Tuesday Presser Transcript 9-24-13: Brady Hoke Comment Count

Heiko

Bullets:

  • Jake Ryan! Won't be back for Big Ten opener. Maybe by Penn State. "Mid-october" is the target.
  • The only way Graham Glasgow gets moved to center is if there's a capable guard to replace him.

----------------------------------

Opening remarks:

“Good practice today. Back to basics, I think that’s what most of us do during bye weeks, especially the first couple days. Fundamentals, being sound with technique, revisiting technique is always important. I think we did that. We had great intensity. The focus was very good.”

Are there guys that are going to rest this week?

“No. I mean, everybody’s participating, some at different levels than others. Taylor doesn’t need to be out there 30 plays in a practice -- I’ll just use him as an example. You’ll do some of that, but everybody’s doing work.”

For Taylor, has this season been an improvement for him?

“I think he’s playing pretty well. I think he’s been very good as a leader. I think he’s been good fundamentally and technique. I think he’s been pretty good.”

Has he been playing hurt?

“No, I don’t think so.”

You’ve talked about potential depth chart changes. Do you do that this week?

“We would start that today. We’ll work different guys in and out. Defensively, we do that a lot because of how we play. Offensively we’ll do that a little bit.”

What positions are you thinking offensively?

“Well I think the three guys in the middle, the offensive line, are always something that we look at. There’s some guys who have played well in there but there’s great competition behind them. So if a guy has a good practice, good couple days, you may move him up.”

Is it a day to day thing with those guys?

“I think so. I think it always is. I think really at any position, I mean, we’ve had guys who have started, haven’t started some games because the week of practice wasn’t as good as it needed to be.”

Would you be hesitant to move Graham Glasgow to guard center?

“I think the only way we’d be hesitant [about that] is if we didn’t have a guy we thought could do as good a job or better.”

At guard?

“Yes.”

How have Glasgow, Miller, and Kalis responded to the last couple of games?

“Well they’re fine. They’re pretty resilient guys. They’re pretty tough guys. Tough-minded guys.”

What can you say or do with Devin Gardner beyond what you’ve already done to get him to cut down on turnovers?

“I think some of that is outside, what we do. How we compete. The different situations you put him in. I think we’ve got a lot of confidence in him. But at the same time you have to point out those flaws and the things that we haven’t done as well as we need.”

Anything like last year where you had guys carry footballs around campus if they were fumbling too much?

“No, because it really hasn’t been -- I think fumbles haven’t hurt us as much as [interceptions]. The fumble on the quarterback sneak, it was tight in there, we’d love for him to have the ball up a little higher, but he’s trying to find a seam that’s there, and a guy gets knocked backwards. It’s kind of tough. That doesn’t excuse not having the ball up here.”

Al Borges talks about not having to recoach Devin on not making the same error twice. Does that still apply?

“Recoach?”

So that he doesn’t make the same mistake twice.

“He doesn’t. But he has. So we need to, I guess, recoach. Never heard that before.”

You don’t necessarily get to pick your bye weeks, but is this a good time to have one or would you rather be back out there?

“I think this is a good time. We’re four games in. I think it’s a great week for us as a staff to look at personnel, look at special teams personnel, look at the personnel who’s played, look at guys who are improving. Guys like Willie Henry, guys like Ondre Pipkins, see where they’re at in the mix maybe a little more.”

Are the turnovers part of the cost of having a guy who’s mobile?

“Yeah, that’s really a good question. Part of it is that you have guys who are multi-talented. They have had a lot of success being -- I don’t want to say loose, but playing a little bit of sandlot football. You play good teams, you can’t do that. You play teams not as good, you can’t do that. I think it’s a fine line because you’d rather try to tame a bucking bronco than an old mare. That’s kind of what you have to do. But it still comes down to the fundamentals. Our footwork and all the things that you know. At the end of the day, it’s always, any position comes down to fundamentals.”

As somebody who spends so much time with the defensive line, how disappointed have you been in their lack of production?

“Oh I don’t know. I don’t know if I’m disappointed. I think the effort’s pretty good. I think the technique at times needs to be a little better. Would we like to have more sacks? You always do. But there’s been some pressures there. There’s been some things that have prevented us from sacking a guy, either break contain or something like that, but I think they’re working awfully hard.”

