Leadership in spades. The way he has handled all of the accolades given to JJ is remarkable - particularly early in the season when it looked like he could have his dream job stolen from him. I loved the shot on the Fox broadcast when JJ made a big play and he looked over to Cade, who looked JJ directly in the eye and gave him a very affirming nod and point.  Cade is a gifted and special leader.

I’ll eat crow on Cade and the interesting way Harbaugh went about approaching offense this season.

Everyone and their mother thought a dynamic passing spread was the way of the future and the only way to compete against the upper echelon schools like OSU. Even Saban went towards that route with Tua n co.

Emphasizing the run with efficient passing sprinkled in did not seem like a winning recipe in 2021. Add in the ups and downs of the defense and yep… crazy.

I don't think it was a big thing, but compare the mood today to the mood 2-3 months ago, when Charbonnet was blowing up at UCLA, Xavier Worthy was blowing up at Texas, and Ronnie Bell went down.  Pretty amazing we made it to the summit.

Even as recent as the MSU game, this felt like a "What If..." season.

Maybe we are now seeing that Charbonnet was among a limited amount of people that may have realized just how good Hassan Haskins could be.   And didn't want to sit behind him.  I thought losing Charbonnet was going to hurt worse than it did.   Nope, true next man up.    And what's fun about looking to 2022 is that Corum and Edwards are standing there ready to go.   Plus others.

My buddy is a season ticket holder, I usually go to games with him. He was fed up with Harbaugh and sure you couldn’t beat tOSU with Cade or HH.

I always argued from positivity. But I have admit, and take my portion of crow, I wasn’t sure if a game manager would be enough. Glad to have the crow

I disagree with your implication that Cade was a "game manager" and that was enough. Haskins was clearly the hero, but McNamara was better than just a game manager. He made big plays, including the long throw to Johnson and the flea flicker to Sanristil. Also, he dealt with the pressure much better than Stroud. It wasn't just avoid mistakes and let your run game/defense win the game. He did his part, and I don't think the connotation of game manager gives him enough credit.

I see WAY too many of these sort of posts on other social media and it always infuriates me. I feel like now is a time to take joy and pride in what this team has accomplished, and not put a mirror in the face of those who have the bravery to say something unpopular because they want the team to win. We're all armchair quarterbacks, no need to be a dick to someone who made a judgement call and happen to be wrong. Lets just celebrate together, look forward to this Saturday and beyond.

Just my two cents.

Agree and disagree.

If you were just like “I’m not sure we can do it with Cade instead of JJ” that’s one thing.  No one bats 1.000, and people can respectfully disagree about things.

But there has been a faction of posters that has been relentlessly pounding home their opinion over and over and over, accusing the staff of coaching malpractice for not agreeing with them - they don’t need a free pass.

Same for the ones who ridiculed other Michigan fans for being optimistic and thinking that maybe we had a chance to have a good year - what kind of fandom is that?

You said what I entered the thread to say - thank you.

Pointing a finger in a fellow fans face is something an OSU or MSU fan would do.  People are allowed a different opinion.  I will grant that several members of this blog, though, went too far with the hate.

And because we're talking about the Cade hate, Bfeeaver (or whatever the fuck you couldn't spell), come forward and eat your pile of crow.

I'm fine with not pointing fingers.  I'm also very much okay with persons who are wrong admitting it so that they can be welcomed into the fold.  Admit you underestimated the guy, get a high-five, receive a high-five, grab a beer, and let's cheer on in Indy.  Nothing wrong with some self-awareness.

The one thing that sucks is when you get that guy who will stick to their guns and say something dumb like... We'll never beat UGA with Cade.  We need to start JJ in Indy so he gets game reps.  This guy still gets to celebrate the win over OSU and anything else that comes, of course, but he's still a bit of a tool.

RE: GoWings original response.

Yeah, I get what you're saying, and I agree.

But there are always going to be people, especially online, that are going to jump at the first opportunity to say "See, I told you so!" With a different result, another group on this board would have said it. That's one of the reasons some people post takes in the first place.

You're right, though, it puts up some negativity it what is a glorious time of afterglow. Waiting a while would be better, I think.

Beat Iowa.

I think your idea is right but the anti-Cade stuff went on for weeks even as we were winning with him. It was in bad form for a fanbase to go after their own like that. I mean, he's winning and people were unhappy because he wasn't winning in a certain way. There has to a little crow put on a plate for that.

