Would you be in favor of alcohol sales at Michigan Stadium?

PSU just approved alcohol sales today at Beaver Stadium. It seems inevitable that Michigan will sell alcohol in the near future with the professionalization of college sports at hand. I feel like this doesn't really change a lot. Students already sneak drinks into the game so the university might as well make some money on it.

You wouldn't be around more drunks...you might be around more people who are drinking (obviously), but it slows binge drinking.

No kid is going to a stadium and getting hammered off of $10 Bud Lights.

However, plenty of kids will forgo shotgunning 3 consecutive beers just before kick if they know they can get a couple beers in the stadium.

NFL crowds are different altogether. There isn't a college stadium in the country that is as bad as most NFL stadiums.

I've been all over the B1G, SEC, ACC, I've been to WVU where they get crazy drunk. I've been to UCF where these idiots drink like crazy and pass out in an aluminum bowl under direct sunlight.

Nothing compares to half the NFL stadiums I've been to.

That's my gut reaction too, as my local NFL stadium is a drunken shitshow every fall Sunday but I also wonder if the environment would be different at colleges. To try to say it delicately, I find that the demographic make ups of Michigan games differ quite a bit from my NFL team. Little more 'blue collar', little more 'guys who drink cases of natty light after work every day' at the NFL games. There are a ton of alcoholics and closet alcoholics at those games

To each their own, but I would vote no sales at the stadium. (Full disclosure, I do drink beer and have an occasional shot of vodka or a mixed manly fruity drink.) Sorry to be a stick in the mud.

I would think the university automatically becomes liable for everyone in the stadium, including those who don't drink, (Yes there are people who don't drink.) even if they did not buy beer at the stadium.

I think the university banned people from bringing beer/alcohol into the stadium 25 - 30 years ago, and survived. Even though the university would be selling the beer, public perception and laws have changed from the last time beer/alcohol were allowed in the stadium. (I know, technically, you would not be allowed to BYOB.)

Walking up and down the stairs, let alone up the seats at the end of the game, and the concourse, could be a challenge.

The stadium medical staff and room, and security/police would be over worked.

Driving home may become more difficult/slower for everyone. (Being drunk or sleepy while driving.) You may say sleep it off, but you know that won't happen.

Driving will be worse after night games or when the weather is snowing/sleeting.

It would probably increase revenue several hundred thousand each game. Some of that will need to be spent on removing belligerents from the stadium. I assume the appropriate staff will be added and all will be fine for the the families who attend. So, yeah, okay, I guess...

A survey was sent put to all of the season ticket holders during the off season asking their feelings about selling booze in the stadium. Per the director of premium seating at the stadium when a suite holder asked her about it, the results were a 50/50 split... don't know what that means in the long run...

But as some one who works there I think it would be a horrible idea... the last soccer game that sold booze in 2019 was a complete shit show by the end of the game.

The Big Ten Championship sold alcohol and it was completely fine. The costs will prohibit the younger crowd, and they all pre-drink and sneak stuff in anyway.

No. This is what tailgates are for. Give people 4 hours to sober up prior to the drive or maybe even have a non stuporous night to study. Drinking at a game is going to stickify the cushions...low ROI.

I’m against it. There’s plenty of pre-game drinking. It’s good to sober up a little during the game. That being said, I used to bring a cooler of beer into the game back in the 70’s.

Season ticket holder in 1981, and we always got a bottle of something at the party store that was on Main just north of Stadium. Don't remember the store name, but the income from a football Saturday could have probably paid a semester's tuition.

Most people were OK, although there were always drunken assholes. (They were usually assholes when they were cold sober too, I'm guessing.) The only negative memory of stadium drinking I have is the pretty little blonde who had one sloe gin too many and barfed on my foot. The pink stains never came out of my Nikes.

I'd prefer not.

But I'm admittedly an "off my lawn" guy. I'd prefer minimal piped in music etc. Pregame like hell. Sneak some in if you are wily enough.

I've been to a Penn State game. They need alcohol in that trash bin.

Not that this is the choice here, but I'd much rather they start selling alcohol than that they allow advertising. We are a much bigger outlier when it comes to the advertising thing, but I really appreciate it. If it means holding off the ads for another few years, I'm all for it.

Did you see that AD survey a year or two ago literally making every question a choice between X and advertising in the stadium?

I don’t recall if it mentioned selling alcohol but it was basically like, “would you rather get worse recruits due to a smaller recruiting budget or sell advertising in the stadium?”

so you ain’t far off at all.

I do remember that--it has been on my mind since then. I feel like the stuff like the 100-yard dash, with the winner getting a MEIJER gift card, is a way for them to sneak in a bit of advertising, for instance (though I don't have a problem with that--it's the barrage of visual ads on every available square inch like they have at Spartan Stadium that I'd like to avoid).

I don’t drink when there’s a Michigan game. Not to say I’ve never had a glass of bourbon or so before hand but in all my life I’ve probably only consumed alcohol a dozen times or so in connection with a Michigan game.

So I’m not interested in the stadium selling booze and I’m worried about the drunk drivers.

But as so many have said, it’s coming. So I guess I’ll just have to deal with it.

Well, when I was a student, I was much more in favor of it being free.  It will be so expensive that I don’t think it will have a huge impact on drinking within the student section, imho.