How’s Jake Ryan doing?

“Jake’s doing well.”

Is he participating?

“Mmhmm.”

How likely would he play in the Big Ten opener?

“I don’t think that would be the game.”

So more mid --

“October. October … Sometime in October.”

You got more pressure against UConn. Is that a product of what UConn did, or were you happy with the way your guys won some one-on-one matchups?

“I think we beat some one-on-ones. They would be a six-man protection not as much. Some of the play-action stuff, yes, but not something that they did a lot of.”

How do you balance physical practices with resting your players during the bye week?

“Our schedule, I think we think as a staff, is a good schedule. Because we can accomplish both. We’re going to physical. We’re going to be competitive, which I think we have to continue because your timing and fundamentals of how you want to play. At the same time it’s an opportunity to not play guys as many plays as they would in a normal week.”

What is your schedule this week?

“We go Thursday and then Friday morning.”

Is there a reason why Devin feels like he has to be superman?

“I think he’s been superman a long time. I think when you grow up being superman, you have that in your mind. He’s competitive, and the thing that I talk to him about is there’s 10 other guys. And then you have 11 guys on defense. And then you have kicking game. It’s everybody together. I think he hears that.”

So is it a little bit of a trust issue?

“Trust in who?”

Understanding the other 10 guys are there.

“I don’t think there’s a lack of trust. It’s just what’s innately in him. It’s in his DNA.”

Was there a similar mindset with Denard, and did you learn anything from him?

“Denard was very much a guy that could make a lot of plays and made a lot of plays.”

Did you learn anything from dealing with him that you can apply to Devin?

“I’ve been dealing with this 30-some years.”

You said that Fitz Toussaint will get a bit more rest.

“We’ll rest him a little bit this week. He’s one of those guys that you don’t need to -- ”

Which of the backs do you want to work in more?

“De'Veon Smith, Derrick Green. Justice Hayes ran the ball a little bit more today.”

Do you think your team got better last week?

“Oh yeah. There wasn’t any doubt. It was a much different team.”

You said the ship’s not sinking. Do you get that there’s a little sense of panic because the wins were a little too close?

“Panic by who?”

Your people. Your fans.

“We don’t really worry about it to be honest with you. We’ve got great fans. They are welcome to their opinions.”

1. He's 4-0 and has beaten ND.  2. His first 2 full recruiting classes are frosh and sophs.  3. We new we may have problems on the interior of both lines and TE (blocking); ya, we do.     Now, if DG takes care of the ball better and gets his confidence back, this team will be fine (or elite), despite the issues noted above.

Where are the upper class men guards and center we should have? Where are all the receivers? The defense was deteriorating every year under RR, that is the reason he got canned.  Hoke's first year was a fluke. If he finished 7-5 that year he would be right on track. '11 7-5, '12 8-4 '13 8-4? '14 9-3 '15 until he retires 10 + wins most likely.

they are welcome to their opinons= the fanbase is a bunch of dumb fucks who don't have a clue what's going on.
Well, pardon me for saying so, but your interpretation of that statement is a bit of a stretch. Maybe not for Bo Pelini, but certainly for Hoke. Honestly, I'm not sure if you're a troll, but I'm leaning heavily toward troll.

Disrespectful?

Why do you think Hoke owes the press or you any information whatsoever? Hoke's job is to coach a bunch of 18-23 year old boys to play hard and compete for a title, which is ALL he owes anyone.  Pleasing the press or an increasingly entitled fans base is nowhere in the job description.

I would have answered it along the lines of. "We've got great fans. I know there is a lot of concern and panic among our fanbase but we are doing our very best to correct the issues that we are having on both sides of the football".

The "they are entitled to their opinions" makes it seem like the staff feels that this team is playing excellent and us fans are just a bunch of ignorant dumba$$'s who don't know the first thing about football. That's what I found disrespectful in regards to my earlier posts.

To be fair, most fans are ignorant dumbasses. Ie. half the presser questions and a lot of comments on this site..  What coach is going to agree with the fans and basically say, "Sorry that our sucking is making you panic. We'll make changes and be better after the bye." It was a diplomatic answer. And we are entitled to our own opinions.

