OT: Princess Kate Diagnosed with Cancer

Submitted by VCavman24 on March 22nd, 2024 at 6:41 PM

Sad news out of Kensington Palace today that Catherine, Princess of Wales, has been diagnosed with cancer.  The type of cancer was not announced, though she is undergoing chemotherapy.  This follows the news last month that King Charles has been diagnosed with cancer.

Regardless of one's feelings of the Royal Family, Kate is only 42 and is a mother to three kids.  Hopefully she (and Charles) beat this horrible disease.

I feel bad for anyone with cancer and their families. That said, we are Americans and my Irish grandparents would roll in their graves if I had any tears to shed over that collection of racist, pederast, colonialist gangsters.

the Royal family should be abolished, their property seized and shared among the descendants of the millions and millions of people they enslaved, subjugated and disenfranchised.

fuck cancer yes, but the British royal family rivals cancer in the amount of suffering inflicted on humanity.

While I have no dog in the fight, I know what you are talking about having known a few Irishmen who did not look kindly upon the the Brits. Regardless of the bad blood between the two groups, we know she is getting the best she can in the UK. But, she probably would be better off flying to the US for care unless they are flying in US doctors.

And what really sucks is that I believe she was forced to do this because someone hacked into the hospital computer system and got her medical records

I didn’t necessarily think opening this thread would lead to a discussion on healthcare, but here we are. I’m entirely unsure of what metrics you’re using to suggest that the US is worse for cancer care than “basically all of Europe”, but you’re way off base. I imagine you’re conflating super sub-specialist care with the health care system in general. If you have a very complicated or high risk health issue, the overwhelming odds are that you’re better off in the United States than anywhere else. You might not be able to afford it (I suspect Kate probably can), but it is the best. Now, if you have a general health issue, or no insurance, you’re probably better off in Europe.

You remind me of one of my favorite Billy Joel songs:

... And there's always a place for the angry young man
With his fist in the air and his head in the sand
He's never been able to learn from mistakes
He can't understand why his heart always breaks
His honor is pure, and his courage as well
He's fair and he's true, and he's boring as hell
And he'll go to his grave as an angry old man....

You're not wrong, of course, but ... feels like a lot of venom directed at a woman (and her relatives) that had nothing to do with any of that. Feels like you're blaming them for what their ancestors did. And not even Kate Middleton's ancestors!

I don't much care about the British royals one way or another, but ... shit, man, what did Kate Middleton do to your family, exactly?

Yeah, I have zero empathy in a general sense for the royal family complaining about a single thing because its ridiculous these people live this entitled life due to nothing but bloodlines but Kate was not born into this life and also it's a friggin health issue not "I am tired of playing polo and my elbow was injured"

Wacky take - that said many countries inhabitants rightfully should have a lot of ire towards the English crown.

It's just polluting the message board.  Like, if any mgouser posted about their own family member struggling with cancer i would 100% upvote and leave a supportive message.  But like why are talking about a random person somewhere far away from Michigan with no connection at all to the university, to the state or to any mgousers at all?

Like if you care so much about fuck cancer go help any of the thousands of people here in our state with cancer.

Seriously, might as well be posting some random person in timbuktu got cancer you guys.  But if I post that now i get downvoted to hell, oh well, im obviously the minority here and the vast majority thinks the royal family matters to them.

Sorry if your relatives suffered at the hands of the British but your schadenfreude and vengeful attitude are emblematic of all that is wrong in the world today.

The present royals didn’t choose their lot in life, they can’t erase the misdeeds of their ancestors, and some don’t even want the job. But at least they are trying to make amends for past sins with the causes they now support.

This isn’t entirely accurate.

The Royals are heads of state. A living symbol of a 1000 plus old history that goes back to before William the Conqueror. Their ancestors quite literally made the state we call England. That can’t be said of most British or its diaspora.

Our ancestors made no decisions to create a nation. They were too busy trying not to die from Plague and eeking out an existence.

The Royals live off monies paid to them by the state from revenue generated by the Crown estates as well a their private holdings. In exchange they represent the UK and its interest by attending ceremonies, promoting government approved programs, etc.  They are promotion tools at this point.

Royals are a central part of British identity for many Brits. For others…not so much. At some point the Royals will probably cease to exist. What that means for an unity in an increasingly fractious UK one can only guess.

