this may be of some local interest
A lot of people are now calling his tenure a complete and utter failure. Many of those same people were arguing that he deserved a 4th year only 2 weeks ago. Now, I'm not saying that these two statements are mutually exclusive, but I do think that revisionist history post-fire looks at RR in a much worse light.
The fact of the matter is that a majority of people wanted him back for a 4th year. This doesn't mean his firing was a mistake. But I hope it shows that people still believed in RR at the time he left. That he could have turned it around in his 4th year.
RR was a good man and a good coach. Wish him nothing but the best. This was a class act.
The Majority of us that wanted him back, mostly wanted him back because we didn't see a viable replacement. But those same people recognized that the defense was a disaster, not just because of the freshmen playing, but because they weren't prepared properly (IMO) and weren't aligned in most situations that were conducive to them being in position to make plays. Everyone knew that a change had to be made on the defense, or else we would be in the same boat. I will always back RR, but I hope he makes better decisions in regards to his defensive coaching staff in the future.
The Majority of us that wanted him back, mostly wanted him back because we didn't see a viable replacement.
I don't think that's accurate.
LSU seemed to do just fine with 3 freshmen playing Db in the cotton bowl. I for one will be glad when the freshmen meme expires.
Not sure if you stopped reading when I spoke of the freshmen playing. I also said the defense wasn't properly prepared, and often not put into a position to suceed.
That was my point. Everyone has always blamed the bad defense on being young, but if you really watched it wasn't a case of youth. The coaches never gave those kids a chance to make a play. They were unprepared and not "coached up" for what was coming their way.
That's why I'm so ready for the "They're bad because they're young" meme to expire.
I don't think most people wanted him back. Maybe on this sitem but not most of the fan base or ex-players
that Brady Hoke is walking into a MUCH better situation that RR walked into. Better players/depth and alums not trying to lynch him every time he blinks. Hoke thanked RR right at the start of his presser and that was huge in my book.
class guy. Whomever Coach Rod is coaching will be my 2nd favorite team.
Feel exactly the same.
Very class act. I think RR got a raw deal at UM. Between the media, the former players, the boosters, it just seemed like everything was aligned against him. He made the most of his situation and never complained. I hope he lands a solid job and has the success he was accustom to before coming to Michigan. I will always feel bad about the ways thing went for him at UM.
I agree with this completely. I don't think he was ever given much support internally after he was hired, either from the current administration and boosters or former players and coaches. It's a shame, really, because it felt like a lot of people associated with the program were willing to let it go through all these troubles just so they could be rid of RR. I have nothing but hope for our new coach, but I also feel a bit saddened and disappointed by the way the RR era was handled. I really do think he could have succeeded here. Granted, he made some mistakes (particularly with his DCs), but I think he'll be vindicated when he moves on someplace else and succeeds.
Exactly. Thank you.
political assination. The "club" didn't want RR playing in their sand box. As I've said before, the biggest mistake RR made was leaving WVA. He could have been the Bo of the university of WVA. Good luck RR, I'll be rooting for you.
So where did Allen's brother-in-law's come from?
I have to confess, that while I don't wish for any massive or long-term failure for Michigan at this point, if, hypothetically, a Brady Hoke-led Michigan team faced a Rich Rodriguez-led Clemson or Tennessee or UConn team in a bowl on January 1, 2013, I'd root for Rodriguez's team. Just to watch heads asplode in Ann Arbor and in the editorial offices of the Detroit Free Press. I am not fucking kidding.
he was already in a spot that was too warm.
The Rodriguez fashion sense is gone from Ann Arbor, thankfully. I hated upon those threads, both fabric and site. Khaki and blue with maize lettering, 'M' else 'Michigan." Khaki, maize and blue are your choices from now on. Keep the ostensibly swanky blue collar crap in private, United Auto Workers and West Virginians.
You aren't going to do to well on this board.
I rescind nothing. The sh!t those hicks wore on the sidelines is worthy of condemnation enough. Simple and clean wardrobe please. You let your playing do the talking. Else go union and experience the consequences like my family did. Hicks.
Plenty of UAW workers are in MICHIGAN. Are you saying that employees of Big Three automakers are hicks by virtue of being in a labor union?
Most had no choice, though. You went union or you ... what. So much for individual decision-making. I guess the communist collective knows best. Pray for the Volt, dudes.
RR's stool samples show more class than you are showing on this board.
EDIT: Still having trouble figuring out the whole embed thing.
Click the "Source" button on the left side above the text box. THEN paste the hilarious youtube embed that we probably would have enjoyed. If you click the source button again, you'll see if it worked (youtube vidoes will show a box that says "flash" in the middle).
Now if only I could figure out how to have the video start later in the clip...
I mean this with total sincerity: go fuck yourself.
I'm a conservative on this board, and I assume the majority are liberals. WGAF? The rules say no politics for a reason...THIS BOARD IS ABOUT MEEEECHIGAN ATHLETICS, a passion we all share. I've had no problem interacting on here b/c I follow the rule. There are other sites if you want ot rant about the left or right. I suggest you read the rules and keep yourself to M topics...you'll do much better (if you even care).
