Disagree...(it's live on BTN right now). I think he's doing a solid job. Keeping LJ Sr. on staff too (best recruiter / good coach). He will be in over is head, but not in this presser so far.
January 7th, 2012 at 12:01 PM ^
LJ Sr.= Penn State's Fred Jackson?

but faster!

He the only coach he's retaining? It'll be interesting to see what happens to the defensive players if Bradley is gone.

Water is wet?
this is like the fifth thread that basically says he is a tire fire in the making
January 7th, 2012 at 11:53 AM ^
How about giving him a chance first. I'm gonna bookmark this post and if PSU goes 9-3 or 10-2 next year I'm gonna punch you in the face (figuratively speaking of course)
January 7th, 2012 at 11:56 AM ^
If they go 6-6 or 5-7, does he get to punch you in the face?
January 7th, 2012 at 12:05 PM ^
In the balls.
January 7th, 2012 at 11:56 AM ^
Next year, I'll punch myself in the face until I knock myself out. Seriously, that program is fucked for a while.
January 7th, 2012 at 11:57 AM ^
I'm just glad it's their problem and not ours.
January 7th, 2012 at 12:13 PM ^
To that brother
January 7th, 2012 at 1:51 PM ^
As awful as it is to speculate about, I honestly can't think of another FBS program that would be in the same type of situation. The cult of personality around Paterno and his program is probably unmatched in sports, and that had an awful lot to do with the tire fire that is PSU football.
January 7th, 2012 at 3:45 PM ^
And I'm not saying this just because I hate them. The cult around Coach K is very similar to the one around JoePa. He gets a little more like Bobby Knight every year in terms of being dismissive and even mocking to the press and no one dares say a word. He could cover up just about anything in his program if he wanted to IMO.

Virginia Tech may have similar issues if they don't hire a Beamer guy to replace him. Beamer has been there 25 years and has guided them through their entire major-conference history.
January 7th, 2012 at 11:57 AM ^
And it sounded to me like he was reading a script given to him by the AD. He was clearly reading off of a sheet and stumbling through words, and at the end read out loud a letter to the PSU alums he "wrote all by myself last night"
January 7th, 2012 at 11:57 AM ^
O'Brien has done a great job so far. What are you referencing?
January 7th, 2012 at 12:22 PM ^
who read every answer. His communication style sucks.
January 7th, 2012 at 1:21 PM ^
Who cares? Media communication and player communication are far different. In the former, being a robot is often an advantage.
Michigan fans. Putting waaaaaaaaaaay too much stock into introductory press conferences since 2007.
January 7th, 2012 at 1:34 PM ^
Yep, from the BB school of communications.

