If the players don't get windbreakers when playing in space, then he's not wearing one either.
October 17th, 2012 at 12:54 PM ^
Honey Brady don't need a windbreaker - his natural insulation keeps him warm.

let's get rid of the white hats. They look absurd. Regular blue hats with the Block M, a la Bo, Mo, and LLO. The white hats are so very Les Milish. Ugh. But I understand why Hoke (Ho!?) doesn't wear a hat. Dude's got a big noggin. Would look like a walking candy apple with a baseball hat on.
October 17th, 2012 at 11:43 AM ^
They're all wearing white caps because of the itty bitty pink on them.
October 17th, 2012 at 12:45 PM ^
No, they wear white hats every game. If you go to MDen, they have white hats on sale that say they are the official hats worn by players and staff.
October 17th, 2012 at 3:07 PM ^
I think the white hats with pink on them look sweet. Just ordered one for myself as a matter of fact.
October 17th, 2012 at 11:43 AM ^
There's a chance the white hats are used so the players can easily spot a coach signaling in plays or formations. A blue hat amongst a sea of soaking blue jerseys, helmets, and fans might be tough to spot.

...the aesthetics appear to be all wrong, my guess is that the color (absence of color?) choice is designed to increase the visibility of the coaches on the sideline when viewed from the field. Sometimes you have to allow form to follow function and learn to appreciate the resulting outcome. It's way superior to ND's use of red ball caps for its backup QB signal relayers.

You might be interested in revisiting my analysis of Brady Hoke's provocative decision not to sport a Michgan baseball cap, written before the 2011 season. See the post entitled Brady Hoke a "Michigan Man"? Where’s the baseball cap?
(Sorry, I don't know how to link to posts.)

I admire Hoke. I just do. For lots of reasons. He seems to be precisely who he seems to be.

I can confirm your assumption. My Wife's OB/GYN told me all about going to school in Kettering with Coach Hoke and his wife (while she was performing a C-section, no less). Apparently, the Doctor was the captain of the cheerleading squad while Coach was the captain of the football team. She could not say enough about what wonderful people Coach and his Wife both are. Furthermore, she said they have both been the exact same people since their days together in high school. Last, the Doc told me that even though she was an OSU alumna, she was now a Michigan fan and would be as long as Coach Hoke was in charge.
Then the baby came out and we got sidetracked. College football didn't seem to be an appropriate topic any longer.

I was an English major once upon a time, and at that time, they were capitalized, if you are referring to a specific person. If i was just referring to any doctor or any wife, then lower case is fine.
Now if they've updated the MLA in the last 15 years, well...GET OFF MY LAWN!!!!
(I have included several grammatical errors in this message for your enjoyment. Have fun!)

In the first half he had his Chuckstrong shirt on as an undershirt. He did change his undershirt for the 2nd half.

Ain't no shame in buyin' a shirt with sleeves. It's easier to rip them suckers off than to put 'em back on. That's just science y'all.

If Brady dresses for success during inclement weather, he probably wouldn't be sick so often. The expectation is for taking the position of dressing properly for the weather. His mother taught him better than this. Why make your mom look bad Brady?
October 17th, 2012 at 11:58 AM ^
His "it's mid-season and so my vocal cords are scratched" voice and his sick voice are so similar, I can never tell which is happening.
Love this post.

Other coaches use up valuable time putting on longsleeved shirts and/or jackets. Brady's clothing method is more efficient and allows him extra time to coach.
I'm just surprised that Nick Saban hasn't realized this. When he does, he'll probably start coaching in a loincloth, with graduate assistants following him around with portable space heaters.
October 17th, 2012 at 1:03 PM ^
Please. No. Not that.

I would like to request a fur coat ala the opening scenes of Gladiator, if at all possible. Are we not taking requests on the future Hoke-drobe?
October 17th, 2012 at 11:59 AM ^
Eff it. I'm going with my short sleeve shirt goddammit!
Even Schembechler had the common sense to wear a windbreaker for crying out loud:

Not all coaches, however, share Brady's aversion to warmth and prefer to dress in their outside clothes....

Say what you will about Fontes, he's still the only living Lions coach to have won a playoff game.
October 17th, 2012 at 12:41 PM ^
I remember him looking like Nanook of the North and laughing my ass off. The man hated cold weather, and it showed.
October 17th, 2012 at 1:06 PM ^
Fontes only liked one type of white powdery substance. Snow was not it.

Even mild hypothermia can have negative effects on critical thinking skills. That said, it probably doesn't take much thought on gameday if your gameplan is to call 50 fullback dives and berate the officials.
October 17th, 2012 at 12:01 PM ^
I rushed back to the office early from lunch for this?
October 17th, 2012 at 12:06 PM ^
You know you're old (and a parent) when you find yourself thinking "self, I wish Brady Hoke would wear more weather-appropriate clothes so he doesn't catch a cold and miss practice." Eeeesh. What happened to those carefree and childless years?
October 17th, 2012 at 12:08 PM ^
I don't know why I care what the hell our coach wears on the sidelines, whether he says "Ohio" or "Ohio State", or that he refers to all injuries as booboos (giving the media zilch in terms of info) but I do.
Hoke really is just awesome in so many ways. Not because he wears shortsleeves in a cold, soaking rain. But it certainly doesn't hurt.
October 17th, 2012 at 12:10 PM ^
Ok...I think we lost Brian. Maybe the cold meds are taking over his soul.

is that I grew up in the early 60s listening to my father fulminate about what an asshole Woody Hayes was, and he specifically would mention Woody's penchant for going sleeveless and coatless regardless of the weather.
That's the sole item of resemblance between the two coaches, thank God.
October 17th, 2012 at 12:46 PM ^
Ahhh, but don't forget about Hoke only referring to OSU as Ohio. That is so Woody Hayes.
October 17th, 2012 at 1:17 PM ^
Except our coach isn't, you know, an irascible asshole
October 17th, 2012 at 1:32 PM ^
To be sure there are big differences between Hoke and Woody. Being an irascible asshole certainly being one of them. But if Hoke has a few mannerisms that are comparable to Woody, then dressing like him on the sideline and referring to your rivals without calling them by name are two that I would not be upset with. Winning a lot of football games like Hayes would be cool too.
