WMU rumored to be interested in Jay Harbaugh

Local classic rock station just said WMU fired their head football coach and is looking at Jay Harbaugh as their next head coach.

Can't vouch for the accuracy of classic rock stations reporting on sports rumors.

There’s the family connection there, with Jack’s tenure as HC in the 80s.

And that’s it. I’ve long been a Jay defender/pro-Jay guy. But it seems a bit early for this kind of bump for him, to me. He’s still just doing position-coach work.

Not that I couldn’t see him going somewhere else. He could easily go somewhere to be an OC; I even think he might be next in line to be OL coach or even co-OC here if/when guys move on. But HC at 33 would be a big jump.

More power to him if there were really interest, though. But a classic rock DJ is not exactly going to get me too worried just yet.

He's been special teams coordinator of the best special teams in college football for a couple of years now.  Why do you take that away from him by saying "he's still just doing position coach work"?  ST Coord doesn't get the attention or glamor that the OC and DC gets, but he has six distinct units to oversee - punt, punt return, FG, FG defense, kickoff, kickoff return, along with all the position groups and different players between them.

I say that, but I don't believe for a minute that you meant to diss him.  It just read that way to me.

Now, I totally agree with you that he's too young/inexperienced to be a G5 head coach.  I think he needs to get more exposed to the offense as a coordinator somewhere.  You can build a team around an offense or a defense, but you cannot build a team around ST (and yeah, I know Iowa has done a fine job of doing just that).

Nonetheless, if he is picked for that position, then WMU will have satisfied all the questions they have about him.  And I'll wish him all the luck in the world and cheer for WMU.

Perhaps it should ... ask Brian Kelly about special teams, particularly his field goal team that trotted off the field after a blocked field goal, even though the ball was still live.  Georgia ran it back for a touchdown.  They had a shot of Kelly's face after that, and I have to imagine there was going to be a discussion with his ST coach.

In fairness to Kelly, Georgia players didn’t know what to do either. One and only one Georgia player slowly reached to grab the ball, hesitated to look for guidance from his sideline then picked it up and ran it back for a TD. How could special teams players not know the rules?! I couldn’t imagine that happening on UM special teams.

The tin-foil-hat part of me wants to think that the Georgia defenders only made it look like they didn't know what was going on, so the LSU players would think it was a dead ball.  :-)

The group of us watching the game on TV weren't sure either, but we're not paid to prepare for such things.  To be honest, I'm not really sure what exactly made that ball still live ... was it that it was never touched by an LSU player?

John Harbaugh was never an offensive or defensive coordinator.   Biff Poggi has less experience at the college level the Jay Harbaugh does.  Jim himself had less coaching experience than Jay has when he took over at University of San Diego.

Jay Harbaugh has coached 3 different position groups, has coordinated special teams and is well viewed as an excellent recruiter.   He would need to hire good coordinators on both sides of the ball, but there is no reason to believe that he could not succeed as a head coach.

Makes sense.  I wouldn't be surprised at all if there are some coaches poached off the staff this year, given the overall success and how much of it seems to be related to motivation and preparation.

I think it most likely that Jay sticks around here and takes on a coordinator role, while one of the other guys takes a HC job somewhere.

As long as we’re talking coaching moves, Sam Webb just reported that Cinci has hired the OC from Louisville for head coach, which might make people breathe a bit easier about losing Minter.

*Edit: As others have pointed out, the guy Cinci hired was Louisville HC Satterfield. That’s why Sam also pointed out that Sherrone has previous coaching experience at Louisville as a GA. One door closes, another one opens…

Jaybaugh has done a great job at each responsibility he's had... He will have opportunities, no doubt.  I'm much more concerned with Minter leaving for Cinci... and recent reports are they're down to two candidates, Linquist from Buffalo and Lewis from Kent State.

MAC coaching jobs tend to be stepping stones. It’s very hard to recruit for the MAC so that you can win without a few down years, which are enough to get you fired. I am sure that WMU is trying to repeat the PJ Fleck magic, give a young highly regarded assistant their first HC job, and at a D1 school. Does the AD have the competence to evaluate well enough? When you are hiring someone without HC experience some luck is needed.

I am sure Jay would do fine, but Moore has more experience, and look at Michigan’s OL the last two years. In my non-expert view, he would be my first pick. He may get better offers.

the so-called "report" is obviously 100% shinola.

that said, special teams coaches often turn out to be excellent head coaches, for lots of reasons...general organization skills, obviously, but also because you have to sorta be able to plug in guys that might otherwise be limited into places where they succeed.

also - just off the dome, i can recall that marv levy, john harbaugh, and bill belichick all cut their teeth as special teams coaches.  i seem to recall ditka starting out that way, too?  maybe?

Was it WRKR? Is that thing still around?

Hopefully he would have more success than gramps (25–27–3).

Jack was one of the "new coaches, new approaches [Ed.: same results]" AD house cleaning Western did in FB, MBB and hockey before the 1982 seasons. At least the FB tickets had Wendy's coupons on the back. so they weren't completely worthless.

Sure, Michigan could pay him more, but if he wants to be a head coach, WMU can offer him that and Michigan can’t. Some things money just can’t offer you.

He may think he’s ready to run his own program. Michigan needs to prepare for that very realistic possibility, whether it’s now or in the future. I doubt he wants to keep working for his dad for the rest of his career.
