Sam Webb "gut feeling" a misnomer?

Submitted by Optimism Attache on

Sam Webb issues "gut feelings" from time to time about recruit commitments--he's usually right (e.g. Mustapha Muhammad).

Typically gut feelings are understood to be instinctual, felt without a strong rationale or data to necessarily back them up. But from what I can tell, not being a close follower, Sam's predictions are based on firsthand knowledge of the player and family/coach/friend perspectives as well as a good understanding of the recruiting landscape.

So why does Sam call these predictions gut feelings? They seem to be anything but.

The OP’s autocratic regime is used to making having the state media issue a very strong directives without much worry for how they’ll be received by their people. Instead of metafors though, they just use poor grammar and arcane word choices to get a point across.

Thanks for the responses and confirmations. It appears a "gut feeling" is exactly what everyone thinks it is. It's kind of a weird charade if you ask me, but if the kids find some benefit in how he puts the info out there, that's good all around.

Antenna up more than hearing that Sam as a gut feeling.  Usually means there will be rejoicing for Michigan fans.  I don't care what you call it, I love it!

Intuitive knowledge can be highly rational if it comes from a place of self-awareness. OP's perspective reflects an outdated and overly simplistic understanding of emotional intelligence. A complete human being has access to both faculties and they are mutually reinforcing. That goes for Sam's gut feelings too. He has the objective knowledge but also a good feel for how high school kids behave.

Sam eats his most important notes to keep them from anyone who might be inclined to snoop through his trash. Since this causes Sam some obvious discomfort, let Sam have some positive vibes by calling his hints "gut feelings".

Imagine how your gut would feel if you had to do the same, yet didn't have any outlet other than the shitter.
