Sam Webb "gut feeling" a misnomer?
Sam Webb issues "gut feelings" from time to time about recruit commitments--he's usually right (e.g. Mustapha Muhammad).
Typically gut feelings are understood to be instinctual, felt without a strong rationale or data to necessarily back them up. But from what I can tell, not being a close follower, Sam's predictions are based on firsthand knowledge of the player and family/coach/friend perspectives as well as a good understanding of the recruiting landscape.
So why does Sam call these predictions gut feelings? They seem to be anything but.

It's the Sam Webb version of subtweeting but long before subtweeting was a thing

For the process. He gets inside info and doesn’t kiss and tell.

The OP’s autocratic regime is used to making having the state media issue a very strong directives without much worry for how they’ll be received by their people. Instead of metafors though, they just use poor grammar and arcane word choices to get a point across.

"...when I give my gut feeling I’m giving you an opinion. I’m not giving you a report."
Certainly seems like more of a report. An anonymously sourced report, sure, but certainly not a "gut feeling" as anyone outside UM circles understands it.

I thought the gut feeling was about recently eaten burritos

“Not being a close follower” sums up this whole post.

Thanks for the responses and confirmations. It appears a "gut feeling" is exactly what everyone thinks it is. It's kind of a weird charade if you ask me, but if the kids find some benefit in how he puts the info out there, that's good all around.

Downvote for using the word ‘charade’

I'd take it a step further. It's using the term to convey not just a different meaning, but nearly the opposite meaning.

What a dumb topic.

basically it’s sam’s way of spoiling a kid’s big day and profiting from it
October 20th, 2017 at 9:24 PM ^
And that's the point. Or maybe everybody else has been too dumb to figure out that his gut feelings are ridiculously accurate.

Antenna up more than hearing that Sam as a gut feeling. Usually means there will be rejoicing for Michigan fans. I don't care what you call it, I love it!

Intuitive knowledge can be highly rational if it comes from a place of self-awareness. OP's perspective reflects an outdated and overly simplistic understanding of emotional intelligence. A complete human being has access to both faculties and they are mutually reinforcing. That goes for Sam's gut feelings too. He has the objective knowledge but also a good feel for how high school kids behave.

Underrated post. Sounds like you have thought about/studied this. Recommendations for where I can digest a bit more?
October 20th, 2017 at 9:58 PM ^
Sam eats his most important notes to keep them from anyone who might be inclined to snoop through his trash. Since this causes Sam some obvious discomfort, let Sam have some positive vibes by calling his hints "gut feelings".
Imagine how your gut would feel if you had to do the same, yet didn't have any outlet other than the shitter.
October 20th, 2017 at 10:08 PM ^
The gut feeling is an anonymous person

I thought I had heard his "gutt feeling" was recruit told Sam he had silently committed or member of Michigan's staff told Sam recruit had committed.
