Would you be in favor of alcohol sales at Michigan Stadium?

PSU just approved alcohol sales today at Beaver Stadium. It seems inevitable that Michigan will sell alcohol in the near future with the professionalization of college sports at hand. I feel like this doesn't really change a lot. Students already sneak drinks into the game so the university might as well make some money on it.

If it happens it won't be $5 for a 12 oz.  It'll be more like $10 to $15 to restrain binge drinking.  Prices will probably drive away like 80% of the interested crowd after they've spent a couple hundred on tickets.  The revenues from stadium alcohol sales won't amount to much profit, IMO.

Yes. It would generally allow for safer drinking amongst the legal aged. Usually people are putting down unhealthy amounts of drinks (me included sometimes) because people want to “keep their buzz” all game so they often consume too much. Knowing that they can buy beers at the stadium, folks might go lighter on the liquor before the game. High brow Michigan fans will argue some bullshit about “not wanting an NFL experience” not realizing withholding alcohol will actually cause people to consume too much before the game in anticipation.

Ultimately, it isn't my decision, and my opinion doesn't matter to those who make the decision. However, I think these decisions get made on the basis of revenue. Think about it:

  • Ticket prices: revenue
  • Merch: revenue
  • TV rights: revenue
  • Parking: revenue
  • Concessions: revenue
  • Luxury boxes:  revenue

For that reason, I think eventually, they will sell alcohol, they will sell marijuana, and they will find some way to sell advertising at the stadium. In this world, it is almost always about the money.

I remember games in the late 70's where the blue haze of marijuana smoke hung in the air over the student sections. I'd bet someone wants to monetize that.

People are going to do what they're going to do, and you have to treat people like adults:  they are free to make decisions for themselves.

My only desire is that decisions of others not cause the games to become so miserable it just isn't worth it anymore. The interminable delays because of TV timeouts, the prohibitions on bringing any food or water into the stadium, belligerent and rude and violent drunks, all these things make games less and less enjoyable. At some point, I finally say, well, with an HD TV and DVR, I'll go into radio silence, start watching the game 2 hours in, skip through the undending commercials and half time, have plenty of food and drink and comfort and a restroom, and spend a lot less money and time. Obviously, I already do that anyway. But at some point, it just isn't worth EVER going to a game in person.

People lament the low numbers actually attending games in many venues. Well, there comes a point, a tipping point, where the value of attending in person just isn't there anymore. I haven't completely reached that point. But I'm closer.

Man our fanbase is lame, it’s beer people not meth. To the pompous losers  saying Michigan is above beer, the solution is simple: legal cannabis edibles at the big house!

No. I like the somewhat family friendly environment we have now. Also it’s a pain when you sit next to someone who is up and down all game for concessions and bathroom. It would increase so much during the game

Not sure "the professionalization of sports" supplies a rationale?

Not sure that "might as well make money" does, either?

I cherish the whole quite different family atmosphere that you get in Ann Arbor on a Saturday in comparison to what I have seen on other campuses. Yes, people drink when they tailgate, smuggle booze in, too. (My dad did back in the 1940s!) But as a decision-maker, I would personally never want to make decisions that would mean some greater degree of suffering over time. You'll just have that many more fights, broken legs, altercations, falls per that 115,000 people, guys being hard on partners and families after unhappy outcomes.

Now more than ever, there's something to be said for preserving some spaces as unique, quieter, freer from commercialization/crapification. Let's preserve the difference.

Yes they should. I'm a season ticket holder at a MAC university and its great being able to buy a $7 beer or two. Especially during the first few weeks of the season when it's hot as hell in the stadium

Could be ok if you limit it to just beer and wine.  You could also limit individual consumption further by giving people wristbands, and every time you buy a drink you get a mark on the wristband.

I don’t see what’s wrong with letting people have a couple of beers at the game.  The bigger issue is kids who go too wild ripping shots and whatnot before the game

Not only would I be in favor of alcohol sales but I would also be in favor of cannabis sales as well. Might as well let the university make as much money as possible to throw at NIL. I’m not a smoker but I do like the smell of it and I will partake in the occasional gummy so I think that would be a cool experience that would be the Michigan difference. Just keep loading up the NIL cannon. I understand the cons and that it would probably never happen because little kids are at the stadium and that’s just not a good look but I’m just saying it wouldn’t bother me one bit if they sold alcohol and cannabis. I just remember that alcohol was not enough for me to swallow the App. St. loss when I was in attendance and had tailgated before the game and had brought my flask into the stadium with me. I could have used a few gummy’s or several blunts during that disaster. I would have liked to completely erase that experience from my mind that day.

If they did sell it I may buy one every so often but really I think it shouldn't be if for anything else what another poster said - give those attending a good four hours to sober up so there aren't as many people driving over the limit after the game.

yes yes and yes. charging $9 for a 16oz can of blue moon is a cash cow. and if u limit each person to 2 cans per trip only a few light weights are going to get too tipsy. it is likely few will be willing to stand in long lines more than once for 2 cans of beer as well...further limiting chances of over doing it.

My vote would be no.  The problematic power drinkers are going to find a way regardless but it will make lines for concessions and bathrooms even worse and create more in and out, up and down foot traffic during the game that distracts from the experience.