One more thing...I'm mostly a city boy now, but came from a small town...Napoleon, Michigan. Trust me when I tell you that most "hicks" know exactly what they are and aren't offended by it. Most are also hard-working, productive Americans. What's so wrong about that? Not everyone has to be just like you.
I rather enjoying feeding him downvotes.
Is it okay to neg you if I went to Napoleon's rival, East Jackson? Nahhh, +1 for Jackson county!
Senator, you do know that somewhere around 10% of the workforce in the U.S. is union labor.
I'll do the math, that's not that much.
Everyone that has ever worked as a member of the UAW, or was raised by one.
No worries. Enjoy deer hunting for food.
My great granfather was a sit down striker and those unions you despise have provided a lot of workers rights for non union workers.
Edit: this is a reply to Senator Bluetarsky
The fuck does any of this discussion have to do with the UAW?
Look what venison does to a goofy guitar player from Detroit? I'm going to be 54 this year and if I had any more energy I'd scare you.
Gay, or European?
Gay AND European
or anywhere for that matter but still funny. I could sympathize with a long winded post on pictures like this not being posted but not the chick pics.
Is that you?
Please keep this up. This might be a nice bedtime meltdown.
I've never felt so good sacrificing away 5 mgopoints so I can neg each one of your comments, jerk.
bit the dust, too.
Oops, more incoming.
You got laid off and now you want to blame it on people from West Virginia. Makes sense.
Yes because what I am concerned with in a head football coach is fashion sense.
Provide you chose to act upon that aspect of the program when another poster voiced an opinion with which you disagree.
Because I'm tired of having to donate points to neg you with... Seriously....
I couldn't care less if my coach walks around in a Belichick cut-off sweat shirt as long as he won games. Same goes for if he's wearing an Armani suit and loses them all. Your stereotyping of UAW workers and RR as being a hick disgusts me. The classic Billy Madison clip will be synonymous with you for the rest of my e-life.
You are a complete idiot. You do realize that RR didn't go to the MDen and buy his clothes, or design the coaches polo, correct?
what the fuck are you talking about, sport?
More Lloyd Carr, here looking just a bit Wal-Martish (and defeated) to me:
And more Rich Rodriguez, looking better perhaps than Lloyd ever did:
And your point, Bluetarsky, was what?
Please give me more points so I can keep negging this dim-witted waste of life. My grandfather worked for GM with horrible arthritis until he was 67 on a grinding wheel 6 and 7 days a week. I live in Upstate NY now with a great education and job b/c he provided the opportunity for my father to go to UM to get a world class education. An opportunity he never had.
In fact posbang all in this thread so we all have some sacrificial mgopoints.
I feel bad for the man, and he has been as classy a person as one could be throughout this entire process. He'll succeed somewhere, and I will cheer him on wherever he goes. May his teams have great success, except when playing the University of Michigan.
I always thought that RR was a good guy and I really hope that he succeeds in his next job wherever that may be.
I miss coach rod :(
And not in the way which is a put down to anyone else. I just always really liked the guy, he was one of the friendliest people I've ever met.
The guy had charisma. We met him at an event and he won us all over. Hope he lands somewhere great where his coaching meets huge success.
.. Bo Schlembechler - circa 2010.
If only he beat OSU in 2008. If only he beat OSU in 2009. If only he beat OSU in 2010.
What a kind move on his part. I hope the Salvation Army makes a lot of money!
and your donation, Coach.
When RR got teary eyed, he was a faggy, cry-baby, loser jerk.
When Hoke pert-near cried -- while talking about all the players he has touched -- he was a hero.
so it goes.
John Boehner had the ol' tear ducts working overtime on the House floor the other night. Is he a cry-baby loser jerk? Is he from Ohio? Film at 11.
John Boehner is perhaps the most douchy cry baby loser known to man.
I am drunk please forgive my political statement.
Cheryl Burnett's Michigan gear ended up at the Salvation Army on State Street after she was let go. Very unceremonious.
This is cool.
Still amazed by the support on this board for RR. Snake oil salesman, nothing more, and he still has many of you sold...
the guy is doing something for charity. Acknowledge it and move on.
Smells more like banhammer.
cool. Brady Hoke would've walked/swam to Africa and gave the clothes away.
He should have given his UM gear to T Pryor. Dude is broke as a joke. Hopefully the salvation army shows mercy on the poor kid who received a 150k education for nothing.
Yeah because he traded all of his clothing for tattoo's.
Tattoos are a great way to support your struggling family. The state of Ohio subsidizes them more than corn and ugly uniforms put together.
Kinda weird to me he's donating everything already. I know a coach at the high levels very well, and when he was released he didn't get rid of everything. He felt a connection to the school and still wore the stuff.....
Who's to say that he donated every article of Michigan clothing that he owned? Isn't it possible that he kept some?
