Statement from Hackett: believes Gary was offered "incentives"

Submitted by MGoPolo20 on

Jim Hackett was quoted as saying he thinks Gary was offered "incentives" during his recruitment. Very bold statement for someone attached to an athletic department to make and I'm pretty surprised it hasnt gotten any more coverage so far. My bets are on Ole Miss or Auburn as to who it was

I generally follow the SMU rule. If a program who is generally considered an also-ran, suddenly becomes a world beater with no discernible change in team structure, I always assume the boosters and football decision makers decided to start operating outside of the rules, I.e. Clemson and Ole Miss.

look for a sudden insurgence of talent at a place of high expectations and relatively modest recent results.  I am not saying "Michigan State basketball," but "Michigan $tate baske_ball."

They should have just found somebody to recruit who was actually named Neon Budow if they were going to go this route.

My gut is both Ole Miss and Clemson did things - Ole Miss for sure and Clemson most likely.  But I would not put Clemson in the "new money" class many think they are all the sudden.  They are different than Ole Miss.

Taking out Ivy League schools Clemson is tied for 20th in all time wins at 703 and has a 60% all time win %.  To frame that Florida has 701 wins all time and a 63% win rate and Auburn has 74 wins and a 63% win rate.

Ole Miss on the other hand is not to be found in top 75 of all time wins.

I have no doubt they both break the rules but Clemson hasn't had the metoric rise like Ole Miss.  Clemson was usually in the 7-9 win programs who most felt could and should be better.  There's also a reason 'Clemson going to Clemson' came to be - they'd be on the cusp of something really good only to shoot themselves in the foot.

For those that were wondering what I was suggesting when I said I have on concerns with Gary is this half of what I was referring to. I heard specifics about this yesterday. It did not involve Gary specifically but those around him. It is only 1 or the 2 things I heard yesterday that made my concerned. The other did not involve a school but dealt with his announcement and something extremely odd that has happened maybe once or twice in the history of announcements on ESPN. I just saw both situations as huge red flags.

In part to tell you that Hey something is going on... Would it have really been any different to come tell you that (for example) his family in the Clemson area was offered $280,000 and a cut on their mortgage if they got him to pick Clemson... I still wasn't going to be able to tell you who told me. Ihear a lot of things but I'd like to keep my job. Telling everything I have heard, which might not all be true, would be inressponble and would probably cost me my career at some point. As a journalist I also know that not everything I know I can share. I promise you TVH has not shared even half of the things he has learned over the years. You know how I know? Because I've worked with him. It's been my attempt to share what I know with this board... Would you rather me not? Should I also keep quiet on who is Michigan's biggest threat for DPL?
