. They didn’t pan out.

A huge part of Brandon is confidence. There are some guys like Shea who have a cockiness to them, and that’s not a bad thing at all. They won’t get fazed by anything and they believe in their abilities. Guys like Brandon need coaches who trust them and don’t micro manage. I believe if he’s truly given a chance and he proves out of camp that he’s the best QB on the team, he can lead us to a national championship.

It actually sets up well for him to back up Shea.  See what the leadership he has evidently been lacking looks like and take over for his last two years of eligibility.  Then we would be on track with guys filling in behind, getting the chance to start in year 3,4,5 or whatever the case may be.

"From the way it sounds, Shea hasn’t shown he’s the clear cut option over Brandon."

Actually it does sound like that, according to insiders. And Harbaugh said the starter will be determined "sooner rather than later," which seems to suggest more separation than previous years.

This is amazingly false.

People were incredibly high on Peters until the South Carolina game. That was his game to solidify his position as front runner and he blew it.

Believe me, I'm someone who thought we didn't even need Patterson up until that performance.

Did anyone else see James Yoder talk shit to Jared Wangler on twitter? Dude is a total fucking loser

Fuck Yoder. And he just called out Sam Webb for "stealing" what he's been "saying for weeks" and posted Sam Webb's VIP article and his own article claiming that Sam stole his intel, even though the takes were pretty different. Yoder lives in Dallas and Sam is in Ann Arbor... I just can't stand him

While I firmly believe the fanbase was quick to turn on Brandon Peters despite him being a redshirt freshman (i.e. 2nd year player), I think the OP will be "holding the L" when it's all said and done at the end of the 2018 fall camp.

Don Brown never praised Speight, O'Korn, and Peters.

He praised Patterson (twice!) and McCaffrey.

I would infer something from this...

/I don't have umbig11's credibility on this board but I do know a thing or two about what goes on behind the scenes.

//All fanbases have idiots that are quick to discount players who don't ball out from the start. I recall when some very vocal morons here thought Gentry would transfer. Many of them probably overlap with the knobs who thought Simpson wouldn't amount to anything. Amazingly, some of the same ones are now hoping that Eli Brooks or Austin Davis are on the way out.

They never learn their lesson. It's a remarkable characteristic of idiots - to persist in their stupidity.

Never said peters was going to win. Was just defending him getting a fair shot. I said him and Patterson weren’t light years apart like everyone makes it seem. Thanks for putting words in my mouth though. They also never specifically asked about peters or speight or o’korn. They would just ask about the qbs. Now everyone specifically asks about Shea. You got me on mccaffrey

1. Why did you feel the need to "defend [Peters] getting a fair shot" in a thread?

Do you really think that Jim Harbaugh (who stresses meritocracy) wouldn't give Peters a fair shot to prove himself to be the best QB over 3-4 weeks of intense practices going into a much-anticipated season opener which also happens to be a rivalry game in a make-or-break season?

If yes, that's dumb - a truly dumb opinion.

2. You admitted above that you don't have any info.

I'm giving it to you. Despite improving over the past 6 months, Peters hasn't even separated himself from McCaffrey. Patterson is ahead of both by a significant gap.

3. I didn't put any words in your mouth. Stop it with the inferiority-complex.

1. I don’t think he’s given a fair shake by fans. I also don’t think he was given a fair shake before last season. I think he was the most talented of the three qbs last year but was third in the depth chart for not being vocal enough. Marcus mariota is the same way. I think he should have seen some time in either the PSU or MSU game to get some big game experience.

2. I don’t know why you bring this up, I never claimed to have info in any post. Am I missing something?

Edit: I guess you were referring to me saying that reporters are specifically asking about Shea. Is that me saying I have insider info?

3. I was inferring that you thought I was saying he should be the starting QB. I’m not sure where the inferiority complex comes into play. I guess I don’t understand what I said that was so egregious to get everyone ticked off. I wanted to get a positive thread going for a guy who has received a lot of negative criticism, when he’s just a kid in school playing a sport. I feel the same way about metellus and JOK. Not after john fired back at the school or fan base, however you want to interpret his tweet. But these are just regular guys who are playing a sport while going to college. I’m not sure why individuals need that much negativity. Trying to get the fan base in a positive mood about a player who is for some reason a divisive person among fans is a sin in these parts I guess.

