Exit Eddie McDoom
RIP, greatest name [Patrick Barron]
The 2016 wide receiver class is now entirely kaput per The Wolverine Lounge:
A move that’s been lingering, a source confirmed on Wednesday afternoon that McDoom was no longer in Ann Arbor for fall camp, and no longer with the program.
McDoom was a moderately spicy option on jet sweeps but almost unused otherwise until Michigan inexplicably started throwing him a bunch of fades; misused and apparently buried he's now gone. With little depth on the outside and Grant Perry graduating after the season McDoom seemed like he'd be in line for some playing time, even if it was just as a gadget player; Michigan's failure to deploy him in a sensible way is a bit frustrating. Hopefully having an actual WR coach will help Michigan develop a problem spot more effectively.
This does explain why Michigan's busy taking multiple slots in the 2019 class.
I get why a kid would want more playing time, but given the landing spots of a lot of our transfers, I just... I dunno. I really hope he has good people in his ear.
If he's got NFL potential, then someone (UM or the NFL) will figure it out. If not, he's forfeiting a UM degree for probably something with far lower value in various labor markets.
Given that his coach was a former NFL coach, he stood to get some good advice on the best options (and get a second opinion from the coach's brother) for pro viability. Sometimes it's a bitter pill to swallow, but getting the degree and grad transferring for a 5th year covers the bases for a guy like him.
Shifty, stone hands, poor route runner, zero impact.
Another one bites the dust.
So now all three wrs/TE from West coast have transferred... and MSU has been winning the BIG with Ohio guys ..not a coincidence we now got Kent, All, Barnham, all from Ohio .Harbaugh finally learned he needs to hit Ohio more and the west coast less.
McDoom was from Florida. But yeah recruiting Ohio is important.
It sucks to see him leave; I had hopes for him and Crawford. One small positive note is that it likely means the younger guys have pushed through, which means the floor is reasonably high for the receivers next year.
Should we be really worried about depth at WR?
If an injury strikes, absolutely. Is it only 6 scholarship WRs on the roster, one a true frosh who obviously needs to hit the weights before he is ready.

I'm not too worried, yet. Though it is close.
X - DPJ, Collins, Schoenle
Y - Black, Collins, Martin
Slot - Perry, Martin, McCurry
Martin has the flexibility to play inside/outside. Bell is plausible at 182 lbs. Does Brad Hawkins come back to offense? Guys like Evans and Barrett can fill slot spots. Plenty of receptions available for Gentry/Eubanks/McKeon.
I don't think Crawford/McDoom help if DPJ or Black get hurt. And we have plenty of slot options. Two injuries would be pretty crappy. But again, Hawkins is most likely available to switch to WR at that point.

Hawkins is interesting. No matter what side of the ball he is on. Have to start getting him on the field.
I thought I heard chatter about him having a good spring and being in the mix?
It’s probably for the best. He had 20 pass catches + runs a year for his first two years. That’s not a huge amount, but I’m not sure he’s improved enough to suggest he’ll get more. If he goes somewhere else maybe he gets more time and we get another recruit for 2019.
Sad. I will miss Mcdoooooom
Good luck kid
Great Individual - great effort, great team player is my observation. I was very excited to see him catch a pass. Unfortunately, I suspect he lacked an ability to reliably catch the ball. I always hoped (for the reasons stated above) that he would develop into a Darboh type player. He dropped a lot of passes. I would like to know more about how he might have been miss used. I always thought they used him on sweeps because he was slow in developing as a receiver.
Run him on underneath routes, screens, slants, drags, things like that. Get him the ball in space with room to move. Nothing wrong with the jet sweep, but if that is the only play you run, it is going to be telegraphed. I guess if they don't even trust him to run underneath routes, then you are better off taking the jet sweep out of the playbook.
Makes sense, but I will miss his jet sweeps and name. Sad news.
All of your wide receivers are...our-uh-er...going elsewhere.
Well, the reason why we are recruiting such a big class this year has become clearer with all the defections the last few months. I don’t doubt McDoom was a good kid, but he certainly had not shown any likelihood he could be a difference maker at WR.
If his name were Eddie Jones or Eddie Smith the average fan wouldn't even know who he is. Always felt he was oddly overrated.
He had an impressive highlight tape coming out of HS. Very Breaston like. People who follow recruiting and watch tape would surely know who he was. Average fan probably couldn't name a single guy on the bench who wasn't a QB.

If I had time to figure it out I'd post the Dr. Evil "sh*t" meme.

Aw man, I thought he'd be a contributor here, really like him.

Other than the name what did he show that warranted him being on the field? I think people liked the concept that he was reportedly fast.
Good luck, kid! NEXT!!

Sorry, a simple victim of a meritocracy. With 340 total yards in 2 years McDoom did not do much but take up a roster spot. Trot him out on the field and opposing D could bet on a jet sweep.
Best wishes to him.
I recall one of my first engineering classes at M. We were all told to look to our right and then left...and then told "Realize that odds are either you, or the person to your right or left will not be here to graduate..."
I hate that these kids are leaving the team. No other way to look at it but to say they are quitting. not on the team but on themselves. If they quit now they will probably spend the rest of their lives quitting. probably getting bad advice from someone who has only seen them succeed but don't want them to fail or struggle. Allowing kids to quit is teaching them to fail. if things don't always go your way then just quit and don't try to get better or make something good happen.
I would love to know the conversations Harbaugh has with these kids. I hope he encourages these kids to stick it out and compete before letting them leave.
A really bad trend here. Upperclassmen need to intervene and coach them up on a personal level.

All this hand-ringing is silliness. McDoom's effectiveness was limited because of issues catching the ball. He needs great hands because he's a good but not great athlete. He's clearly been passed on the depth chart by multiple guys. Hopefully he finds a spot and is able to thrive.
