honestly, even though we (as a fanbase/blog/etc) might speculate on what happened or might happen in the future, only a few people (i.e. stonum, hoke, etc) know the entire story.
lets let the coach coach, and lets let the kid be coached.

Agreed. Hoke has shown with his initial (harsh) punishment that he is not a pushover like some coaches. Stonum's offense was imo not a huge deal, and it looks like he won't be hit very hard for it legally either. This is no reason to believe that he didn't learn his lesson about drunk driving from the first punishment, so long as he doesn't get in legal trouble again I have no problem with him staying on the team.

thankfully alcohol doesn't seem like it was involved again, otherwise i'm assuming hoke would've told him to clear out his locker by now.
i'm sure this won't come without its own price to stonum, though.

I've given this some thoughout the day. Obviously there is a lot we don't know here, but if Stonum needs to meet with his parole officer weekly or more, I can see where at some point you just miss-can't get - whatever- your ride. Even if he just got lazy on a cold winter morning and didn't want to run/bike I think I can forgive it. From what we know (limited) Hoke is doing a great job wiht encouraging his team to be good citizens. I have great faith that he will make a good decision here. Stonum has certainly been a model teammate since his enforced redshirt year (again, as far as we know). It would be a shame to screw it up by driving a car a couple miles to make a regular and necessary commitment.

I agree. The point of keeping him on the team was to try to get him to straighten out his life. It would be a shame to throw away all of his good work thus far and any in the future because of a stupid thing like this. At the same time, I feel like he has to be punished in some way and not kicking him off the team comes off as not holding Stonum to his end of the deal. In the end, the coaches have to do what they have to do. They know what is best for Stonum and the team. Whatever they decide is fine with me.

you give any excuse you want for him but he has broken the law more times in 2 years than most of us have in our lives. 1 time is a mistake,2 times is a step back and 3 times your a idiot that just doesn't know any better. if he stays on the team that's fine but I hope I don't see anyone on here slamming another program over a player breaking the law.

He was late for a parole appointment that he drive to instead of getting a ride or taking a bus, etc.

For one thing, he's on probation, not out of prison on parole.
Secondly, this isn't just showing up late for a probation appointment. He showed up late because he got a ticket. That ticket was for driving on a suspended/revoked license. That license is suspended/revoked because he has been convicted of drunk driving, and the state has deemed him not responsible enough to possess a license at this time. On top of that, he has been ordered by the court not to drive already. This is a problem. The court may take some mercy on him because it sounds like he's done alright on probation so far, but we can't treat this like it's not a big deal.
Also, the "Our players aren't robbing and assaulting people and raping women fergodsakes," quote just reeks of Terrelle Pryor-ishness. Pardon my french. But I would hope we could keep our standards higher in society than robbin' and rapin. Especially for our Michigan Men.

He showed up to probation apptmt. Probation officer asked how he got there. Presumably Stonum stumbled in making up some half-assed explanation about a girl dropping him off.
Police officer who is liaison to the sobriety court program followed him out, saw him get in car, and stopped him, busting him for the not-so-effective lie to his probation officer.

Uh, exactly how many UM students are getting $200,000 dollars to come to school and have been in trouble with the law this many times? Someone more deserving should get his scholarship. People keep saying "this isn't drunk driving..." well it was the SECOND TIME and he screwed up a THIRD time... 3 strikes in what, 2 years?!?!?! I've gotten one TICKET in my LIFE.

and I think he has done a damn fine job as UM head coach thus far. Just because I love the guy and think he has done a fine job doesn't mean I have to agree with everything he does though. People on this blog often blindly accept what the coaches do by stating things like you "if it's good enough for Hoke it's good enough for me...I trust the coaches" and that is their perogative but it doesn't make those who choose to think for themselves and adhere to their own standards and ethics selfrighteous pricks.
I am no saint and got into my fair share of trouble growing up. I would consider myself pretty understanding of kids making silly choices and forgiving them for those choices. What many of the people here are ignoring is that this is not Stonum's first and only offense.
Looked at in a vacuum it doesn't seem too bad...the kids drove without a licence, big deal. When you consider why he didn't have a licence it makes the deal much bigger IMHE. DS has 2 DUI's and I believe has already had a probation violation and perhaps been caught driving without a licence once before as well. I may be wrong on but that is how I remember the long list of offenses he has.
This paints a picture of a young man who has not taken responsibility for his actions and hasn't learned from his mistakes. The law is the law and DS has broken those laws numerous times over the past 2 years. Whether you think the laws or stupid or not is irrelevant, they are the laws that society has set forth and we as citizens are expected to follow.
I hate to say this because I think we really need DS on this team next year if want a good chance and a great season, but IMHE he should not be on the team. If I was the coach and had a player who did the same things there is no possible way I could justify him remaining on the team.
I won't lose a lot of respect for Hoke if he doesn't toss DS, but I won't agree with the decision either.

He should be gone. He in no way should have a fifth chance, especially when 2 of the offenses were serious and the other two showed a blatant and continuing disregard for the law. I hope Hoke comes to his senses and establishes some discipline on the team.
