Ouch - that’ll really hurt him. Hope he can improve on 2nd run.
4.91 for the second run...
Well, he did improve...
About to be living that UDFA life.
If I remember correctly OSU's wideouts just ran 4.31, 4.33 and 4.41.
That's.... not at all what I was expecting from him. Thought he'd be in the 4.7 range, maybe a bit lower. He definitely seemed faster than that on the field. Curious what his 3 cone time will be, maybe he's more quick than fast.
He never was all that fast to begin with. I would've been shocked if he ran 4.7
He finished 19th out of 19 in the shuttle drill, and 18th out of 19 in the three cone drill. With that 40 time (16 out of 19)...no chance in hell the dude is getting drafted unless he has an otherworldly pro day.
Obligatory should have stayed comment here

My thoughts as well. I’m ready to transition on from the heavy TE, FB and whatever the **** Poggi did type sets, and start moving the ball quicker, to faster athletes.
Leaving early was not the right choice. I was surprised he did. Good luck I hope he gets drafted and has an outstanding NFL career
Make no mistake, that’s shockingly bad, but he’ll have more chances. Remember that Funchess ran a 4.7 on his first combine run, then improved at our pro day. Hopefully Gentry can show similar improvement or else he won’t be drafted.
Do they run a laser timed 40 at the pro day?
I think so?
I'm not sure why but 40 times are always better on pro days than at the combine. Maybe the athletes are more comfortable? Maybe its shenanigans?
I was under the impression pro days were hand timed vs laser.
I'm not 100% sure, but it always seems pro day 40 times are between 0.10-0.20 faster.. generally the worse a player ran at the combine, the more he magically improves at one's pro day.
No, they use a hand time. They mentioned on the NFL Combine broadcast. That's why you still see guys using hand times at the combine, so they can compare with similar pro day times.
It's weird that they'd go through that extra trouble to compare apples to apples when the apples are rotten anyway (hand timing). Just subtract 0.2 from the laser and that's what the hand timed run will be approx. Or add 0.2 to the hand timed run to get the laser if you're going that direction.
Nope. NFL teams don't go by FAT time and uses their scouts stopwatches for their recorded time for comparison accuracy sake.
It's not great, but: 1. Funchess wound up being a WR, and has succeeded there; 2. Not all TEs have blazing 40s. Also turning in a 4.91 was... Isaac Nauta. You know, the guy we wanted that went to Georgia and was quite good there.
My recollection of the player's comments on his surprising speed was it was "once he got going". So it was related to a surprising top end not quickness off the line. I never expected him to post a good 40 time.

At least he’s sure handed and a great blocker.
Frightfully witty, old boy! Plus-one as it were.
I believe that put him 15th for TE’s.. Earlier this week he stated “But I think I’ll just be faster than everybody thinks I’m going to be." Maybe he was referring to other drills and not the 40?
Hope you left school with a good degree, man.
He's fine. If he doesn't make it in the NFL, he will make it as on camera talent. TV Execs will cream over his good looks and public speaking abilities. In the interviews I saw last year, he's excellent on camera.
He was decent here but less than timely drops hurt fans impression of him. I’m good with Mckeon and Eubanks this season.
McKeon has also had his share of bad drops.
Sean “shush the home crowd” McKeon will not be a big part of the offense this year
Why did he sush the crowd? He was looking right at the student section when he did it.
Agree, McKeon is showing why he was a mediocre recruit
Touché
And fumbles vs MSU and USC.
Eubanks needs to play way more than he does.
Eubanks needs to be healthy. He showed more skills than McKeon, but mentions of him last year, and his own interviews, indicate he’s in a constant battle with injuries.
McKeon drives me crazy. So often a play doesn’t work and I think, “one of Black/Collins/DPJ wasn’t on the field for THAT!?”
I wouldn't be surprised if Muhammad takes time away from McKeon or passes him.
I’m hoping Gatis truly utilizes the personal. Eubanks is a stud.
He hasn't shown much either, especially blocking. None of them have. Asiasi was the best.
Gentry is huge and that’s not bad for a guy that big. He is not a skill player. In fact, a TE is a actually another OL who is asked to run a few routes. What did Gronk mostly do for the Patriots this year? He blocked. If you know anything about the game by playing it or coaching it then you understand that. Gentry was considered as an impact player at Michigan and this shows you how Michigan’s players are no where near the impact players that you see at OSU, Clemson, Alabama, Oklahoma etc. The truth hurts but Michigan is just really an average program until Harbaugh maintains a consistent staff and consistently attracts players like Meyer did and Day will continue to do
But Gentry can t block.
Then he won’t play much or for long in the NFL. Who cares what the TV people say about what a TE does now in the NFL. It’s a TE which is an extra OL who can run a route. Gronk lined up wide sometimes but blocked 98% of the time. Let all the experts tell Belicheck what a TE should be doing. He only won his 7th super bowl. What would he know?
Actually in today’s NFL, TE’s are more WR than OL. Guys like Kittle, Kelce, and Engram split out more than they line up in the box.
Was watching the combine and I forget which analyst said it, but that was his exact point. He was even referring to them as WRs. They are all mostly big and slow WRs that are asked to get in the way of blockers. If you can find one that can actually block, that's both rare and a huge plus.
Kittle makes as much of his impact tight as a blocker.
Thanks for reminding us what a TE does again. We'd all forgotten.