Maybe your friend wasn't getting back-stabbed and submarined by "Michigan Men" the minute he walked in the door.
Way to flip an act of charity into one more twist of the knife on the way out.
I was very much an RR supporter. Your the one flipping out. I just merely said it was a little weird to me that he got rid of it so fast. Im not even saying its wrong, im glad he donated it rather than just throwing it out.
Most likely wasn't subjected to 3 years of total bullshit from everyone and everyway. The media gangbanged him from day 1.
I've been in a situation where I've been an outsider coming into a tight knit community, and it didn't work out despite my best efforts. Its a terrible feeling; especially when you are just making the right progress. I did learn a lot from this experience though and I'm sure Coach Rich will as well.
He will take another University to the top someday.
I wish RR & his family happy trails. Wanted him to succeed...howevea,completely behind Coach Hoke.
I agree with you here Brodie, but I don't think it's the right forum.
It's only about politics, religion, and homosexuality...so we could use some less controversial stuff after the last few weeks.
I agree with you here Brodie, but I don't think it's the right forum.
Seconded. I doubt that Coach RR was considering this (or knew about this... I know I didn't). I think he was just trying to give some gear to folks who could use it.
Classless bitch move. Just the same kinda shit I'd expect from the people that never gave him a chance in the first place.
I never said it had anything to do with Rich, I doubt he knows. My point was that people should think and read up on charities before they run out and donate money to them... essentially, I'm explaining why I wouldn't rush out to this auction.
this article is from 2004. I doubt it's still relevant.
into lawlessness anyway. Might as well go down swinging for a reasonable cause, instead of an RR-Hoke fight.
Edit: reply fail to David from Wyoming
<firing pistol wildly into air>
YEEEEEEE-HAWWWWWWWWW!!!!! WOOOOOOO DOGGIEEEEEESS!!! YAA-HAA-HOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
Um, is this a joke about Wyoming? Have you ever been here before?
it was a joke about the board descending into lawlessness. Also, somebody just ban Senator B already.
Senator Bluetarsky has not violated a single MGoBlog rule. The fact he takes pleasure in outsourcing union manufacturing jobs has no bearing on Michigan athletics.
What happens when I get huge numbers of negative points?
I get dinged and I check your profile out to see if you're pure troll or not, and ban appropriately.
I simply had the audacity to mention that I hold unions accountable for their behaviors. Which is fact. Up until that point in time here, I was receiving posBangs. I do not troll.
You do not troll, but you sure do make obnoxious comments.
that fashion wh*res lurk here. Good thing Prada wasn't mentioned, as it tends to be a veritable lightning rod online.
Classy move from a classy guy. I hope he and his family can enjoy this time away from the game; he'll get another chance to enter the presser-cooker of coaching soon enough.
Ask whether he requested a receipt. We do this through Salvation Army with most of our discards. Unfortunately speculative value is an IRS red flag. $0.02
And yet, I still negged you. Huh. Go figure.
At this point its neg on sight as far as I'm concerned.
Just when you think you can't see another record on the jackass meter........
Hmm, debating whether or not to go and pick up some Mich gear on the cheap. Maybe Rita left her bean dip recipe in one of the pockets...
I'd be there in a heartbeat. RRod had some nice jackets, from full on winter to shell style.. You never know what could be in those bags.. game worn jerseys, etc?
I'm in Sandusky right now, but I'm pretty sure the wife is gonna push for a drive home back to Columbus rather than 2 hours further north..
Classy move by RR . I wish the guy well in the future. it seems the cards and alums were stacked against the guy from the start in ann arbor.
I'm behind Hoke and the team, but RR always represented michigan well during his time here and I wish him the best.
It really did seem he was never given a chance from day one. But he always tried to represent The University of Michigan with class and I wish him the best in what ever the future may bring for him and his family. Well said Ron Burgundy.
Good story - RR was poorly characterized while at UM because of a couple of former players with axes to grind and, oh yeah, the jerks at the Freep. He's a good guy who deserved better, and it is nice to see him moving on with class.
I really wish it would have worked out for him here, but I also think his best coaching years are yet to come. He's always been a class guy and I wish him and his family the best.
I can't believe the haters would take the opportunity to take a few shots at the guy in a thread like this. Let it die, man. You're making yourself look very asinine, Band Guy.
RR could have been a troll and burned all the stuff... c'mon man, he's a multi-millionare. You really think he could have cared about the clothes? At least the man had enough decency and caring for UM he took the time to even gather the stuff up? There are too many people out there nowdays who have forgot what this country was built on... I know there's no politics and I'm not going there, but talk crap about the UAW and other unions.... maybe if you ever had a job where you had to lift you hand to do something other than type... I know if I was RR I would have probably laid all the clothes out in my front yard in a big 'FU' and set them on fire.
Seems the Senator is trying to earn his trip to Bolivia one point at a time instead of in one shot like Fumanblue. At this rate, a few more posts and they will cross paths somewhere around Panama or Guatemala.
