Snap Counts
I find it interesting to scour this info and notice who’s playing and who’s not. For instance what what was reason Junior Colson had more snaps than Nikhai Hill-Green. Or even something like Roman Wilson getting 56 snaps is surprising to me. TE distribution interesting to me.
Thought I would post. I believe some of you will enjoy looking at this.

The one that stands out to me is Jeter. I would have predicted a fairly even distribution with our DTs but Mazi and Hinton at 40 with Jeter at 17. Morris, Upshaw, and Jenkins all had more.

I was actually surprised to see Crippen come in for Vastardis. He’s listed at 290 but doesn’t look that big. Not sure I want to depend on a freshman at center right now
September 15th, 2021 at 12:59 AM ^
Vastardis went out with double leg cramps. Someone without a club hand needed to go in.
September 15th, 2021 at 7:08 PM ^
True you don’t want someone with a club hand. But it’s been like that for awhile as we’ve obviously been working other guys in there. I was surprised to see a true freshman already winning the back up job
September 14th, 2021 at 10:42 PM ^
Can't say I thought Morris would have more, but I just couldn't buy the Jeter hype for the 3rd year in a row. I expected Mazi and Hinton, both 5 stars or near it, to have considerably more snaps. Upshaw and Jenkins also have tremendous upside so that's not surprising.
September 15th, 2021 at 12:56 AM ^
Upshaw and Morris both have more positional flexibility so not really a fair comparison. Morris and Upshaw(I think) were both playing the DE/OLB position, but on obvious 3rd down passing situations we went with both of those guys at DT with Hutchinson and Ojabo at the DE/OLB position.
It does appear that Jeter may have been passed by Jenkins. Jenkins was out there on the first defensive series, Jeter was not. Plus obviously snap count discrepancy.
September 15th, 2021 at 11:51 AM ^
Jenkins passing Jeter is good news for depth and what's happening going forward. Don't think either Smith or Hinton are dominant yet but at the same time developing who we have and the fact that Jenkins is playing well enough to get more snaps has me feeling a lot better about the DT position going forward!

