How is Jerry gonna Kill the Gophers?
December 5th, 2010 at 7:16 PM ^
I couldn't help myself! Thanks for the info.
December 5th, 2010 at 7:16 PM ^
A Killer hire for the Gophers.
December 5th, 2010 at 8:15 PM ^
Kill the Gophers next coach.
December 5th, 2010 at 8:21 PM ^
All these puns are killing me!
December 5th, 2010 at 10:33 PM ^
golfers? If I kill all the golfers, they're gonna lock me up and throw away the key...
Not golfers, you fool! Gophers! The little brown, furry rodents !
December 5th, 2010 at 7:17 PM ^
I miss the Harbaugh/RR posts already.
KIDDING!
December 5th, 2010 at 7:18 PM ^
Some pretty big names were floating around for this job. In the end no Lombardi or Bill Cowher just Jerry Kill.
"Son there is a man from Minnesotta on the phone named Jerry Kill." I picture the recruit picking up the phone and hearing the words "You have seven days."
December 5th, 2010 at 7:45 PM ^
I agree. Gopher Nation should probably be pretty upset considering some big names were being floated around. Personally, I don't know why Leach still hasn't landed a job. I tend to think of it being a Indiana Bobby Knight situation, where he went to Texas Tech and had a great run there. People are crazy not to scoop him up at a lower prestige BCS school as it seems he did wonders in that position at, yep again, Texas Tech. Hmmmm....perhaps that is where coaches with anger / discipline issues seem to like to go.

I think everyone's freaking out right now, but we're all going to wake up tomorrow with a shrug-plus sort of feeling. I'd love to see a demonstration of success at the highest level, but everyone has to move up sometimes. He's done everything you could ask in 1AA and non-AQ. He builds solid programs and does not look to be a flight risk. Lou Holthz is still remembered and reviled here.
For helpful consumption: Kill’s records at Directional Illinois.
2001 Southern Illinois 1–10
2002 Southern Illinois 4–8
2003 Southern Illinois 10–2
2004 Southern Illinois 10–2
2005 Southern Illinois 9–4
2006 Southern Illinois 9–4
2007 Southern Illinois 12–2
2008 Northern Illinois 6–7
2009 Northern Illinois 7–6
2010 Northern Illinois 10–3
December 5th, 2010 at 9:55 PM ^
look at Colorado. "sources" put Les Miles and Harbaugh into the mix. instead they hired a former player. it's always the same old crap when it's a lower tier school
December 5th, 2010 at 7:18 PM ^
Who'd he have to kill to get that job?
December 5th, 2010 at 7:19 PM ^
now if only he had an assistant name Tom..
December 5th, 2010 at 7:19 PM ^
In Minnesota
December 5th, 2010 at 7:19 PM ^
Booooooring
December 5th, 2010 at 7:56 PM ^
So are a lot of great hires. I thought they should have gone after the coaches from the Dakotas or Montana. It's a natural progression for one of them to move on to Minnesota.
Hopefully it doesn't work out too well for them. I like easy wins every once in a while.
December 5th, 2010 at 9:15 PM ^
Second this. There were much, much worse hires for Minny out there. I don't like this one bit as he'll have the Gophs competitive in two or three years.
December 5th, 2010 at 7:28 PM ^
for a coach killer. Seems appropriate to me.
December 5th, 2010 at 7:24 PM ^
Oh my dad is going to be pissssed.
/NIUalum'd
But really, this is a good hire for Minny. Kill took over for Novak after ol' Joe kind of lost his touch the last three seaons. He has brought NIU back to their mid-powerish form and did quite a number on SIU too. Someone has to do a program revamp at Minnesota and he's a good coach. I don't like him going to a rival.
December 5th, 2010 at 7:25 PM ^
[insert Kill joke here]
December 5th, 2010 at 7:30 PM ^
ROFL...now that is a football name (same level as Glen Steele and Jarrette Irons).
December 5th, 2010 at 9:03 PM ^
Sam Sword and Rob Swett! The 96 Michigan defense could've been fake names inserted into a Nintendo football game without an NFL licensing agreement.
December 5th, 2010 at 7:30 PM ^
Not bad. Not my preference.
Oh well, he's my coach now. At least he's got a badass name. And at least he's not a goddamned NFL tight ends coach.
I still love you, Dread Pirate Captain.
December 5th, 2010 at 7:33 PM ^
NIU's poor performance against Miami (Not That Miami) the other day? I believe FEI had them at like a 96% win probability...perhaps the kids caught wind that their coach was heading off for greener pastures.
December 5th, 2010 at 7:39 PM ^
That certainly can and does happen. Thank you for this helpful bit of ammunition for combatting my own doubts.
December 5th, 2010 at 7:36 PM ^
Good choice, albeit boring. He does run a zone-read, which fits the bill for their QB/WR -like substance Grey.
December 5th, 2010 at 7:39 PM ^
the headline should be "Jheri Curl for the Gophers".
There's a big Prince revival going on in the Cities, donchayknow, ya hay dare.
December 5th, 2010 at 7:42 PM ^
what?
December 5th, 2010 at 7:53 PM ^
young. nevermind.
December 5th, 2010 at 8:40 PM ^
Ouch -- I'm old (enough) and I got it right away.
December 5th, 2010 at 8:00 PM ^
As long as he doesn't hire Morris Day to run the defense, I think we're still safe.
December 5th, 2010 at 8:29 PM ^
he doesn't run the Oak Tree defense.
We're all doomed.
December 5th, 2010 at 9:33 PM ^
put your hands in the air like you just don't care and say HAAYYYY
December 5th, 2010 at 7:52 PM ^
Jerry hit the Kill switch?
December 5th, 2010 at 7:58 PM ^
Sadly, Jimmy Maim was passed up for the job.

Now let's Kill Jerry!
December 5th, 2010 at 8:45 PM ^
Jerry thinks Minnesota kids are special.
/ducks, I'm sorry I couldn't resist I held out for over an hour.
December 5th, 2010 at 8:46 PM ^
Doesn't have the same ring to it as Kill Bill.
December 5th, 2010 at 8:49 PM ^
LOL at the Oak Tree reference.
Why can't GERG hire Jerome to hold the Mirror - so that he can pet his stuffed animal and admire his mane?

December 5th, 2010 at 10:22 PM ^
I think it's a good hire, this guy coached Garrett Wolfe, remember him?
December 5th, 2010 at 11:16 PM ^
but he didn't recruit him.
December 5th, 2010 at 11:27 PM ^
He neither recruited nor coached Garrett Wolfe. Wolfe graduated in 2006 while Kill's first year was 2008 at NIU.
