Ron English as DC again?

Submitted by yoopergoblue on

Just saw on Twitter that Ron English just put something up on Facebook about how he just receieved a call from Coach Hoke and that big news is coming out soon.  English as the DC again?

Will Brady Hoke recruit players in the same way he is recruiting his coordinators?

I think I'll die bit by bit everyday if that is the case.

Are you people forgetting the disaster our defense has been the past 3 years?

Sure, "the Horror," but we also beat MSU, PSU, ND and Florida that year.  We finished the season...gasp...RANKED.  Remember that?  Sure it was #18, but REMEMBER THAT???

Not saying hiring English would be a dynamic move...he wasn't a great DC, but rather a decent one with some defend-the-spread issues.  But he was millions and millions of mega-miles better than anything we've had since.  We live in a smashmouth conference, after all, so it's far, far worse for us to have defend-the-smashmouth issues than defend-the-spread issues.  Incidentally, that's exactly the problem we've had.  6-18 in the Big 10 proves it.

Would I choose English over Mattison or Austen?  No.  Would I choose him over GERG or Shafer running the 3-3-5 on crack?  Hell yes.

Giving up 35 points to Florida that year.  We gave up 24 to MSU.  ND was starting a true freshman QB on a bad 9 loss team.  PSU's offense was boo boo that year as well.  So yeah, I remember that.

When the season started, most people said the defense would lag behind the offense, so that was no surprise.  But I'm not going to be lulled into the myth that the Big Ten is a "smashmouth" conference and he could help in those areas.  Every team outside of maybe Wisky has elements of the spread.  If we can't defend it, we'll get butchered.

Does he suck?  No.  But the 2007 season just shows he's an average coordinator.  But I would take him over Mattison.  He ran off multiple good players in the early-mid 90's, and I don't want to see a repeat of that.

1) Won the Florida game, against Tim Tebow in his record-setting Heisman season

2) Shut out ND, freshman QB or no

3) Beat MSU

4) Beat PSU

5) Won 6 games in our conference

6) Finished #2 in the Big 10

In Rich Rod's 3 years we never:

1) Beat an SEC team and/or a team with a Heisman-winning QB

2) Shut out anyone, even cupcake teams

3) Beat MSU

4) Beat PSU

5) Won even 4 games in our conference

6) Finished even in the top 6 in our conference

Agree with you on English's merits as a DC.  But the fact that people seem to misremember the past 5 years so egregiously baffles me.  Our defense UNDER English was somewhere between "solid" and "meh."  Our defense AFTER English was, first, "a step in the wrong direction" and then devolved into "historically, uniquely bad."  Realistically, then, a return to English would thus probably mean incremental improvement over the status quo.  Again, is that what I want?  No.  But it's still soooooo much better than GERG's 3-3-5 on purple drank.

You realize that 07 team had 5 players from the offefnse alone drafted into the NFL right? We didn't have to win with defense. It's fun to list off facts. Here are some off the top of my head:

1. First team in NCAA history to lose to a DII (I think they were still called that back in 07) team while ranked inside the top 10.

2. Got beaten so badly by Oregon that the starting running back was laughing in the huddle at the end of the game, wondering which defensive lineman was going to give up next.

3. Let up at least 34 points to 4 different teams.

4. Lost 4 games while having the leading passer and leading rusher in U of M football history on the team.

Please don't think that winning 9 games = good defense.

No it was a D-1AA team who we all totally underestimated. He also only gave up 14 pts. to OSU who played for the MNC that year. And with that great offense that you speak of we scored a grand total of 10 points in the losses to Oregon and OSU, so all can't be blamed on RE. Is he the next reincarnation of Buddy Ryan, no but he is better than what we had.

We allowed far fewer points in 06 and 07 than in 08, 09 and 10. We beat as many Big 10 teams in 07 as in 08, 09 and 10 combined. Oh, and Michigan's record setting offense? Wasn't in 07, it was in 10. But our record-setting defense? You know, the wrong kind? Also wasn't in 07, but in 10. So, all things being equal, far more credit for wins goes to the offense in 10 than in 07. This is now academic since we hired a different--and better--DC. But the point stands. English's defenses were far, far better than what came after him. Sorry.

There is no comparison because GERG + 3-3-5 = DOOM!  What I remember is our defense getting hammered against OSU, USC, App St and Oregon between 2006-2007 in 4 consecutive games.  Not until the fearsome duo of Jimmy Clausen and Anthony Morelli did our D stop someone.

