WMU rumored to be interested in Jay Harbaugh
December 5th, 2022 at 9:42 AM ^
Wouldn't Mike Hart still coach RBs if he became the co-OC? When Moore leaves, we'll need an OL coach.
December 5th, 2022 at 9:51 AM ^
Newsome to OL. Total hawt take but I see him as rising star.
December 5th, 2022 at 7:52 AM ^
There’s the family connection there, with Jack’s tenure as HC in the 80s.
And that’s it. I’ve long been a Jay defender/pro-Jay guy. But it seems a bit early for this kind of bump for him, to me. He’s still just doing position-coach work.
Not that I couldn’t see him going somewhere else. He could easily go somewhere to be an OC; I even think he might be next in line to be OL coach or even co-OC here if/when guys move on. But HC at 33 would be a big jump.
More power to him if there were really interest, though. But a classic rock DJ is not exactly going to get me too worried just yet.
December 5th, 2022 at 8:08 AM ^
He's been special teams coordinator of the best special teams in college football for a couple of years now. Why do you take that away from him by saying "he's still just doing position coach work"? ST Coord doesn't get the attention or glamor that the OC and DC gets, but he has six distinct units to oversee - punt, punt return, FG, FG defense, kickoff, kickoff return, along with all the position groups and different players between them.
I say that, but I don't believe for a minute that you meant to diss him. It just read that way to me.
Now, I totally agree with you that he's too young/inexperienced to be a G5 head coach. I think he needs to get more exposed to the offense as a coordinator somewhere. You can build a team around an offense or a defense, but you cannot build a team around ST (and yeah, I know Iowa has done a fine job of doing just that).
Nonetheless, if he is picked for that position, then WMU will have satisfied all the questions they have about him. And I'll wish him all the luck in the world and cheer for WMU.

Perhaps it should ... ask Brian Kelly about special teams, particularly his field goal team that trotted off the field after a blocked field goal, even though the ball was still live. Georgia ran it back for a touchdown. They had a shot of Kelly's face after that, and I have to imagine there was going to be a discussion with his ST coach.
December 5th, 2022 at 8:31 AM ^
In fairness to Kelly, Georgia players didn’t know what to do either. One and only one Georgia player slowly reached to grab the ball, hesitated to look for guidance from his sideline then picked it up and ran it back for a TD. How could special teams players not know the rules?! I couldn’t imagine that happening on UM special teams.
December 5th, 2022 at 8:47 AM ^
The tin-foil-hat part of me wants to think that the Georgia defenders only made it look like they didn't know what was going on, so the LSU players would think it was a dead ball. :-)
The group of us watching the game on TV weren't sure either, but we're not paid to prepare for such things. To be honest, I'm not really sure what exactly made that ball still live ... was it that it was never touched by an LSU player?
December 5th, 2022 at 9:05 AM ^
All kicks are plays - the ball is live until someone downs it, gets tackled, it goes out of bounds, or through the uprights for a FG. I think everyone thought the whistle blew, because it's usually a pretty quick whistle on those.
December 5th, 2022 at 11:39 AM ^
Did you see the shot of the Georgia coach in the booth yelling “no no no no no YES!!!” into his mic? Between that and the way the Georgia player stood over the ball until juuuuuust before it stopped wobbling, I think they had this set up.
December 5th, 2022 at 12:44 PM ^
100% it was set up.
And it was delicious to watch.
December 5th, 2022 at 8:31 AM ^
John Harbaugh was never an offensive or defensive coordinator. Biff Poggi has less experience at the college level the Jay Harbaugh does. Jim himself had less coaching experience than Jay has when he took over at University of San Diego.
Jay Harbaugh has coached 3 different position groups, has coordinated special teams and is well viewed as an excellent recruiter. He would need to hire good coordinators on both sides of the ball, but there is no reason to believe that he could not succeed as a head coach.
December 5th, 2022 at 10:59 AM ^
I think it’s weird we keep mentioning that Jay is too young to be a college HC when the he’s only 3 years younger than the guy who won the last Super Bowl and 3 years older than that guy was when he was hired to coach an NFL franchise.
December 5th, 2022 at 8:23 AM ^
It would seem sort of a stunt hire at this point because of his granddad having been HC at Western from 1982-1986.
If his aim is to become a major college HC, then his next step is to take on a coordinator role or some other role with more responsibility.
December 5th, 2022 at 8:35 AM ^
As far as HC at 33 being too early, Sean McVay would like a word with you.
December 5th, 2022 at 8:47 AM ^
Fair point.

