Snap Counts

Submitted by Blue boy johnson on September 14th, 2021 at 9:13 PM

I find it interesting to scour this info and notice who’s playing and who’s not. For instance what what was reason Junior Colson had more snaps than Nikhai Hill-Green. Or even something like Roman Wilson getting 56 snaps is surprising to me. TE distribution interesting to me.

Thought I would post. I believe some of you will enjoy looking at this.

The one that stands out to me is Jeter.  I would have predicted a fairly even distribution with our DTs but Mazi and Hinton at 40 with Jeter at 17.  Morris, Upshaw, and Jenkins all had more.

Upshaw and Morris both have more positional flexibility so not really a fair comparison.  Morris and Upshaw(I think) were both playing the DE/OLB position, but on obvious 3rd down passing situations we went with both of those guys at DT with Hutchinson and Ojabo at the DE/OLB position.

It does appear that Jeter may have been passed by Jenkins.  Jenkins was out there on the first defensive series, Jeter was not.  Plus obviously snap count discrepancy.

Love seeing Mazi Smith seemingly take the bull by the horns with this opportunity. He looked good from my untrained eyes. Hope Jenkins continues his ride as well and change the outlook of our interior.

I also noticed Colson out there a lot which I think projects well for his future and development.

Was somewhat disappointed that Baldwin played so little. I know he’s probably still dealing with injury and they weren’t throwing it around, but I figured he’d be valuable from a blocking standpoint with the throws that they actually were making. Additionally, Henning, Wilson, and Sainristil all seem kind of redundant whereas a big bodied receiver could be a nice safety net with Bell out and All full of drops.

Another that caught my eye: Rod Moore playing 13 snaps as a true freshman is very impressive.  I barely remembered he was on the team until last week.  He seems to have a bright future

I’m guessing that the staff is taking a hard look at Wilson but I think he’s an inadequate blocker. Guessing his reps fall off big time.  I’d rather see All moved to WR to fill Bell’s shoes.

The big surprise for me is Makari Paige barely playing. It's one thing for RJ Moten to pass him but a true freshman? He seemed pretty promising last year, just a lost as a freshman. I know it's a different defense, but it's all new to Moore.

He played as a true freshman last season, but I don’t think he necessarily looked good. That’s not to say that I’m not giving up on him, just that it doesn’t shock me that others have passed him.

Moore being the one is definitely a bit surprising though considering the number of DBs on the roster who were more highly touted. But there’s typically and hopefully always a couple unheralded guys who step on campus and shine. Hopefully Moore getting beat on that TD isn’t a sign of things to come though.

In the same way, I think that Junior Colson is fitting in well with Mike Macdonald's defense. He has a real solid body, and is physical.

I think if they can get Domani Jackson, his great recovery quickness would make him very valuable at times at Slot DB, which is what college defenses have been needing now.  Every team has to deal with the fastest WR being put in the slot. So I hope they can get Domani Jackson, and along with the other 2 corners they have committed, Will Johnson and Myles Pollard. The more speed they can get on the field the better.

You can see in this vid, from 8:47 to 10:24, DeVonta Smith being covered by an LB. That's just what Alabama wanted. Someone with speed like Domani Jackson should be in that space.

Some interesting numbers. Wilson #s vs Henning??? No Barnhart-is he injured? The staff must really like what they are seeing from Colson-Paige, not so much. It is good to see the number of players getting in for at least a series or two-this, IMO, is a big deal.

It looks as though the starters and the next 5ish in is being established.