It doesn't matter if the fans are panicking or not. It doesn't affect the football team or the coaches. Talking about their concern and panic would be disingenuous at best. And frankly, most of them are ignorant dumbasses, especially when it comes to what the team is actually going through.

But he still manages to say they are great fans (though that can be debated) and that they can have their opinions. Maybe he should have added "but that won't change how out football team prepares."

September 25th, 2013 at 10:59 AM ^

It shouldn't matter to the team itself how the fans feel our how they prepare for the next game. but, to this press conference to me says that the team is performing wonderfully on all cylinders and the fan base is idiotic. I agree that most fans don't truly know all that's going on or what practice is like. But we can make very educated guesses based on what we are seeing in games, and these last two games have left me and most of our fanbase with a ton of questions about where this football team is. The fact that Hoke doesn't seem to understand or acknowledge our concerns and that we the fans, are simply a bunch idiots running around like chickens with our heads cut off seems downright disrespectful.

Hoke for a long time, to wit:

1 year 2 days ago fire brady hoke. he clearly is not the man for the job. last years record was a combination of luck and teams giving us the win. this year we've played 4 games and 3 of them have been atrocious. choke is clearly not capable of being the coach of a big time program.

Hoke sees the kids every day in practice, and he has been playing/coaching football his whole life -- essentially, he knows more about the team AND football than pretty much anyone, especially on this board.  His response was basically him saying, "don't panic guys, this is kinda what we expected going into the season."

But somehow, that is not good enough for you 98.  Somehow, you want more.  Personally I don't think there is any need to panic.  I think the team is right where is should be considering the lingering depth and experience issues which can only be overcome by time.

Who is MGoBlog user "98"? Inquiring minds want to know. Here are a number of guesses:

  • (a) Devin Gardner: He uses number "98" after all.
  • (b) Shane Morris: Wants people to think "98" is DG, and use that to get DG benched
  • (c) Hoke's daughter: Sick of living in Ann Arbor, trying to start "Fire Hoke" movement
  • (d) A 13-year old who discovered that it is easy to get people riled up on MGoBlog

I am leaning towards (d).

What's your guess?

Coming from the guy that wanted to keep the guy that won as many B1G games in three years as Hoke has in each of the past two seasons (6). The guy won a BCS bowl and took a really good South Carolina team to the brink last year, and last I checked, is 4-0, where as last year was 2-2. I remember last year we had trouble with Air Force too. It happens. You need to calm down bud, you sound a bit out of sorts.

Whoever keeps talking about mobility having anything to do with turnovers from the QB position is an idiot.  Devin's mobility is a huge plus, he just needs to protect the ball better.  It would also help if we didn't tip what we're doing to the defense....

This is like that scene in "When Harry Met Sally," when Carrie Fisher keeps saying about the married guy she's having the affair with, "He's never going to leave her." And although she keeps saying it,  Carrie Fisher just can't quite believe that the guy really isn't ever going to leave his wife.

Brady Hoke is never going to tell us anything. (deep sigh)

I have watched more press conferences on tv than anyone else which literally makes me an expert of beyond refute, and this one takes the cake.  It is vastly suboptimal and I think a voting process to determine the veracity of such press conferences is in order.  All ass loving aside, this is Michigan fergodsakes. We Love Academia. (that is not a code phrase for the WLA though I am sure some of you miniots will think that.)  No one insulted anyone's wife, even the ugly and stupid ones who cook like Morticia on the Addams Family.  So what you never pulled on a jock strap in your entire life and so what there are poop stains on your sliderule--that does not disqualify you from being the world renown expert on college football?  That argument is played out.  so, in conclusion, bomb ann arbor now is a great song--don't hate.

I bleed maize and blue, even though they denied me entrance just because i didn't graduate from some stupid high school.  I have a statue of Bo at home, and i painted his pants dark brown.

you guys are ridiculous...Hoke coaches for his players and the M brand first, pleasing the fans and media comes second, and that should come naturally with winning, Hoke kows ultimately he is judged by wins, losses, and championships...if we as fans cannot appreciate 4-0 so far this year, 23-7 in his first 30 games,17-0 at home, and recruiting step for step with OSU and the SEC big dogs for the first time in 10 years, we have problems.

