UW 247 Mod Ruth Robbins' Opinions Regarding David Long

Submitted by Maizen on

She posted this gem late last night.

1. Good Lord...climbing trees...sleepovers...what's next? Ring & run and prank calls? Can you imagine Bo Schembechler or Bear Bryant or Don James or Ara Parseghian doing this stuff? It's not like Michigan can't recruit on its own merits, they don't need this unseemly silliness out there representing their program.
2. Not a flame, but why is he elite? No national titles, no super bowls, I know he's a big time competitor but what got me was the snarky little comment to the 49er organization about reaping what they sow. I think he'd leave Michigan in the dust if he could get a job with the Bears. I agree with Scoop on this one.

But I don't see him as elite -- he's a competitor, no question, but he's a failure in the NFL and that burns him more than anything. Now Pete Carroll is elite -- he won national titles at USC and then a Superbowl and knocked Harbaugh and his 49ers out of the play offs twice.

Nick Saban is elite. Urban Meyer is elite. Let's be more selective about who we pass out that title to.

MOD EDIT - more professional titles, please. - LSA

but she is clearly a big homer for Pete Carroll and sounds lke a big case of sour grapes regarding a kid Washington wants. Pete Carrol is a good coach who also cheated while winning at USC. I'll take the energy and enthusiasm of JH any day. Just because they are going to lose Long to Michigan, she got all personal over her disdain with a rival coach to her favorite pro-team's coach. She just has a bad taste of sour grapes.

Being a Wolverine fan (born in AA) and a Seahawks fan (lived in seattle for 15 years) I can say that Pete Carroll is a great coach both on the college level and pros. Yes he may have known and been involved with non-compliant internships for 3 USC players. That doesn't necessarily taint what he did on the field but certainly could cause some to question his character.

Having gone through the Steve Fisher era it's hard to be certain what a coach knew about what people around the program were doing.

I was estactic when Harbaugh came back to UM. I got to watch Jim play in AA. Even though Seahawks fans hated him they knew he was a good coach. People don't hate on crappy coaches. He's won everywhere he's gone on the college and pro level.

What you have to understand about Robbins and a lot of other Seahawks fans is that they're angry at the world because the Panthers pissed in the Seahawks Cheerios. Nothing is safe from they're hatred, even themselves.

Harbs is just one of many lightening rods for depressed Seattlites that are in the throws of their dark and dreary rainy season.

my point was mostly that she is a bitter fan from the Seattle area bitching about Harbaugh's tactics. My secondary jab at Pete is because I read that report on Reggie Bush and the crap his family was pulling. I agree Pete is a great coach, and I love him in Seattle. But I believe (fwiw--which is really nothing), that he had his blinders on, on purpose. None of that has anything to do with the writer's rant...my real point was that she's just pissed, like you pointed out probably from what happened to the Seahawks, and now a rival coach is getting attention and potentially taking a recruit from her local team. Sour Grapes from a fan who happens to have a forum.

Well, the Harbaugh story is still a work in progress. One Super Bowl appearance, pretty successful at Stanford. What he built at Stanford seems to be continuing, and the fall of 49'ers after his departure was pretty quick. He is now 1 year into his reign at Michigan, so a little early to see how that goes. We're happy to have him, and the West Coast and Pete the cheat at USC Carroll and his Seahawks have slid back to the pack. Just whining over Harbaugh's proven ability to get media coverage. If she doesn't like it, who cares.

in four years along with a near Super Bowl victory, raising the stature of a football program to elite status long the dregs of college football, developing outstanding quarterbacks making their mark from average to outstanding, takes a special talent.

For Michigan fans, Harbaugh's credentials have never been in question. For the rest of the world, they will soon find out what we have always known about our coach born with an enthusisasm for his profession and life unknown to mankind, and that is this: he is a winner. And that is an infectious condition to those he surrounds himself with and those that support him.

I was curious to see what this Ruth Robbins looked like after reading her preposterous opinions. First thing that comes up on Google when searching for her is this thread.

Michigan > Aunt Ruth

There's nothing wrong with climbing trees. Sleepover is a bit odd, but chalking that up to HARBAUGH. This woman seems to hate fun, which is exactly what Harbaugh and the recruits are having.

I think that's her point. She thinks the Bears don't want him because he is a failure. Harbaugh is a Ginn Jr injury away from a Super Bowl in year 1. In the 2nd year he is a non pass interference call away from winning the Super Bowl. The third year his team played a better game against Seattle in the NFC championship than Denver played in the Super Bowl. It s a good thing they did lose. He would have still been in the NFL right now if he won a SB. This dumb broad is an example of why people bag on women who get involved in sports.

It takes a special kind of stupid to argue that a coach with the 5th highest NFL winning percentage is a failure in the NFL.

Followed the Lions my entire life, would LOVE to have even made it to a Super Bowl.  The game against the Redskins for the NFC Championship still bothers me.

Which brings me to the point of "No Titles", don't you have to win a NFC/AFC Championship Title to get to Super Bowls?!?

Saban is the failure NFL wise.  Meijer is too big of a pussy to even try his hand at the NFL.