+1 for reminding me of this

It’s Western, you have to find the guy that’s a couple years early or the coach looking for redemption. PJ Fleck had a pretty thin resume before he was hired. Not only was Jack HC but John has got to be their most famous football alumn.
December 5th, 2022 at 8:55 AM ^
His uncle was ST coach of the Eagles before becoming HC of the Ravens.
December 5th, 2022 at 12:12 PM ^
Jay's too short to be a head coach.
December 5th, 2022 at 7:57 AM ^
What do Lite Rock Mix and Today's Hottest Country have to say about it?
December 5th, 2022 at 8:40 AM ^
Still more reliable than Valenti.
December 5th, 2022 at 9:34 AM ^
Certainly easier to listen to and digest.
December 5th, 2022 at 8:00 AM ^
Might not be now, but this is inevitable. Much rather have great coaches who are in demand than crummy ones who aren’t.
December 5th, 2022 at 8:03 AM ^
Jay deserves a shot. The man has proved he can evaluate talent and coach.
December 5th, 2022 at 8:04 AM ^
So Jim Harbaugh's plan (or maybe it was Jack's) is becoming clear. Have a ton of kids and take over football at every level.
December 5th, 2022 at 8:08 AM ^
Sadly for Iowa fans this is also the Ferentz plan
December 5th, 2022 at 8:34 AM ^
The key difference is that the Harbaugh plan actually focuses on succeeding at every level, not just getting the job
December 5th, 2022 at 9:25 AM ^
MOAR BAUGH
December 5th, 2022 at 8:06 AM ^
Makes sense. I wouldn't be surprised at all if there are some coaches poached off the staff this year, given the overall success and how much of it seems to be related to motivation and preparation.
I think it most likely that Jay sticks around here and takes on a coordinator role, while one of the other guys takes a HC job somewhere.
December 5th, 2022 at 8:11 AM ^
As long as we’re talking coaching moves, Sam Webb just reported that Cinci has hired the OC from Louisville for head coach, which might make people breathe a bit easier about losing Minter.
*Edit: As others have pointed out, the guy Cinci hired was Louisville HC Satterfield. That’s why Sam also pointed out that Sherrone has previous coaching experience at Louisville as a GA. One door closes, another one opens…
December 5th, 2022 at 8:17 AM ^
This is great news!
December 5th, 2022 at 8:20 AM ^
That sound you heard was the collective exhale of the Michigan fan base.
1st edit... But I can't find any news on this from a quick google search.... inhale air again and hold!
2nd edit... looks to be true on Twitter, so it must be true. Exhaling again.
December 5th, 2022 at 8:20 AM ^
Lance Taylor? Pretty surprising, he was only OC for one year and Louisville had the #65 offense in SP+. Thought they could get someone more accomplished but guessing he's a hot prospect as a recruiter
December 5th, 2022 at 8:22 AM ^
NVM, looks like they hired Satterfield (former Louisville head coach, not OC)
Also kinda surprising, in a different way, that they went with "Hot Seaterfield"
December 5th, 2022 at 8:24 AM ^
It’s apparently Louisville HC Scott Satterfield.
University yet to confirm.
December 5th, 2022 at 8:17 AM ^
Jaybaugh has done a great job at each responsibility he's had... He will have opportunities, no doubt. I'm much more concerned with Minter leaving for Cinci... and recent reports are they're down to two candidates, Linquist from Buffalo and Lewis from Kent State.
December 5th, 2022 at 8:18 AM ^
They hired Satterfield
December 5th, 2022 at 8:43 AM ^
Need to give Minter a raise....so that he stays at least one more year. I think schools will also start taking shots at Moore so I hope he stays put, too. Need some stabiity on our coaching staff to keep the momentum going and help our recruiting..
December 5th, 2022 at 8:43 AM ^
Oops DP
December 5th, 2022 at 10:12 AM ^
Well, you know what you can do with your "recent reports." (The same as can be done with most "reports. ")
December 5th, 2022 at 8:33 AM ^
MAC coaching jobs tend to be stepping stones. It’s very hard to recruit for the MAC so that you can win without a few down years, which are enough to get you fired. I am sure that WMU is trying to repeat the PJ Fleck magic, give a young highly regarded assistant their first HC job, and at a D1 school. Does the AD have the competence to evaluate well enough? When you are hiring someone without HC experience some luck is needed.
I am sure Jay would do fine, but Moore has more experience, and look at Michigan’s OL the last two years. In my non-expert view, he would be my first pick. He may get better offers.
December 5th, 2022 at 8:40 AM ^
It will seem more reasonable he will get a Coordinator Job first, but what do I know...
December 5th, 2022 at 10:21 AM ^
December 5th, 2022 at 8:41 AM ^
the so-called "report" is obviously 100% shinola.
that said, special teams coaches often turn out to be excellent head coaches, for lots of reasons...general organization skills, obviously, but also because you have to sorta be able to plug in guys that might otherwise be limited into places where they succeed.
also - just off the dome, i can recall that marv levy, john harbaugh, and bill belichick all cut their teeth as special teams coaches. i seem to recall ditka starting out that way, too? maybe?
December 5th, 2022 at 8:48 AM ^
Was it WRKR? Is that thing still around?
Hopefully he would have more success than gramps (25–27–3).
Jack was one of the "new coaches, new approaches [Ed.: same results]" AD house cleaning Western did in FB, MBB and hockey before the 1982 seasons. At least the FB tickets had Wendy's coupons on the back. so they weren't completely worthless.
December 5th, 2022 at 8:50 AM ^
Tony Paul of the Detroit News first floated Jay's name as a possible replacement for Tim Lester at WMU in this tweet on 11/28. I haven't seen any confirmation that they've had a conversation with him, but it wouldn't be a surprise. https://twitter.com/TonyPaul1984/status/1597354917165142016
December 5th, 2022 at 8:59 AM ^
Michigan can pay him more than WMU can. He should be the OC or DC in waiting depending on which we lose first.
December 5th, 2022 at 9:46 AM ^
Sure, Michigan could pay him more, but if he wants to be a head coach, WMU can offer him that and Michigan can’t. Some things money just can’t offer you.
He may think he’s ready to run his own program. Michigan needs to prepare for that very realistic possibility, whether it’s now or in the future. I doubt he wants to keep working for his dad for the rest of his career.
December 5th, 2022 at 10:23 AM ^
He's paid $650,000 at Michigan. Rumor is the donors are willing to make the WMU job around $1 mil.
December 5th, 2022 at 9:01 AM ^
Tony Paul tweeted about it a week or so ago, thought it was posted already...
