OT: State of Florida Going After CFP

Submitted by andrew_ on December 12th, 2023 at 9:08 PM

Florida is amazing in so many ways. This is not one of them - The State A.G. has decided to be a silly person and go after the CFP via the courts. https://twitter.com/AGAshleyMoody/status/1734683110363807769

This is clearly silly (I can't overuse that word in this context) political posturing, but some FSU law alum types I'm friends with down here have said that despite the politicking aspect, it's actually about the lost revenue from not being selected. I haven issue with that for a few reasons:

  1. It's a shakedown at best, because nothing will be actionable for remedy other than a payout
  2. It sets a bad precedent
  3. It's another lens into college football being nothing more than a state-run business, concerned more about revenue than anything else

But I am also a cynic.

Everything this year in college football has set a bad precedent. From the cancel culture beatdown to leaving an undefeated FSU team out of the CFP so plant based Pete and ESPN get their way. Add in 20 mill (potentially) for Harrison JR to come back and college football lost its luster.

I don’t care if it’s a political stunt. At least she has the guts to try and do something about it.

Sports are supposed to teach our youth about values, work ethic, overcoming challenges, building a team ect.

What the CFP did was teach these young men that it’s all about money. It’s an atrocity.

I agree with most of what you said, but I kind of have to believe that the FSU players found out pretty early on that this was all about money when they started cashing their NIL checks.

The day and age of college sports (at least big time, revenue-generating college sports like football and basketball) being solely about teaching values, work ethic, team building, etc.? Those days are over. Dead and buried. They are still absolutely part of the internal structure of once you're inside the program? But college football as a whole? Its a business, whether that's right or wrong.

I'm not saying any of the FSU players have been complaining that its all about money. I haven't paid enough attention to hear what their specific thoughts are, so I don't want to put words in their mouth. But if any of them have been complaining that this is indeed all about money, my question back to them would be "Then why do you not seem to have any issues cashing NIL checks?"

A cheap way to score political points and "pander to your base," but I doubt anything of serious note comes of this. Emotions are still raw, the wound is still fresh, and everyone is still all up in their feelings over what happened. Not that I blame FSU fans for feeling the way they do, but again, I'd be shocked if anything actually results from this.

The decisions have been made, the matchups are in place. You can't retroactively go back and change anything, and if you're ever expecting the CFP to come out and say "Yeah we made a mistake and we're sorry," then I have some beautiful beachfront property in Nebraska to sell you.

This is what Attorneys General do in most states - throw their weight around in a way that gets them on the news and gets them votes when they run for reelection or governor.

At this point, she's only served the CFPSC with discovery, but I'm not sure what the legal basis is - I wouldn't be surprised if the Committee successfully fights it.

this just seems like such a poor use of time and resources.  not to mention that it seems whiny as hell.  The CFP publicly states that roster/personnel issues/changes/injuries can and are considered in their rankings process.   I understand FSU is disappointed and feels they got the raw end of a deal here, but the committee isn't hiding anything, imo.

their guidelines say they can use injuries in considering ranking.  FSU's star QB is injured.

seems like the end of the story to me.   but, Florida gonna Florida I suppose.

There are so many deranged people out there...it's actually scary!  Look at this comment that I just saw on the Eleven Wussiers website from a wacko Ohio loser talking about their latest loss...

"You get over being a victim of a crime but you still want justice. These guys can’t be too hard on themselves, they did what they could on the field but the cheating was too much. Either directly or indirectly the cheating made the difference as it has the past two seasons. It will be clear to all once Alabama finishes stuffing TCUN in a coffin that all their “success” is due to cheating. Never forget. Never forgive. Hopefully the Florida AG investigators looking into the CFP  committee will also have a go at looking into TCUN’s cheating. They can demonstrate real damages to FSU and make a compelling case as to why TCUN should have been excluded from the playoffs this season. I am still holding out hope that they replace TCUN with FSU or someone else before the playoffs so that the cheaters aren’t rewarded and the games aren’t vacated. Compelling. NCAA and CFP and TCUN/B1G have left the door wide open for lawsuits and will lose."

Yes, I'm going to make this political.

If a Democrat from a "Blue" state launched this type of action, Republicans in "Red" states would be whining about wasting taxpayer dollars, misplaced priorities, etc.
