Its probably got more to do with Google Adsense. The program basically throws ads on a site for individual users based on previous site views, so if you look at Spartan related things a lot they are going to pop up to you more.
August 12th, 2011 at 3:27 PM ^
Then why am I getting banners advertising midget porn?
August 12th, 2011 at 11:33 AM ^
I believe the ads are "Google ads," so they take your past browsing experiences to advertise products related to what you have searched for. Basically it's personalized advertising, so what do you look at on a regular basis?
August 12th, 2011 at 11:35 AM ^
Unless my computer has been hacked that garbage will never appear on my screen.
August 12th, 2011 at 11:44 AM ^
It also takes into account page and site content and who has purchased ad space. It probably doesn't help that people keep bringing them up in comments. Plus, Michigan probably hasn't purchased ad space because they don't need to while, so Google is settling for the next best thing when "Michigan" and "Football" appear 50,000 times for each page load.

You've read previews of UM vs MSU, this site has a Kirk Cousin's thing down in mgolicious, and odds are you read B1G news which includes MSU. Thus like it or not, you do have MSU in your cache. Heck simply calling up a recruiting profile where both UM and MSU have offered puts MSU in your browsing history.
I keep getting credit card ads and ads in Korean. I think Google wants me to max out a few cards on international airfare.
August 12th, 2011 at 1:12 PM ^
LIAR!
Google ads have exposed you!
August 12th, 2011 at 4:24 PM ^
It got us talking, right?

August 12th, 2011 at 11:35 AM ^
This.
August 12th, 2011 at 12:41 PM ^
Exactly, at worst, it's an occasional banner ad so just scroll down.
August 12th, 2011 at 11:36 AM ^
Can someone explain why they actually need ads in the first place? Oh yeah, because they're State and nobody knows who they are.
August 12th, 2011 at 1:18 PM ^
that they are a national program, now. Getting the word out.
August 12th, 2011 at 11:36 AM ^
I never look at MSU related stuff, and this is always on my screen.. as a banner

Obviously Kirk Cousins is paying for these ads

A few weeks back there was an ad for buying MSU football season tickets!
They should try giving them away...
August 12th, 2011 at 2:34 PM ^
They'd have to pay me to go see that s***.
August 12th, 2011 at 11:40 AM ^
We had this stupid complaint before. Stop talking about Sparty and the ads will go away.
August 12th, 2011 at 11:40 AM ^
Some of the ads that have appeared relate to recent Google searches I performed. So if you're getting MSU ads, I suggest you stop Googling MSU and/or posting anything about MSU on the Board.
/s, but not really
August 12th, 2011 at 11:44 AM ^
Seriously, quit looking at the Sparty pron. It's nobody's fault but your own (and Google's).
August 12th, 2011 at 12:08 PM ^
You sir are correct.

August 12th, 2011 at 11:52 AM ^
Can someone please inform me as to why in the hell we have Carnival Ads on here? The prices are incredibly low, but I don't like crowds or food poisoning.
Also, why is Embassy Suites advertising food. You're a hotel Embassy Suites, put your hand down.
August 12th, 2011 at 11:57 AM ^
The ads are tailored to what is being talked about on the site. So, for instance, you posting this topic on the board makes a State ad more likely to show up on this site. So essentially you are helping cause the ads.
August 12th, 2011 at 1:20 PM ^
are covered in U of M ads most of the time?
August 12th, 2011 at 1:43 PM ^
Very much so.
August 12th, 2011 at 3:23 PM ^
I bet you that U-M ads are better than MSU ads.
August 12th, 2011 at 12:02 PM ^
Click on the ads..msu ends up paying mgoblog fir site views.
August 12th, 2011 at 12:21 PM ^
It's impressive and depressing that simply seeing an ad for something MSU works you up to the point that you have to complain about it to the whole internet. Chill out, man. Do you go around spraypainting people's yards blue too?
August 12th, 2011 at 12:54 PM ^
People complain about EVERYTHING daily on this board and yet you are still surprised. Sparty doesn't upset me...my wife and family are spartans. I see it everywhere I go must I have to see it on the one place I seek solitude?!
August 12th, 2011 at 12:31 PM ^
To start I have never seen a Spartan ad on mgoblog, but I know they exist since we play them every year. Also, last year every time I went to Subway they had point of sell Spartan promotions that said something like, buy a Subway meal, and buy a football ticket, get a free ticket. Then I was once on a family member’s computer during football season who is a Spartan. The only ads were for penis enlargement, erectile dysfunction, and pleas to buy Spartan Football tickets. From that moment on I understood his anger was not directed at me. Can you imagine the personal hell he is living as a Spartan Fan?
August 12th, 2011 at 12:51 PM ^
I welcome the spartan ads on this website. It should be an absolute waste of advertising dollars flowing into Brian's pocket. It's not like anyone from this site would actual purchase anything that would benefit MSU and it shows a lack of business sense for MSU and their decision makers.
August 12th, 2011 at 12:52 PM ^
It is my understanding that every time you click an ad, the company who owns that add gets charged a certain fee. Feel free to correct me, but if that's the case I think that every time this add pops up, we should click, and for the love of God don't buy anything there. That way Brian get's some pocket change, and the MSU Athletic Dept. gets a big fat bill.
August 12th, 2011 at 12:59 PM ^
don't really care for sparty ads and don't think he is making a big deal out of it. Mgoblog is peppered with Maize and Blue for a reason. So when I see a green banner at the top of the page, it sort of just gives me a sick feeling.
It does however make me laugh to see them with an advertisement on Mgoblog. Makes you question their Basket Weaving(business) school. Great way to spend advertising $$. If we advertise there, we can get all the Wolverine fans to become sparty fans.
August 12th, 2011 at 1:18 PM ^
I saw the more Spartan ads the better. And you should click on each on. Let those dumb bastards pay for ads that will have zero effect.
August 12th, 2011 at 3:06 PM ^
I love this post.
August 12th, 2011 at 4:08 PM ^
Are we taking the money from Sparty or Actionsportart.com. The ad actually goes there.
August 12th, 2011 at 1:21 PM ^
a Doc Johnson sex toy ad on your mother's crochet blog, though.
August 12th, 2011 at 1:42 PM ^
The ads come up based on automated content analysis. It's not like we have someone going and selling ads to MSU. Michigan State is buying ads from an agency that puts it onto sites based on what people are talking about on that site, and also what individual users tend to look at, click on, etc. The advertiser gets to pick what keywords and stuff they want.
The reason MSU stuff comes up so often is twofold:
1. "Michigan" and "state" are said a lot on here.
2. MSU's core market is people who are obsessed with Michigan.
August 12th, 2011 at 1:54 PM ^
It’s consistent with the Mark Dantonio’s plan of building a relevant program by jumping on Michigan’s coat tails.
August 12th, 2011 at 2:46 PM ^
