OT: Penn State fraternity suspended over online photos

Submitted by GoWings2008 on

I did my due dilligence and didn't see this posted, but...

The Kappa Delta Rho frat at PSU was suspended after private Facebook pages included pictures of nude women sleeping/passed out.  Police said that over 150 students and/or alumni had access to the pages.

Given their recent history, this is really not good for the school.  You'd think that after all the other crap going on in State College that kids would refrain from this sort of behavior.

I just think that the internet has allowed the stupid people to display their stupidity to everyone on a regular basis.

In the past, the stupid people were just as damn stupid.  You just didn't know about it because they were privately stupid most of the time.  These days everyone is publicily stupid.

But I will tell you this,  it is really depressing finding out just how abysmally stupid a huge chunk of people are.  If nothing else, the internet has taught me that I had massively overestimated the human race in general.

Agreed. In the pre-internet days, if you did something stupid, it was in front of a limited group of people. Even if you picked the biggest party of the year to show your ass, the damage was fairly contained. But now, anybody's dick move can go viral in a day - and it never goes away.

The thing I really think is stupid is Twitter. I'm not condemning everyone who uses it, but when it falls in the hands of the wrong person, well oh my God. Those people who have no filter between their brains and their mouths? Yeah, let's give them a tool that allows them to spew those unfiltered rants to a worldwide audience. I'm sure nothing bad will happen.

for, oh, I don't know ..... the next 50-100 years.  I'm probably under-estimating.

It's also an easy way for some posters to get "lots of green up arrow votes" for saying stuff like "Fuck Penn State!"

I get it, it is what it is.  C'est la vie, even as a PSU alum, it doesn't bother me.

1) This is part of prominent ongoing conversations about (a) college kids (including those in the Greek system) being dumb, and (b) campus sexual crimes being a serious, under-resolved and difficult-to-tackle problem. The fact that it happened at a major institution in our conference that previously dealt with issues of underreported sexual crimes tends to make it of interest and relevance here.

2) The green arrows point up. The red arrows point down.

and being the butt of them may be the unfortunate by-product of this type of story, but the posting of these news stories is not to play jokes (yeah, I'm one of the chief offenders of making jokes) but its a tragedy that this went on.  Its a tragedy that the other story happened, too.

For myself, I wish these stories never happened.  Its not that we want to sit on any ivory tower and point down and judge anyone, even though that's what it seems like we have done on occasion.  We highlight so we can learn and hopefully keep this from happening anymore so none of our sons or daughters go through any sort of pain like this ever.

Edit:  IMO, the "fuck Penn State" is a reaction that people, students and alumni alike, allowed this situation to develop.  As if they hadn't learned anything from the Sandusky situation.

If "PSU hadn't learned anything from the Sandusky situation" --- wouldn't PSU students have just covered this up???  And then we wouldn't even be talking about this news story.

Your first 2 paragraphs were thoughtful, but then you took the easy way out in the 3rd paragraph: "ha ha, same old same old, fuck them!!!"

I'm sorry, but the "hadn't learned anything" comment doesn't make logical sense.  If PSU students hadn't learned anything, this news story (and thread) doesn't even exist!

All that said: many PSU folk screwed up in 2011 (& years prior), I accept that, I accept the penalties that happened thereafter.  I get it, it is what it is.

wasn't intended to be a "ha ha, same old same old" moment.  It was just a read on the comment above and how I interpreted it.  We're pissed, as I'm sure you are as well, that no one stepped in and stopped this from developing.  It was group think gone terribly, terribly wrong.

The "hadn't learned anything" comment was directed at a general awareness that all students from that school should have, that they need to be going above and beyond to at least TRY and wipe away the awful memories that 2011 brought upon your school.

Honestly, I'm not trying to pour salt on your wounds.  I can't talk for everyone, but I'm trying to be straight with all this and not lump everyone at PSU into the category of folks who created this news story.

I like Michigan football.  Always have.  And The "JoeBots" in my school's fanbase annoy me greatly. Once Nov 2011-July 2012 occurred, I made a point of attending as many PSU road games as possible.  Doing that isn't cheap, I've put some $$$ where my mouth is.  Give other fans a chance to see MY face, a NON-JoeBot face, to attach to PSU.

I said this in a thread after our 2014 game, but the PSU @ U-M was the most delightful Saturday of the 15 non-State College games Penn State games I've attended in the 2012-2014 era.  Wonderful time, wonderful fans.  It was a great day, even though my school lost.  None of the neanderthals I've encountered in some other locales --- I've literally had opposing fans call ME, unprovoked & to my face, a "child abuser" and "enabler" in 3 B1G cities.  I'm not going to escalate that, it's not worth it, so I sit there and eat the crap sandwich.

Anyway, frat boys misbehaving is certainly a worthwhile topic.  But it's a little sad to me the (currently) most upvoted post in this thread is "F*** Penn State."  Again, though, I get it, and many folk here have no interest in a lecture.

God willing, 5 more road games to attend in 2015, and back in AA in 2016!