You act as if Hoke isn't addressing the obvious issues the team has. Trust me, if we can see the problems, he sees them as well, and then some. The coaches will scheme and coach their asses off to try and fix or mitigate those problems....all the armchair coaching on this site is ridiculous. Sometimes I think us here at MgoBlog would rather see Brian calling plays and adjusting the depth chart.

The media is a nothing but a necessary evil and annoyance at best to any head football coach that actually cares about his team and the school's brand first. Woody knew that, Bo knew that, Lloyd knew that, and Hoke knows it too. I know ESPN talking heads and sports writers act as if they have the real answers and solutions, but they do not have any answers, about anything. They are trained to spin and persuade, nothing else. Reality sits with Hoke, and he doesn't want the media spinning the reality of his team, given why he shows "disrespect" to them.

Hello, i am a long time reader, first time poster. I created an account because of what I have seen going on here lately. I am 18 but as michigan fan as any of you. I love the tradition of Michigan as my grandpas dad had season tickets and we still have them today.

What I would like to point out is the general dislike for a) the blog content or rules and b) the team and the coaching staff.

First i understand everyone is entitled to an opinion and should be able to voice said opinion. But i think what the blog staff is trying to say is that if all your going to post is negative why are you here? I agree with that assessment. Its a free market, if this blog is not up to your standards, you have voiced your opinion, and nothing changes move on. There are other blogs out there and if none of those suit your interest level or standards start your own. The MGoBlogStaff is not forcing you to read their content. If you have something to point out they can do better by all means let them know. If they decide not to use your feedback to not continue posting negatively bringing down other users experience. It, in the end, is their blog and they will do as they please. If you dont like that move on but dont post only negative stuff to the site(not that i accuse anyone of this just what i've seen lately)

Now to answer point b). It brings me saddness to see all this bashing of players and coaches to a program I have watched in the big house since I was 2. I do believe we are allowed to crituique players and coaches but it feels like many have just resorted only bashing and not pointing out the good. To end this point i refer back to point a). If you are only going to be negative and never positive move on. The team is 4-0 and whether production is there or not they play their hearts out every snap even when the going is tough. If you expect more from 18-23 year old student athletes well thats on you.... but as an athlete myself all I could ever do is give 100% and hope it shows. I think thats all that counts. I just want this blog to be the same blog my dad loved and introduced me to. The direction this season has sent it has discouraged me but Im sure it isnt permanent as you are all true fans of the Maize and Blue like me!

Have a great day and most importantly GO BLUE

Well said lad, well said!

Personally, I think that many fans have a hard time dealing with the reality of the depth and experience situation -- in much the same way that they did when RR was here.  When you have a program like Michigan's that is elite for decades, fans come to expect the status quo to exist in perpetuity.  However, as everyone knows (or should know) all things are in constant flux, and will eventually change.  To this day, fans debate the "bare cupboard" that RR inherited, if it was so, when it started, and whether or not we're STILL experiencing a downturn that began over a decade ago.

I've commented many times in here, and elsewhere, that depth is that precious commodity that every football team covets and works diligently to cultivate.  I was a RR supporter, not because I particularly liked RR or felt any allegiance to him, but because I had studied and understood the depth issues that Carr had passed to him.  With those issues, IMO, he was hamstrung from Day 1, and much of the hatred towards him might have been mitigated if more people understood these issues.

"But we're Michigan..." is essentially what I think plaugues a lot of Michigan fans.  They cannot fathom why their team, the winningest team in history, with the highest winning percentage, the Big House, etc. can struggle.  When you read the negative comments of which you spoke -- especially when you seem them saying Hoke isn't the guy -- you can see that sentiment clearly on display.  They want to blame every mistake, every missed assignment, every close call on Hoke & Co., because they cannot wrap their minds around the fact that maybe, just maybe, Michigan is starting players that are young and maybe less talented because they're still dealing with depth issues.

If people cannot seet that Hoke is going to be Michigan's next great coach, I don't know what to tell them.  The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, and negative Nancy's always seem to think that there is a better coach out there that will do a better job than the one they have.  Sometimes they're right, but everything that I have seen/read/heard from Hoke tells me that he is EXACTLY what Michigan needs to again contend for the Big 10 and National Championships.

Stop turning the ball over, and Michigan's 4-0 looks a lot different than it does now.
