Schiano: "Better...but not good enough to beat THAT team"

Yeah, a bunch of coach speak and all that from the coach of a struggling team, but I enjoy hearing the first impressions after the game from someone well-paid (overpaid?) for knowing football:

It was nice to see good sportsmanship both before and also after the game. Many of the players from both sides showed respect right after the game ended with various kudos. It was a good look after a hard fought game. Rutgers laid some lumber down on some of the Michigan players who were a little banged up.

This looked like Corum's most physical game this season. Keegan went into the tent for a while, just to name a few.

From the In The Trenches post-game show/pod

JH: "They ran a nice game. Greg Schiano is a heck of a coach. That team over there, they tackle. They had a nice schemed up twist game that got through that blocked our punt ... we knew we were going to be in for a real fight here. Rutgers always plays us tough. It was a 7 point ball game last year and last time we were here it took us 3 overtimes."

He doesn't usually go out of his way to compliment guys he doesn't think deserve it. So, I dont think there's any hard feelings here.

Rutgers spent the entire day trying to murder our QB and Harbaugh complements their tackling.

This is probably one of many reasons our team has toughness and other teams are soft.  I feel like a team that invites this kind of physicality wouldn't give up 418 yards on the ground and throw sandwiches in protest.  Or concede a TD on 5 running plays in a row at the end of a 42-27 game.

My recollection of early December 2007 is that Greg was offered the job after some interviews with Bill Martin, first at an awards banquet that most coaches attended and apparently another interview that may have been video only.

I remember going to bed on a Thursday evening and hearing the 11 PM Sportscaster saying that Michigan was going to name Schiano the HC the next day at a yet to be scheduled press conference.

Waking up that Friday and finding out he had backed out and we had been rejected by a Rutgers coach was distressing. I called a fellow UM grad who had some good connections inside the athletic department. At first, I thought Greg had been lobbied to stay and that Rutgers would ante up big time for the stadium and facility improvements (which didn't happen until YEARS later after the Great Recession and long after he left for TB). That was a smoke screen. What I heard happen (and makes a lot of sense) is that either Greg talked to someone in PSU (either JoePa or someone high up in the staff) OR PSU contacted him - either way, he was an assistant there from 1990-95 and reportedly revered JoePa. While he may not have been "promised" the PSU job when JoePa would retire, he may have decided to keep his options open.

It's been a good 10 years since I read John Bacon's Three and Out book, but I recall from the book that Greg did turn down the job only to try to reach out a week or two later to "re-accept" the job but Martin wasn't returning calls.

If he had become our HC for 2008, I think a few positives would have happened: (1) Ryan Mallett stays and develops into a pretty good QB, (2) we don't lose at home to Sparty in 2008 (and probably wins there in 2009) - Dicktonio would have been 0-4 vs. UM with another loss at UM in 2010 and would never have been elevated to saint status at MSU (and we wouldn't have had the 60 minutes of unnecessary roughness game), (3) we would have won one or two B1G titles but never reached the status we've come to appreciate in 2021-22 (21-2 and counting).

This title is a bit misleading.  At least to me.  I thought he was comparing Michigan to OSU but he is comparing Rutgers to Michigan...

Rutgers has improved but isn't good enough to beat Michigan.

Schiano was sincere.  He is an excellent coach with a good track record. He showed respect for Michigan. Harbaugh respects him.  No need for the OP to disrespect him.

I didn’t know about that.

And you resort to Juvenile comments.

And with respect to Bo, I wasn’t there 40 years ago.  I do know parents and adults back then, and even more recently, put way too much trust in someone with an MD.

Apparently, you were there. I think we can all tell what side you would be on in another historical event. John 8:7.
