Which Michigan QB from the past would be the best fit for our current offense?

Steve Smith
November 17th, 2010 at 8:44 PM ^
I almost forgot about him. He'd be good.
November 18th, 2010 at 8:54 AM ^
Wrong Steve. The correct answer is Steve Breaston.
November 17th, 2010 at 8:24 PM ^
Sheridan. That dude was hard edge.
November 18th, 2010 at 9:56 AM ^
So you've cracked his secret identity...
November 17th, 2010 at 8:25 PM ^
Great runner and passer ...
that being said, I'd reather have Denard running this offense than anyone from the past

The Coner
November 17th, 2010 at 8:25 PM ^
Drew Henson...he had the wheels and could throw on the run, not to mention the cannon arm...still pisses me off that he got seduced by the Yankees..

Denard from September 2012

John Navarre, the OG 16
November 17th, 2010 at 8:33 PM ^
Indeed. More mobile than a cheetah in rollerblades. He practically scorched the defense on the transcontinental.

he also had the longest TD in human history (timewise) against Minny when he caught the pass. our entire OL was blocking ahead of him along the sideline.

Steven Threet and Ryan Mallett would like to have a word with you. Put those three in a foot race with Navarre... who wins?

made me laugh out load
I'm afraid to ask.

Look at them SPREAD the field with such finesse at 10:03

Thanks for the youtube highlights. I had forgotten that the double reverse and throw back were part of the old Bo-Mo-Carr playbook. I think the first time it was run at Michigan however was back when Florida State came up north and played Michigan here years ago. They ran the play against Michigan (QB -> WR (lateral) -> back to QB up field) and almost scored.
Having seen all of the QBs since Franklin play at the Big House, I'd have to give Dennis Franklin a slight edge over Steve Smith or Michael Taylor if they were to run the spread like the 2010 team. All three could throw on the run well but Franklin was a bit more accurate. Smith had the pure speed but Denard Robinson's acceleration and quick cuts are unmatched.
Pure NFL drop back QBs - for college years, Henne is also a slight edge better. WIth the aid of Captain Hindsight, Tom Brady clearly could play but at the time he wasn't quite yet THE Tom Brady. After watching the recent Pats Pittsburgh game his throws were amazing, and so much quicker than when he was at the UM.

Rick Leach and Steve Smith would both be good.
WIth that said, i would have liked to see Antonio Baas in this offense as a qb. He probably would have been in 08 too if it wasn't for the injury....
November 17th, 2010 at 9:24 PM ^
It was interesting, I heard Brandstatter on Huge back in September when Denard was just destroying defenses. He said that Smith was the fastest straight line running quarterback he ever saw and Denard had the quickest acceleration to full speed from a cut or standing position.
I remember Smith, but didn't remember him being that fast.
November 17th, 2010 at 11:02 PM ^
Its weird to think about. I have heard the same, that his straight line speed is faster than denard. However, all this is recollections and memories. I have a VERY hard time believing smith had better straight line speed than Denard.....

I second Brady. They basically run a spread offense in New England. They spread the field out and use the short passing game to make up for the somewhat lacking run game. Brady + Slot Ninjas = Win.

Bass.

clicked through so I could post this.

Sigh, me too. Antonio Bass will always be THE mgoblog meme.

I had some high hopes for that kid.
November 18th, 2010 at 12:57 AM ^
Anyone that saw that guy play in high school had high hopes for him. He would thrive in the current offense. Didn't fit in Carr's system. Except at receiver.
November 18th, 2010 at 8:35 AM ^
in fact, the offense they sort of created on the rare instances he played was based on getting him out in space. He also retruned some kicks, I believe........and not many actual QBs at Michigan can say that.
November 17th, 2010 at 8:42 PM ^
Jermaine Gonzales would have owned.
edit: OMG and I think at the same time.
November 17th, 2010 at 8:40 PM ^
Steve Breaston? Saw him play in the PA state championship as QB. I wonder with a little development inder RR if he would have been a Denard caliber QB in the Spread. He was slowed down a bit in the rain that night and he might have even fumbled once, so scratch that, he would have killed the team as QB.
Bonus: His high school team: Woodland Hills Wolverines. Black/Carolina blue
November 17th, 2010 at 8:43 PM ^
Stevie B would have done some serious damage. Plus his Hard Edge has tremendous upside.
November 17th, 2010 at 8:43 PM ^
knew how to hold and throw the rope.

Scott Dreisbach or D. Brown
November 17th, 2010 at 9:05 PM ^
for the scott dreisbach reference...
November 18th, 2010 at 3:41 AM ^
Dude could move AND had a gun. Best slinger we've had imo, though Tate might rival him. Ofc Griese had that one play where he rolled out and chucked it to Riemersma in the flat, but Dreisbach was the master of the throw on the run. Mind you the 80s QBs (Leach, Smith) were before my time, so I'm basing this on Grbac-now.
It seems like a lot of people in this thread think that QBs in our offense only have to run the ball. Yes, I know Breaston, Bass etc played QB in HS, but Breaston made Roundtree look buff in comparison his first three seasons or so and Bass... Well, unfortunately we'll never know what he could've done, so it's all in our dreams :(
Henson could've been a decent fit, too, he could move. I would've loved to see what Coach Rod would've done with the offense with him at the reigns.
November 17th, 2010 at 8:42 PM ^
Tailback/halfback in the Single Wing was equivalent to today's quarterback in the shotgun. He would seriously rock in this offense. It would also be very familiar to him.
November 17th, 2010 at 9:17 PM ^
Definitely has to be Harmon. The man can throw - the only video I found highlighting this on youtube is really annoying but here it is anyway:
November 17th, 2010 at 9:34 PM ^
The offense does look rather familiar.
November 17th, 2010 at 8:43 PM ^
Dennis Franklin
November 18th, 2010 at 1:04 AM ^
Dennis Franklin would have killed teams running this offense. The UM teams in the early 70s when he was QB were already loaded enough, and given his mobility, they would have been almost unstoppable.
November 18th, 2010 at 2:11 AM ^
Broke his collarbone in '73 against tOSU when both teams were undefeated; Michigan tied, and Sparty's AD cast the deciding vote to send tOSU to the Rose Bowl. Heard this story 1000 times from my pop.
In RR's offense, he maybe wins a Heisman.
November 17th, 2010 at 8:44 PM ^
Jimmy H ran a little option and wasn't afraid to tuck it and run.
November 17th, 2010 at 8:45 PM ^
Why the hell did he leave???
In all seriousness...I'd have to say Henson as well. But that's by default because I'm too young to remember anyone before Grbac. I think this post is a thinly veiled attempt to discover the MGoGeezers.

Charles Woodson. Pure athlete. Would tear it up.