How is the fact that they should report sexual assault, rape, etc. different from what anyone should do? A lot of kids are going to Penn State because that's where they got in, or it's a pretty good school with in-state tuition, etc. Yes, they have a moral duty to report on crimes, but so do you. You don't get a pass on your buddy sexually assaulting a girl just because 10 years ago there wasn't a pedophilia on Michigan's campus.

It's sad to see a joke about wanting to see photos gets a ton of upvotes and no downvotes. It's sad that the majority of responses here aren't about how the incident is terrible but about how it reflects poorly on Penn State. But somehow it shouldn't reflect poorly on us as Americans. What about people who just live in PA? Do they have a special duty to perform night watches (or whatever it is you think PSU students must do "above and beyond") to prevent sex crimes?

What anyone should do is...

... protect those who cannot protect themselves.  That's like basic human decency 101.

I don't understand why a larger than acceptable portion of the PSU community doesn't get this.  They just think everyone is out to get them.

Seesh!

It should bother you.

It should bother you if you think this is some kind of joke.

It should bother you that there has been more public clamor for the wins to be restored than helping the victims.

It should bother you your school is a lightning rod for scorn around the world outside of State College.  How do you think Penn State looks on your resume now outside of Pennsylvania?  Right, wrong, or indifferent, in the real world, perception is reality.

It should bother you that a bunch of student athletes came out with 409 stickers on their uniforms.  I didn't know you could unrape the victims.

If you're a parent or ever become a parent, it should bother you.

The comments section on the interwebs of any article involving PSU should bother you.

The lack of public contrition from the PSU community should bother you.

If it doesn't bother you, you need to wake the fuck up!

the Oklahoma frat racism or the excessive damage by Mich Frats / Sororities?

I don't know if any of these three things are comparable to eachother except that they are all awful / stupid / illegal etc.

But I was young and part of large groups and neither of these three things 1) crossed my mind and 2) would I ever think about posting it

I dont think it's a bad comment. Group dynamics play a part. Fraternities, more so than other groups, tend to encourage solidarity and group think. Other groups do too, but fraternities probably have the most profound effect in my experience. It doesn't mean that the fraternities in themselves are bad, but the groupthink tends to get exacerbated. Simply because you didnt have an experience do does mean his point is less valid. if you think the issues of groups having racist thoughts, being stupid, or engaging in illegal activities while in college is limited to fraternities I'm not sure what world you've been living in.

Given their recent history?? Fuck where have you been man? The students, faculty and administration doesn't give a FUCK about what happened as long as the get their wins. FUCK PENN STATE

I know we'll all be quick to pile on Penn State any chance we get, but with everything that's been happening with frats around the country, even in our own backyard, it's probably safe to say that this is a Greek life problem. Not a Penn State problem.

Either that, or the Internet has just made people's stupidity that much more open to the public. Which it, you know, has.

Lots of bad news in the press lately about Greek life. You would think that with all of these stories getting not just local but national news coverage, that some would think twice about doing something so stupid.

I don't blame a school, fraternity, or anyone but the individuals for stupid shit that happens.  Unfortunately this gives more ammo to the anti-greek crowd.

My son graduates this year.  I would be appalled if he were involved in something like this.  As his parent, I hope that his mother and I have done enough so that he could understand this is just a very-very bad idea.  IF he happens to find a girl foolish enough to show her girlie parts to him he best keep his mouth shut about it as it should only be between him and her.

I also have a daughter who is 10.  Her mother and I will do everything in our power to make her understand that she shouldn't put herself in those situations to begin with before she is off on her own.  This isn't about blaming the victim or any of that bullcrap that gets thrown out when someone questions what the victim was doing.  Just questioning the thought process of all involved.

This is about young adults being dumbasses and if they didn't know any better than their parents are dumbasses too.

I don't know man... there seems to be a greater pocket of dumbasses in State College than other areas.  From the administration, to the athletic department, to faculty, to students, alumni, and fans, there has been VERY little contrition, sympathy, or public show of support for Sandusky's victims.

We have a ton of dumbasses in A2, but if a scandal hit A2 like it has PSU, I cannot imagine the people at Michigan behaving like PSU.

Who insisted on lighting a cigarette on a commerecial airline that was vidio taped in the last couple of days.  Karen Halnon, the associate professor, advised that it was to show solidarity with her idol Fidel Castro.

The employees and students of PSU seem to be on a roll.

This reminds me of the New York ad exec who, over the weekend, went into the restaurant at Bergdorf's already drunk, drank some more, then threw up on the bar and the patrons sitting at the bar. It was all over the New York tabloids. The guy just got hired in January as the Global Director of Strategy and Research at a big agency, working on the Chevrolet account. College students aren't the only stupid ones.

All this time, I thought (1) since ctrl+B/I/U didn't work immediately (need to go back and highlight the text), and (2) since there isn't a U up above, one couldn't underline here.

Now I know.  Stupid is me.  Sorry Brian.
