VVSIAP: Michigan a 41 Point Favorite

Submitted by FauxMo on
Very, very, VERY sorry if already posted, but vegasinsider.com is showing Michigan as a 41 or 42 point favorite this weekend at various sports books. I never bet on Michigan games, but even if I did I wouldn't touch that one. 6 touchdowns is a lot. On the other hand, Hawai'i looks sucky and they have to travel 84,000 miles (IIRC) to get here...

We score 21 points in the first quarter and 14 points in the second quarter

Third and fourth quarters look like the second half of the BYU football game.

I won't be taking it because it isn't a good bet either way (hawaii or michigan)...

however I do think that we will cover 41 for two reasons:

1.) hawaii looks bad, travels a long way, and doesn't play a style to keep the score low.

2.) we are good, we know the eyes are on us, and we will play hard each and every play.

I don't think we cover.  Harbaugh isn't going to expose anything as he just wants to win.  I understand style points and Harbaugh beats to his own drum but I think we'll comfortably be well ahead early in the 3rd quarter.  Even if our 3rd or 4th string is in their I see Hawaii play their first string as they try to build confidence / continuity and their first string is good enough to run with our 4th stringers.

To the people on this thread taking the over or under, are you actually saying your bet against the total points ? Or are you incorrectly trying to pick a team ? Not sure !

But with a new starting QB, a few questions on the OL, etc., I don't think the first quarter will be a walk in the park - probably closer through the first half than anyone expects.

However, that travel schedule and the relentless pounding of huge OL and DL will wear down the Warriors. It'll be a completely different game (and Michigan team) by the fourth quarter.

Say, 35-10(ish). Don't need to run up the score, just work on timing issues with the starting O unit. Let the 2nd stringers run out the clock in the last few drives.

Random facts for those who like random facts. When Hawaii has had to travel the long distance to a B1G school, they are 0-5 all time: Lost 53-10 at Iowa in 1991 Lost 42-14 at MSU in 2005 Lost 38-0 at OSU last year Lost 28-0 at Wisconsin last year Lost 28-7 at Wisconsin in 1987 The majority of the time, when they play a Big Ten school, the game is at their place. And they have done respectable in those games having beaten Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Purdue and Northwestern. Another random fact: Mike Patrick called our game against Hawaii when Harbaugh was our QB. Now 30 years later, he's calling our game against Hawaii with Harbaugh as our coach.

A couple of those games they were equally as horrible (Wisconsin 1987, Minnesota 1997) and somebody had to win, which they did.

But the rest of the games, they had seasons that ranged between 8-4 and 11-3. The most recent being winning against Purdue in 2006 and John L. Smith's MSU team in 2004.

I was rather surprised to learn that Hawaii hasn't always been a dumpster fire in terms of results.

We'll be in game 1 with a new QB and a new defensive scheme. I could see the offense being sluggish at first and Hawai'i getting into double digits. Maybe a hum drum 38-10 type of game

People saying they look really bad didn't watch the game. I. Thought their quick passing offense wasn't bad. They lost steam in the second half, but they moved the ball on the ground and in the air. The quick passing will neutralize our rush and our DB's will be tested all day. I would bet we get 2 INT's in this game. I agree that we will pull away in the second half but I think the first will be nerve wrackingly close. Maybe 24-17 half? Then we win 42-17

I did and they are bad. Cal's defense is atrocious. Hawaii's receivers drop a lot of balls and are. Or particularly explosive. They have a decent RB, but again Cal is so bad defensively that it is hard to tell how good he really is. I question how closely you were watching the game if you thought their inaccurate QB and iron-handed WRs equally "wasn't bad". I also wonder how you did not notice Cal's atrocious defensive line getting stood up on almost every down.

I saw most of the first half and that QB was sailing every other pass. I'm confident we cover because our second string D should be able to shut them down and our second string O should still be able to score on them. Jim will keep it vanilla but Hawaii won't be able to stop that, either.

Hawaii seemed prone to making a lot of mistakes. If we get a couple of turnovers in the first half, I see us covering easily. Otherwise we will probably not cover because we will run the ball quite a bit and kill the clock.

Michigan will win, and it won't be close.  But this being Michigan's 1st game of the season will probably lead to a few busted coverages / plays and other mistakes. These won't be enough to ever have the outcome in doubt, but they might just keep the point spread under 40 points.

It's not just about travel. It's about asking your body to function properly in 3 time zones that pretty much couldn't be farther apart and all in a single week. I don't care how conditioned you are, the body is not meant to do that.

I don't think this will be as big a blowout as some are thinking. Hawaii played at OSU last year and made a game out of it. I think we still win comfortably, but I won't be surprised if it takes a quarter or two to really get things going.

That seems a bit high, just because I don't see Harbaugh leaving a bunch of starters in that long, and the offense isn't necessarily designed to run up scores.

41 will be hard to cover.  I was surprised to see how Hawaii's offensive line pretty much handled Call the entire game and paved the way for about 240 yards rushing.  It would have been more were it not for the QB's inconsistent accuracy, some drops, and some fumbles.  Cal has a bad defense but Hawaii's offense looked potent nonetheless (not including the horrible ball security).

I'll be very disappointed if our offense comes out choppy or sluggish, as many people are predicting.  I want to see a bloodbath where they score early and often.  I'm predicting 52-17, something thereabouts.

if you are going to bet on Michigan at all. But before betting remember this Cal offense plays hurry up and play as soon as you can every down. They try to snap the next play ASAP and that is huge for over/unders (I called 55-24 and taking the over of 64.5). They have a solid QB in Webb (Think Okorn but better) and good backs and got to 51 VS Hawaii.  At Michigans pace that wouldve been more like 35.

I dont bet Michigan but if I did I wouldnt want to worry about second half action. Either its close and we will play tight and nervous (doubt it) or its a blow out and it will be full play clock eating runs that will get around 5 per carry.