You might want to take another look at the Windsor(House of Saxe-Coburg) family tree. I think you'll find that the House of Oldenburg is neither British nor 1000 years old. And it's not as if the Hanovers that they replaced were actually British or ancient either. They were a younger house and just as German and the junior line of their own family.

Commie high, please tell me about YOUR personal relationship with the royal family and how it instigated this extremely insensitive and frankly repugnant response.

for you or anyone else that cares to respond, my two sets of grandparents last names are Bruce and Collins and we can trace that as far back as you’d like to.

Hmmm.(Also a descendant of famine refugees)

  • The British Empire did what every empire has done in history except they took it global. Africa, Asia, and the Americas had empires pre-European colonization who killed huge sums of people. British didn’t really bring anything new in regard to brutality. For whatever reason people want to believe that empire, colonialism, and genocide are recent phenomenons.
  • The Royals haven’t been directing the empire since James II. The Glorious Revolution and all that.
  • The current Royals colonized no lands, do not practice pederasty, and while perhaps racist are hardly along in having to battle that affliction.
  • Ireland was first occupied centuries before the British Empire came into being. The Anglo-Normans, the heirs of William the Bastard, were invited in by the leader of a Irish tribe.
  • Britain has been invaded and colonized multiple times throughout it’s history including by the Irish.
  • Kate Middleton and Charles are humans suffering from cancer. That is all that matters.

They are glorified thugs and thieves, like so many, but her having cancer won’t result in greater equity among the people of this world, so we can allow ourselves some sympathy IMHO and maybe even show some restraint in digging up old wounds

A better use of time and energy would be to pitch a reality TV show to the BBC where they exhume the remains of Oliver Cromwell and contestants get to compete over who can come up with the most poetic ritualistic defilement of the old bastard’s rotten bones. But then, this thread probably wouldn’t be the best place to do that, either…

"They are glorified thugs and thieves"

Britain is one of the freest countries in the world. Britain is the cause of roughly zero percent of the worlds problems and has done more good and spread ideas that lifted more people of horrific poverty than any country in the world if you count the influence they had on the US.

But of course you are using words like "equity" and given your downvote, the likelihood of you having a worthless major and purple hair is very high.

Why don’t you have a good cry about it. Honestly, I’m so sick of people in 2024 crying about what someone’s ancestors did to their ancestors 1000’s of years ago.

i’m Welsh and my family was also horribly treated by the British many years ago. My father has Native American blood and that side of my family was also horribly treated by the British, but you know who wasn’t? Me. I’m actually embarrassed by people with similar blood lines that today, seek some form a retribution, apology or handout because of what happened to their ancestors. Get a life and make your own way in it.

As a person in the medical professions I feel absolutely terrible for any and everyone that is in some way inflicted with this fucking disease.

Since this thread has already gone off the colonialism rails, figured worth adding a small nugget here. I suspect what she’s getting is technically adjuvant chemotherapy (I think she may have used the phrase “preventative”), which is slightly different than prophylaxis. Sounds like she had a resection of a tumor (if I had to venture a guess, potentially cervical, early colon, or ovarian given her age/gender) and the surgeons said, “we got it all but let’s do some preventative chemo”. If they were being fully transparent, they could’ve said, “we got the tumor out and while we don’t see any evidence it has spread on the scans, surgery alone for localized disease is insufficient __% of the time so we need to give chemo to try and kill any small groups of cells that may have spread”.

Speaking of Indy, I had a cancer meeting there today and the researcher who coordinated it had both a UofM alumni and a winged helmet sticker on his computer. Which was awesome, because I sure didn’t anticipate discussing both the Rose Bowl and osteosarcoma in the same convo. Was that you?!?!?

It's terrible for anyone to have cancer and I hope she beats it, but I've always been puzzled why any American cares about the British Royal Family beyond the occasional random thought.

"..... compassion for suffering, no matter whose it is, is or was one of the redeeming characteristics of Americans ....."

As my avatar suggests, I'm a bit "older." I've seen a lot of American culture. What you wrote is definitely not consistent with my USA experience. It's an "every man for himself" culture, increasingly.

Slightly older like you (and before anyone can say boomer - I am not), but 1974's take is spot on in my opinion and experience as well.  Many things from a larger cultural perspective have greatly improved, but there has been a largely disturbing trend at the individual level that is quite concerning.  I don't believe the change is all simply because we are older and everyone tends to think the "old days" were better.