for a pre-hire briefing. He could have given them the road map to failure, or at least a copy of his book.
January 7th, 2012 at 12:09 PM ^
At least they have a coach now and not a mascot that rides around in golf cart during practice.
January 7th, 2012 at 12:09 PM ^
are going to re-direct all of their anger over the Sandusky scandal and its fall out into the new coach then he's doomed. Recruiting is going to be tough for PSU for a few years, and it's not like Paterno left him a QB. This guy has a thankless job.
That said, I'd give it a go for what they are going to pay him.
January 7th, 2012 at 1:24 PM ^
It's no-lose.
If he succeeds, he's a genius and finds himself in the middle of a big talent hot spot. If he fails, his stock hardly goes down in the football world since everyone knows this is such a uniquely difficult situation. Surprised other young coaches didn't see that.
January 7th, 2012 at 3:32 PM ^
There's some logic there, maybe for the first year it'll even be true. But things don't work that way. A few mediocre years will hurt his career plenty.
January 7th, 2012 at 12:13 PM ^
I think he did fine, what do you expect. He is a coach. PSU problems are on the offensive side. If he adapts, he will be fine. Except for this year, they have had some good recruiting classes. I would be worried, if he has some success, of him moving to the NFL.
January 7th, 2012 at 12:18 PM ^
I still dont understand why they didnt keep tom Bradley? That guy would have fit in perfect and knows all the recruiting areas. Paterno hasnt been coaching the last 6-7 years anyways, he was so out of it. Paterno was basically a mascot.
January 7th, 2012 at 12:22 PM ^
Because it is a fresh start. Keeping Bradley would have opened up questions by parents about what he knew, I am a bit suprised that they kept Johnson, but they needed recruiting.
January 7th, 2012 at 6:08 PM ^
They needed a clean break. Paterno had way too much power at the university, and they were probably concerned about that transferring to Bradley if he succeeded Joe Pa.
January 7th, 2012 at 12:22 PM ^
the next month since he's still with the Pats throughout the playoffs. He will have limited time to sit with recruits. I think PSU fans are hoping the Patriots lose quickly in the playoffs, which they won't, since signing day comes around Super Bowl time. I'm sure he'll rely heavily on staff to recruit but it's going to be rough not having his full attention during the final recruiting push.
January 7th, 2012 at 12:27 PM ^
I thought he won't be with the Pats? that's why the Pats are going to bring Mcdaniels back for the play offs.
January 7th, 2012 at 12:38 PM ^
the initial reports that came out said he was staying with the Pats through the playoffs...if so, how does that affect the offense for New England? I'm sure Super Tom could call the plays himself, I think I'd rather have him than McDaniels (who is unfamiliar at this point with the plays) to make the calls.
January 7th, 2012 at 12:44 PM ^
O'Brien will be doing both duties. They're bringing in McDaniels to cover their asses and to be prepared for the playofs, which IMO is smart. He'll take over the OC role next year once BOB is gone. Last time, when Charlie Weis both coached ND and the Pats, they won the Super Bowl. I'm hoping for a similar result this year (I'm a Patriots fan).
January 7th, 2012 at 1:26 PM ^
Pats just don't seem to have "it" this year. It's hard to explain. Just doesn't feel like a title team.
Of course, they did feel like one last year and look what happened.
January 7th, 2012 at 2:05 PM ^
It's because Super Bowl winning teams usually have good defenses. The Patriots defense is last in yards allowed and middle of the pack in points allowed. They're not good and it's frustrating to watch, especially when you have one of the best quarterbacks in the history of the league. I feel like the Pats have been wasting his prime by not making a more concerted effort to have a stronger defense.
January 7th, 2012 at 3:08 PM ^
GB may have more stars on their defense but they aren't much better numbers wise. Not sure about the Saints' numbers but their identity is still on the offensive side.
January 7th, 2012 at 3:18 PM ^
The main difference between the Packers and the Patriots defense is that GB gives up yards trying to make big plays (getting turnovers). They can get away with that because they have the players to do it (Woodson, Williams, Matthews). The Patriots do not have the players to do that.

I'm not listening to it, but Joe Schad has been tweeting that it's going well.

I'm not sure why everyone is so damn confident that PSU's football program is headed into the crapper for a long time. Sounds like wishful thinking. Chances are this won't end up resulting in NCAA sanctions. It doesn't involved competitive advantages or recruiting, etc. It's a problem for the school more than the program. And it is a huge problem, obviously.
Big programs are hugely resilient. PSU, in a year or two, will go back to recruiting kids who spent their entire lifetimes wanting to play for PSU.
January 7th, 2012 at 1:33 PM ^
Yeah, IDK how much truth there is to it but if the NCAA really wants to hammer them, I'm sure they could find a way, especially if it comes out that people like Paterno and other coaches were more in the know than we know now. At least that's what I've been reading in other places.
January 7th, 2012 at 2:38 PM ^
They have no bylaws against this, their bylaws and jurisdiction was restricted to competition and rules related, ie recruiting, practice, contact time and academics. None of these issues are covered even in any bylaw.
jmo, pennst should give their report to the ncaa along with a great big efff off this isn't your jurisdiction and and fyi these are the steps we took to clean house and make sure that the people are gone that failed this situation and these steps are in place to prevent it from ever happening again, thanks for inquiring.
January 7th, 2012 at 1:56 PM ^
This program will quickly recover because there are no sanctions and loss of scholarships. The only downfall may be the new coaches lack of recruiting since he will stay with New England thru the playoffs. But don't think for a minute that that PSU won't be PSU next year. When the Sandusky drama is old news the football program will refocus and get back to normal. They might be better.
January 7th, 2012 at 4:13 PM ^
They won't get sanctioned but the stigma attached to that program now is something that is unlike anything we have ever seen. Recruiting is going to be damn near impossible for them because, simply put, nobody in their right mind wants to be associated with that program right now. They will be back but it will be very bleak for the foreseeable future.
January 7th, 2012 at 4:42 PM ^
they need a QB
January 7th, 2012 at 4:51 PM ^
They've needed a quarterback ever since Kerry Collins graduated.
January 7th, 2012 at 2:36 PM ^
The AD and president possibly committed a crime, Paterno didn't. What he did was wrong, but it wasn't a crime, and it didn't break any NCAA rules did it?
January 7th, 2012 at 1:01 PM ^
Rich Rodriguez is SOOOO relevant!
