OT: The 68 "Coolest" People to Attend the Tournament Schools
SI created a list of the coolest people ever to attend the 68 schools in this years tournament. Some interesting people on the list for sure. Who knew that Bob Gibson HOF pitcher for the Cardinals played basketball at Creighton, or the Big Show from WWE fame played basketball at Wichita State?
Anyways it has Madonna as our "coolest" but I think that is very debatable.
Who do you think is the coolest person to attend, not necessarily graduate from Michigan is?
My choice has to be James Earl Jones or Gilda Radner outside of athletes that played here.

A school that has produced a President, Astronauts, and Super Bowl winning Quarterbacks "coolest" person is Madonna...what?

Don't forget this guy:

I think his real inluence came from his years at Harvard.
Agree. Whatever definition of cool you use or whatever generation you are in, I can’t think that having the quintessential exhibit A for sex symbol that Marilyn Monroe was as a wife wouldn’t qualify you for an upper echelon berth. Especially when you throw in the Pulitzer, plays, screenwriting, and New York and Hollywood “A list” parties he could attend.
Gilda Radner of Saturday Night Live fame, the inventor of the iPod, co-founder of Google.....
Coolest means many different things for different people. Madonna certainly wouldn't have been first on my list. However, it would be hard to argue against her being the most recognizeable across both genders and all cultures and generations.
Those commercials are awful.

You're kidding? Iggy Pop went to Michigan? Lust for Life, baby.

He sure did. He owned a record store in AA up until not too long ago.
I'm not sure there's a single one left in town anymore.

I went looking for a picture of Brian when we were undergrads and he had short hair and buttoned his flannel shirts. However, Google Image search is a finnicky mistress. I will see you all sometime next spring when I return from down south.
...on Twitter last night between Craig Barker (Yostal), BiSB, Raoul, Ace, me and others. Watch the Hoover Street Rag for a bracket event on this topic in the near future.
And, anyone who was married to Marilyn Monroe and penned two of the most acclaimed plays in the 20th century American theater pantheon gets my vote - Arthur Miller.

with a raging boner all the time? How could anybody possibly concentrate with Marilyn slinking around the apartment in a negligée?
March 19th, 2013 at 11:44 AM ^
If it helps, she was probably out with other guys the entire time
Claude Shannon
Arthur Miller for us....As for Temple, how the hell is Bob Sagat cooler than Bill Cosby?
March 19th, 2013 at 10:12 AM ^
Have you never seen Entourage?
March 19th, 2013 at 12:29 PM ^
I agree with all the Arthur Miller votes. I'd also submit Mike Wallace and Clarence "Kelly" Johnson.

The guy who oversaw the development of the SR-71 Blackbird gets the cool vote in my book.

CKJ is a legend in the aviation field and we did many studies on him and his aircraft designs at AFA. The guy is definitely cool among cool people.
Funny, and true, story about the SR-71...particularly, a crew getting checked out in the jet. Very entertaining. AND the epitome of cool.
I swear it's things like this are the best reason the internet was borne.
My question is how are there 5 cooler alumni than Hugh Hefner from Illinios? Seriously people. He should be number one.
March 19th, 2013 at 10:26 AM ^
Ken Jeong, lol. Apparently, he was a surgeon or something before quitting and going into comedy. Go figure.
But seriously, this list is stupid.

Had to stop reading when seeing Minnesota's was anyone other than Bob Dylan.

March 19th, 2013 at 11:46 AM ^
there is no indication that Bob Dylan ever went to a single class at Minnesota, although he was undoubtedly enrolled for a semester. So I agree he should have been excluded.
March 19th, 2013 at 12:40 PM ^
There are quite a few other drop outs on the list.
Jamie Lee Curtis apparently attended school for a semester and dropped out and made the list.

Jalen and Cweb.... i mean come on, CWeb dated Tyra Banks.

sleeping with sure, but dating? Ugghhhh
March 19th, 2013 at 10:58 AM ^
I feel like the list had no set criteria and the guy just selected whoever he liked personally. Because Bob Dylan went to Minnesota for a little bit and he should be #1, but he's not even Minnesota's selection. Brad Pitt cooler than Kurt Vonnegut? GTFO
March 19th, 2013 at 11:08 AM ^
I agree that Vonnegut belongs in at least the top 5 but Brad Pitt probably does as well. How are Hugh Hefner or James Dean not number 1 though?

In all seriousness....what about Raoul Wallenberg, Arthur Miller, Gerald Ford?
March 19th, 2013 at 11:29 AM ^
3 WWII vets deserve props...
Norman Mailer is (doubtless) very cool, but Jack Kennedy beats him at Harvard
Gregory Peck has nothing on mountaineer/environmentalist/combat vet David Brower at Cal
I'll stick with Miller for us, but Tom Harmon deserves a mention.

Sparty gets both Jim Harrison and Thomas McGuane...difficult to say...but true.
March 19th, 2013 at 12:04 PM ^
We also have Judge John Voelker....writer, MI supreme court justice, member fly fishing HOF. Charles Kuralt once described him as the most interesting man he'd ever interviewed. Cool.

I'm OK with Madonna. I wouldn't have chosen her myself, but her credentials are pretty impressive. She created what could loosely be called her own genre and became a giant in her industry. Her incorporation of dance and the way she leveraged videos to advance her career helped changed the face of music.
Madonna is "not my cup of tea," but her success in the music business certainly can't be denied. Not bad for someone who showed up with a dance scholarship.