If you start equating English to GERG, then yes, that would be an upgrade, but what are we upgrading the D to?  What we had three years ago?  I'd rather get it right and hire a DC that's going to get us well beyond "improvemnt over the status quo".

So it's moot.  But my point was that too many people on here have come to accept this myth that things were so horrid under Carr and his staff, while they were promising under Rodriguez and his staff.

The fact is, in 2006 we had a very good team that really only had one bad half the whole season, and in 2007 we had a talented team that did not live up to expectations but still managed to win a whole bunch of games against good competition, in part because of its defense.

While that's not ideal, I made the point that it was light years beyond the unmitigated, deepening disaster we experienced on defense 2008-10.

Like I said earlier, I would not have wanted English over Mattison or several other candidates.  But I would have seen his re-hire as a step up from GERG's and RR's sherm-3-5.  Some of the reaction on here was as if English would have been a step down from that.  I don't see any way in which it would have been, unless you're so mired in revisionist history that you can't see clearly anymore.

Still wouldn't have been a great hire, though...

For the love of Christ, just no.

NO.

I'm willing to give Hoke a chance, and his enthusiasm for the program is great to hear.

But this would be a huge step backward, which could cause serious head asplosion.

Ron English was a great DC. He has put many of players in the NFL. Since he's left we may have a few go, but that is it.

The only problem with our defense then was our players were not conditioned well and that is not RE fault. That was the S&C coach's problem then. The S&C coach had been with MICHIGAN since Bo and no one would let him go until RR came in and then he retired.  With Enlgish we were feared.

I hope this is true. I've been wanting this since he left, cause they would not give him the HC job.

Come home RE, COME HOME.

When you get the chance look up his bio and then look at the S&C coach.

Don't blame RE. Blame the old HC's for not bringing in a new S&C coach

I like Ron.  So far I'm not blown away by the rest of the coaches coming here from SDSU.  Get as many M guys as possible.

my plan worked perfectly everyone! I hacked into his account and put that up.  Guy hasn't used it in months.
What a great way to make the mgoboard panic!

I was able to cope with:

  • the past 3 years
  • the delay in firing RR
  • the "national search"
  • The Hokester
  • and the loss of a few rew recruits.

But I simply cannot cope with Ron English as our choice for DC.  The very thought of is has me in slight panic mode.  I have work to do today yet this news will now force me to neglect my responsibilities and research the hell out of this rumor in hopes that it's not true.

(As I type this, I'll rationalize that the rumor ISN'T true because there's absolutely no reason to wait to hire a DC if the choice is some guy whose season has been over for 2 months.)

Honestly, I can't figure out the negativity regarding English (and just about everything tied to the Carr era).

In 2006, we had one of the best defenses in the country - we were scary good.  Yes, we couldn't stop Troy Smith - neither could anyone else - dude won the Heisman, wrecking just about every D that he faced that year.

Ron English is a good D coordinator.  And, more importantly after the debacle that DB caused with the 2011 recruiting class, he was a great recruiter (D. Warren was a 5* from Cali that he pulled in).

English would be a hell of a step up from whatever the excuse for a D staff that we had the past few seasons.

We were scary good against a scary bad Big 10.  We won a squeaker against our current coach that year, then got lit up by the two good teams we played in 2006.  Then at the start of the next year, with loads of talent, we were again torched by Appalachian State, then Oregon in consecutive weeks.  Ron English was very average if that, and played with a massive talent advantage over most of his 2006 opponents, with players who somebody else had coached up.

obvious sarcastic remark...so maybe he is better suited as an Asst. Coach (DC).  Maybe the combo of Hoke's defensive mind and English together would bring the D back to U of M standards.

Ron English - EMU

2009    0-12

2010    2-10

  He's improving....I guess

On WTKA this morning, Sam Webb stated his opinion on this, saying that he thinks that that Facebook post is a "hoax post on a hoax page." He said he is 99.99% sure it's a hoax.

He talked about Greg Mattison or Teryl Austin being more likely possibilities for DC.

I've started to piss on this parade because our recruiting is in such bad shape this year.  Basically, our recruiting class is so bad it's going to be impossible to be considered national championship material in 2013-2014.  Could we still win the B10?  Absolutely.  But no chance at a natty when you've got ~10 kids a few weeks before signing day and not one in sight that looks like a "sure commit".

The Ron English news would be like someone bringing a group of monkeys to my piss parade, and having them throw shit at everyone.  That's what it would be like.

Please God No. Ron English is a nice guy, but I absolutely do not want him anywhere near my defense. To me this is like a younger version of Gerg.
