Thanks for the link TOB. Sounding like the NCAA definitely has other plans for the Trojans. What would be really nice is if it came out before signing day. But if any of these kids are following this as close as they should be, with their futures on the line, then I would say their 2010 class could come up short a bit.

Hopefully Michigan isn't penalized for it's practice time limits before NSD and if we are it's just a secondary violation.

Uh oh. Things about to get interesting in the next few weeks for the men of Troy. Could USC get hit with the dreaded "lack of institutional control"? Regardless, USC's fall should lead to short term recuriting benefits for UM, UCLA, and ND.

I'm guessing they will be stripped of every win that occurred while those players were there, and they will lose something like 5 scholarships for 5-10 years, with a BCS ban of the same length.

I don't know if the Heismans could be stripped, they aren't awarded by the NCAA so the NCAA does not have any control over those. While I don't know the requirement for a Heisman to be revoked, I'd imagine that it would require a pretty large vote from the Heisman people.
I guess that could happen though, what with all the OUTRAGE that's has NEWSPAPER people fired UP.

I'm willing to bet they'll be required to completely dismantle their football program and facilities for a period of time no less than 10 years and no more than 20 years, Carroll will have a fine levied somewhere in the neighborhood of $5 million and any player found benefitting from the shenanigans that went on there will promptly be fired and barred from any play in the NFL or future play in the NFL...or not.

The NCAA awards neither the Heisman nor the BCS Championship (nor any of the old AP/UPI/ESPN-USA Today championships). The NCAA cannot take any of that away. Being relatively new, there is no precedence for taking away a BCS championship. And I don't believe any team ever had a poll championship taken away either.

No. At least, I doubt it. You generally have to already be under sanctions for something to get the death penalty.

You're joking, right? SMU maintained a slush fund for payments to players for more than a decade. They paid players to sign with them and paid them to play. This continued even after the NCAA put them on probation.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but at USC in football we're talking about a single player, and we're talking about wannabe agents, not boosters or the football program itself (as in the case of SMU). That simply can't be equated with SMU. The question of "institutional control" only comes up because something similar happened in the basketball program, again with a single, high-profile, player. I don't know what the judgment will be, but the idea that there is any similarity to SMU is just wrong.

The 1/1/2004 game that Bush played in. I'd say it's possible if the NCAA decides that people at the university knew what Bush was doing and chose to turn a blind eye.
McKnight didn't come to USC until 2007, after the 1/1/2007 game. Also, the McKnight thing is a possible (but unlikely) recruiting violation, so even if true I doubt any victories would be stripped for something like that.

Do we get a victory? That seems kind of tacky, like it not the USC players out played ours. It wasn't exactly like USC stuffed Peyton Manning into a jersey and snuck him out onto the field. Their 18-22 year olds beat ours.
It seems like it would be better just to remove the game as a loss for us and a win for USC, but not give us the win.

While I'd like to gloat at USC's unraveling, I also acknowledge that virtually all major programs have some form of this behavior going on, just that USC flaunted the system for so long that it was hard to ignore. Sure, it is nice to see a cocky Carroll and the rest of the USC faithful experience some well-deserved comeuppance, but but this point, I just want UM to get back to where they were invited to Pasadena.

the only problem, he was using a corked bat. USC'S Basketball Program is doing no better at this time. The NCAA has turned down USC's self imposed sanctions for the basketball team(thnx Mr. Mayo). While the process has been slow- like trying to peel a water melon, it appears the NCAA is ready to carve that melon with USC's own Trojan Sword. I say let the picnic begin, water melon anyone? Reggie you may have the first slice-you've earned it.

For clarification, can anyone explain the process here? I was under the assumption that the sanction process does not include a step where the school under investigation is allowed to go to the NCAA and say "if we do this right now, will that be enough?"
For example, isn't that what's happening with the basketball program? USC removes itself from the tourney and takes away scholarships for a year, but the investigation is still ongoing. The NCAA will later decide whether the pre-existing sanction was enough, or additional punishment should be meted out. At least, isn't that what happened here in the 90s?

It's true. That's not a REQUIRED step, but often times that's how it works. School submits plan to punish itself, NCAA approves it, life goes on.
In this case, the NCAA said, "You can punish yourself, but it won't stop our process at all."

AD has to go for sure if he's got 2 dirty programs. That's where the "lack of institutional control" starts and he should be barred from holding a position of authority at another NCAA institution. I'd like to see NCAA sue the school for the money they received from bowl games and BB Tournament if they vacate the wins.
Lastly, I'd like to see the school sue Carrol, Floyd, and the AD to recoup the money lost from vacating those wins.
I'm not a sue-happy person, but as it is right now the only ones that ever get punished by this stuff are current players who may not have even been college aged when the incidents happened.

When we had to vacate all those games in basketball, the only money we had to return was from the NCAA tournament. As the NCAA doesn't officially sanction the BCS, USC football might not have to pay back anything (though they will have to return a little chunk of money in basketball).