Glad they are rotating and keeping everyone fresh. The starters getting 40 snaps means they can go harder and be more effective without tiring. In the past they've gone games where Carlo Kemp hasn't left the field.
September 14th, 2021 at 9:22 PM ^
No Donovan Edwards? I thought he played some, could be wrong tho.
Daylen Baldwin?
September 14th, 2021 at 9:31 PM ^
You’re correct. Even had a carry for four yards.
September 14th, 2021 at 9:31 PM ^
Donovan definitely got one carry. Unless there was a penalty on the offense to nullify the play, he should be listed. I'm wondering what happened to the Baldwin hype train. Outside of that one catch from JJ, it's been silence on his front.
September 14th, 2021 at 10:08 PM ^
He has an injured ankle
September 15th, 2021 at 11:20 AM ^
To be fair, it has been silence from pretty much the entire passing game since that TD from JJ...
September 14th, 2021 at 9:27 PM ^
I think we can make a WR sleeping walking joke here?
September 15th, 2021 at 6:36 AM ^
What did the sleep walking wide receiver say to the QB?
I am not peeing on this vacuum cleaner.
September 14th, 2021 at 9:28 PM ^
Chuck Filiaga came here with a lot of hype but it just has not worked out
September 14th, 2021 at 9:35 PM ^
Thankfully Keegan seemingly is working out though, which would negate that this year. I remember there was some talk around the time he committed that he was a prospect that already peaked and wouldn’t live up to his ranking.
September 15th, 2021 at 9:23 AM ^
He's been a good soldier and teammate, and he has played better this year than last. He can obviously back up most places on the line. He's valuable as that 6th man.
My guess is he would be starting a lot of places without our talent up front.
September 14th, 2021 at 9:29 PM ^
Serious note: Fuck I wish Bell were field participation able. i think the score would have been 69-0
September 15th, 2021 at 8:47 AM ^
Nice.
September 14th, 2021 at 9:32 PM ^
Love seeing Mazi Smith seemingly take the bull by the horns with this opportunity. He looked good from my untrained eyes. Hope Jenkins continues his ride as well and change the outlook of our interior.
I also noticed Colson out there a lot which I think projects well for his future and development.
Was somewhat disappointed that Baldwin played so little. I know he’s probably still dealing with injury and they weren’t throwing it around, but I figured he’d be valuable from a blocking standpoint with the throws that they actually were making. Additionally, Henning, Wilson, and Sainristil all seem kind of redundant whereas a big bodied receiver could be a nice safety net with Bell out and All full of drops.
September 14th, 2021 at 10:41 PM ^
Pretty sure I saw Baldwin whiff at least one block on replay.
September 15th, 2021 at 12:39 AM ^
It'll be interesting to see the urf for the reciever because I felt as tho they were all pretty bad in down field blocking. Those bubble screens thrown were a good read but got blown up by bad WR blocking (looking specifically at Wilson and Cornelius Johnson)
September 15th, 2021 at 9:09 AM ^
It is interesting that much of the criticism about Gattis has centered on his offensive coordinator duty when, aside from Ronnie Bell (and I acknowledge that is a pretty big exception), his wide receiver room has generally underwhelmed during his tenure.
September 15th, 2021 at 10:01 AM ^
Blocking on a bad ankle is probably a bad idea if you want him back to 100% asap.
September 14th, 2021 at 9:41 PM ^
Another that caught my eye: Rod Moore playing 13 snaps as a true freshman is very impressive. I barely remembered he was on the team until last week. He seems to have a bright future
September 15th, 2021 at 8:38 AM ^
What stood out to me was he was beat on a TD by Washington. After the play, Hutchinson was coaching him up and supporting him. Great to see. I havent seen true leadership on the field in so long.
September 15th, 2021 at 9:27 AM ^
That was a sweet route. You see TDs like that all day long on Sunday, so I can't blame him for that.
I admit I had to google the guy myself. I don't usually pay much attention to Freshmen as they so rarely contribute.
September 15th, 2021 at 10:39 AM ^
Wasn't just the route, the throw reminded me of Lombardi's throws to Ricky White last year - spot on, like he was good. I thought Moore had good coverage on the play, but the route and throw was just perfect.
September 14th, 2021 at 9:50 PM ^
I’m guessing that the staff is taking a hard look at Wilson but I think he’s an inadequate blocker. Guessing his reps fall off big time. I’d rather see All moved to WR to fill Bell’s shoes.
September 14th, 2021 at 9:55 PM ^
Typically you want your WRs to be able to catch though.
September 15th, 2021 at 5:02 AM ^
That’s only important if you throw it to them
/s
September 15th, 2021 at 8:59 AM ^
This is dumb. He’s an awful blocker but he’s healthy, he’s fast, he runs good routes and he’s a freshman eligibility wise. Outside of Johnson, he’s the only other WR at 100% who is listed above 6 feet. They can move other guys into the split zone flow block but he needs reps.
September 15th, 2021 at 9:02 AM ^
I’d rather see All moved to WR to fill Bell’s shoes.
You cannot be serious.
September 15th, 2021 at 2:47 PM ^
Does seem like a bad idea. Willing to bet All has bigger feet
September 14th, 2021 at 10:14 PM ^
Gonna need more snaps from Jeter going forward against the big boys. Line rotation is key for a long season
September 14th, 2021 at 10:45 PM ^
The big surprise for me is Makari Paige barely playing. It's one thing for RJ Moten to pass him but a true freshman? He seemed pretty promising last year, just a lost as a freshman. I know it's a different defense, but it's all new to Moore.
September 14th, 2021 at 11:04 PM ^
He played as a true freshman last season, but I don’t think he necessarily looked good. That’s not to say that I’m not giving up on him, just that it doesn’t shock me that others have passed him.
Moore being the one is definitely a bit surprising though considering the number of DBs on the roster who were more highly touted. But there’s typically and hopefully always a couple unheralded guys who step on campus and shine. Hopefully Moore getting beat on that TD isn’t a sign of things to come though.
September 15th, 2021 at 1:08 AM ^
I think West Bloomfield played a defense very similar to Don Brown’s which is why Makari had such a leg up on the other Frosh in that class.
September 15th, 2021 at 2:04 AM ^
In the same way, I think that Junior Colson is fitting in well with Mike Macdonald's defense. He has a real solid body, and is physical.
I think if they can get Domani Jackson, his great recovery quickness would make him very valuable at times at Slot DB, which is what college defenses have been needing now. Every team has to deal with the fastest WR being put in the slot. So I hope they can get Domani Jackson, and along with the other 2 corners they have committed, Will Johnson and Myles Pollard. The more speed they can get on the field the better.
You can see in this vid, from 8:47 to 10:24, DeVonta Smith being covered by an LB. That's just what Alabama wanted. Someone with speed like Domani Jackson should be in that space.
September 15th, 2021 at 3:29 AM ^
I also noticed this, but the main thing I remember about Paige last year is an absolutely awful attempted tackle. I assume he's bigger and stronger this year, so I hope he can catch back up with the expectations created by last year's playing time.
September 15th, 2021 at 10:35 AM ^
Paige just did not look physically ready for Big Ten football last year and seemed slow to react to proper angles. I was hoping it was a wide eyed freshman thing. The fact he was on the field seems like it has to say something.
September 15th, 2021 at 10:55 AM ^
Moore has been playing mostly nickel/SS and Paige has been playing FS. I'm more worried (or excited?) that Moore has passed the guys ahead of him as backup Nickel. Hopefully says more about Moore than the guys he passed.
September 14th, 2021 at 10:55 PM ^
I guess Aidan Hutchinson was just moving so fast he was impossible to count.
September 14th, 2021 at 11:30 PM ^
Was Jordan Whittley wearing the number 3 instead of 93?
September 15th, 2021 at 1:09 AM ^
He was pretty hard to miss when he came on the field no matter the number. Looked decent to me in a very limited sample size.
September 15th, 2021 at 1:37 AM ^
At the snap on one play, he stood up whoever he was across from and gave him a surge back. It was good to see that from the middle of the line.
September 15th, 2021 at 7:40 AM ^
Some interesting numbers. Wilson #s vs Henning??? No Barnhart-is he injured? The staff must really like what they are seeing from Colson-Paige, not so much. It is good to see the number of players getting in for at least a series or two-this, IMO, is a big deal.
It looks as though the starters and the next 5ish in is being established.
September 15th, 2021 at 11:18 AM ^
Washington knew Wilson can fly and kept their safeties back. Was strategy by Harbaugh I bet. Why else would he start him and then run all day...
I would say Moten earned it, rather than the staff not liking what they see from Paige. Can't play everybody. But Paige should play late in game on Saturday.