Lesson learned about defending athletes on here that didn’t play well.

@OP:

Listen man, I'm not trying to be antagonistic. (Upon re-reading this exchange, I realize that a few attempts at being witty probably came off as snide/condescending.)

I like Peters - a lot (and probably much more than most here because I value patience). But it's just not his time yet. That said, I'm far more comfortable with the back-ups this time around if there's a "break glass in case of emergency" scenario.

Can’t say I understand the need for this thread? Haven’t seen anyone be negative towards Peters since the bowl game. I’ve seen people be on the fence in regards to him but nothing negative.

Thing is we have a sample size for what Peters and Patterson can do, albeit in different circumstances. I think Patterson is a more dynamic, dual-threat quarterback which is a common feature of most, if not all, CFB playoff teams instead of a pro-style passer.

Unfortunately we open this season away against a ranked, rival team and really need a solidified QB to champion the offense. Peters will get a fair chance to compete but you can’t get upset if the new guy lives up to his potential.

I appreciate the civility. I made the thread because when some fans of Michigan talk about our qbs, they talk about how bad it was last year and always point to the bowl game to paint what type of qb peters is. Is wasn’t to lobby for him to be starter or to claim I know better than coaches or players. I wanted to point out that they are both Uber talented in different ways and either one can win games for us. I should have made it a “QBs not named Shea POSBang” to get us hyped up about all the other talented qbs on the roster. I also did it because there’s 18 days until kickoff, he seems like a divisive figure within the fan base and he plays the most prominent position on the team.  I want the qb who will give Michigan the best chance to win.

He had a whole month as the guy to prepare for the bowl game.  15 dedicated practices to his development.  And he looked lost in the Bowl game.  Great arm talent, but under live bullets not so good with the speed of the game.  That may improve over time, then again some QBs are workout wonders but just not “gamers”.  Jury is still out on Peters.

These kinds of posts and the board’s reaction reminds of of MGoBlog back in the early RichRod days. Michigan went 3-9, and some folks started to question if he really was going to bring us to better times than Lloyd.  Those people were crucified because it wasn’t the majority opinion of the board.  Eventually, as RichRod kept losing, the board flipped and anybody still supporting RichRod was crucified.

For the life of me I don’t understand why so many posters could be negative in response to somebody posting their positive thoughts about one of our players. As we learned in the All or Nothing series, these players see this stuff.

As for the topic at hand, I trust that Harbaugh will give all players an even shot, and will support whomever is selected.  To the OP, don’t worry, if it is Peters the fan base will be 100% behind him by the time he walks off the field at Notre Dame.

Agree it’s snowflakesque.  It’s also OT season where we don’t have a defined mechanism for snowflake postings.  Perhaps we should. In fact, I wouldn’t mind splitting into three boards that run year-round: On Topic, Off Topic, and Snowflake. I digress.

I’ve been reading MGoBlog since 2006.  The culture changed under RichRod and it hasn’t come back.  A lot of unnescessary infighting, IMO. I guess when I read these posts I either say “hooray for Brandon Peters and all of our QB crew” or move on.  Others have taken this opportunity to take shots at Brandon Peters and/or the OP.  It just feels unnecessary.

Get outta here.  BP looked scared the whole bowl game.  So would I if I had been knocked out the way he had in the WI game, but I've never played a down of football.

I challenge anyone to play behind last year's OLine and not be a bit gun-shy after a dozen snaps.  I don't have any problem with the OP - fans turned on Peters quickly, but I think that was mostly a 'live blog' - heat of the moment thing.  I don't think most fans are hating on BP much.

I'm excited to see Patterson, but still glad we have Peters and McCaffrey in the chamber.  Last year's clusterfuck was as much on the OL as anything, IMO.

To be fair to Peters (and Peoples-Jones, and the WR corps...), Peoples-Jones had his foot down in the end zone against Wisconsin.  Peters never has to run the play where he fumbled if the replay official does his ding-dang job!  And, don't get me started on Wisconsin's head hunting...

However, I do share the view that Peters had his chance, and was found wanting.  I expect Shea to start, and wouldn't be surprised at all if McCaffrey is the back-up.

I think this thread illustrates one of the risks in starting posbangs for very specific reasons, not to mention posbangs that require some manner of justification / explanation.