I'll bite, bring on the negs. I was very much in the fire Harbaugh after the Army game and kept banging that drum until this weekend. As much as I like Cade I didn't think he had it in him and every read that was wide open and he didn't pull confirmed it more. I have never been so happy to eat crow! In fact I'll go one step further. There is NO WAY HE CAN BEAT IOWA AND THEN WIN A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!

It was never Cade vs. JJ (they're teammates) but I will say that a lot of people who bemoaned UM not throwing McCarthy into the mix when Cade "struggled" early on have been quiet recently.

McNamara is a bigger man than me. I would have motherfucked every single internet Michigan fan after the MSU game, in which their anointed starter put the ball on the turf a couple of times and cost us dearly in the middle of my best ever performance.

But that’s why he’s quarterbacking a team with a chance to win the conference and I’m a cranky old guy who takes pleasure in “I told you so.”

I supported Harbaugh through all of this* and never said a bad word about Cade.  But the whole attacking other Michigan fans thing is unseemly and should end.   You'll always find a "Henson-crowd" who wants the backup QB or a new coach whenever there is any adversity.

Enjoy the moment.  Celebrate with all of the Michigan fans how great Cade is.

*I'm sure I waivered a little after a couple of the OSU blow outs.

Next years QB battle will be fascinating. To me, JJs talent just pops off. And I can see how much more dangerous our offense could be with him at the helm. But how do you bench the guy who has led this team to where we are? Maybe there is a way to play both again? Either way we should be in great shape.

I have no idea how you choose between the two.  JJ is uber talented, but Cade's leadership and moxie and cool as a cucumber under pressure vibes are just so damn hard to keep on the sidelines.  It was 1 thing when it appeared he maybe couldn't throw the team back into a game, but he's more than proved that if needed, he can sling the ball with the best of 'em.  I legit think we might have a 2 QB system, with the guys trading drives next year in a ramped up version of what we did this year.  Unless JJ just blows the doors off the competition somehow over the offseason.

I saw that barking to get the team lined up and that is all I needed to see.  He is THE MAN in charge.  He barks out what needs to be done and the offense follows....

PS - I have been a supporter of Cade all along, that clip just showed the national TV crowd that he was locked in for this game.....

Along with Cade, this game has me optimistic about Gattis. It seemed like it took a while for him to get his feet under him and mature as an OC, but if Saturday was an indication of things to come, I'm all aboard the Gattis train. I actually felt like we saw some speed in space with our receivers and passes to the RB's.

Donovan Edwards looks like he could be something VERY special - loved that one-handed grab out of the backfield.

That was - by an SEC mile - the fastest Michigan offense I've seen in years.  Maybe not HH, but Corum (when healthy) and Edwards can outrun the entire defense.  Outside, the OSU DB's just plain could not keep up with Michigan's WRs - the few deep balls thrown were wide open because Sainristil, CJ, and Wilson outran coverage.  Henning was blowing past people all day on his plays and returns.  OSU was not fast enough to keep up, plain and simple.

Why did they look so slow?  Because the offensive game plan from Gattis was a work of art; a thing of beauty; a fucking MASTERPEICE.

By far the best offensive game plan I've ever seen Michigan draw up and execute.  The 2016 and 2017 games were fantastic.  Carr's retirement party against Floriduh was brilliant.  Denard running around, through, and over ND in South Bend was imaginative and flawless.

None of them touch that game plan...  Much credit to both Gattis and Harbaugh for it, too.  Instead of cutting bait and finding yet another OC, JH worked with Josh on the running game, and gave Cade time to figure out both himself and the offense through the season.  Right now, this offense is an official juggernaut - it has weapons everywhere and 'SEC speed' all over the field.

The best part?  Get past Iowa, and nobody will expect Michigan to have any speed.  You know the story - another Midwest running game that plods along...

I never liked Gattis. I said it when he was nominated for the Broyles that I must not know what I'm talking about with him. That appears correct.

People can try to give Weiss or Hart credit, but Gattis calls the plays. He gets the blame when things don't go right, I'll certainly give him credit when he murders OSUs defense.

The early doubts about McNamara made some sense. The calls to replace him with McCarthy did not. At no point in the season was McCarthy performing better overall, other than in garbage-time appearances against already-beaten inferior opponents.

It got crazier as the calls to replace McNamara continued deep into the season, in spite of mounting evidence that McCarthy was not yet ready to take over as the starter. The coaches did a great job of balancing the two, and both players handled it well — one of the rare cases where rotating QBs actually made a team better.
