My Two Cents on This Season and Rich Rodriguez

Submitted by M16 on

OK, I've been on the RR hate bandwagon since the Penn State loss. However, I've taken a breath and cooled off a bit.

I think we may be in good shape at Michigan. Since the State game it's been three bad bad weeks. But we all no how this sport is, it's up and down, sentiments change quickly. We're favored in the next two games. We'll be dogs in the following two. If the season plays out in that manner, plus a bowl game, we will either be 8-5 or 7-6. Our Big Ten record will be 3-5. I think this would be enough, considering the potential we have, to stay the course.

What would make this decision really easy would be an upset of Wisco or OSU and/or a bowl win. I think people underestimate how possible these things are. Yes our defense is horrible, but all it would take would be a couple opportune fumbles or interceptions and we could be in any one of those games.

I don't know. I'm going back and forth. But after cooling off I'm going into this Illinois game cautiously optimistic.

You probably shouldn't. That's why, when a thread is titled something to the effect of "My thoughts on the program and RichRod" you shouldn't click on it. It's a simple concept that I use regularily. If the thread is titled something I don't care to read, then I don't click on it. It just seems like a reasonable practice.

Well, since I never said I had a problem with the thread, your post has no relevance to mine. I said you shouldn't care. I said you shouldn't click on it because that is what I do when I see a thread that I don't think I will care about. I said nothing about my opinion on the this particular thread. Also, if you are looking to not read about the future of the program and things of that sort, you should probably hit up TMZ or something else unrelated to Michigan.

The issue, as I see it, is not that the author gives his two cents as is indicated by the title, but rather that those two cents are the exact opinion espoused by pretty much everyone on the por-RR/pro-"wait-till-the-end-of-the-year" crowd. I click on a thread because I feel it may contain new information, new insight, or at least an original thought. This post, however, does not.

If the thread was titled "My two cents (hint: they're the same as everyone else's)", I would not click on it.

To me, the issue is the long term health of the program. RR will eventually bring this thing around, and the alternative -- which is to switch regimes again -- would be catasrophic. And while the defense is obviously ridiculously young, I think a young(er?), more charismatic defensive coordinator might be needed pretty quickly.

this thing will turn around. The offense is potent and the defense has been riddled with injury and defections. If this team were bad on both sides of the ball AND there was no injuries or defections, then I would say let the firing begin. I think RR deserves another year for the team to grow and mend.

You are right that the real issue is the long term health of the program. However I think that you might be wrong about the catastrohic results of replacing our current regime. We had a old school team and an old school regime. When RR came we had a mass exodus due to the clash of old and new. If we were to bring in a new regime I think the transition would go quite smoothly. A good coach can win with what they have. I don't know who we could get to replace RR so I don't know if replacing him is the answer, but I think that after 3 years, we the fans should have higher hopes than " We might be able to make the Little Ceasars' Bowl"

I'm with you to the fact that I have cooled off from my emotional rant a couple days ago. I would agree that anything can happen the next 4 weeks, but I will say I have absolutely no confidence in this defense to be able to stop anything the remainder of the season.

As I do feel we have a chance to win any of the remaining games, I'm finding it hard to believe it will actually happen. Here's to hoping I'm worng.

My two cents. I am tired of everyone's opinion of RR but those who have the power to ACTUALLY fire him. They have the only opinion that matters.

You were doing fine with this witty retort and I was well on my way to the up arrow. Then I saw the "NOT" at the bottom. Snark loses its snark when you have to resort to '80's buzz words. That, and explaining that you were being sarcastic when it's obvious to all but the densest of readers kills it, too.

he said all along it was about momentum

offense is trending up and the defense is trending down

so pick 1 and you have your answer

doesn't really matter b/c no one knows what DB is thinking anyways

BCS/NCAA/Big10 Bylaws mandate the following tiebreakers:

 • Results of a head to head match-up of the Offense v. Defense in a scrimmage
 • Overall ranking of Offense vs Defense, nationally
 • Overall ranking of Offense vs Defense, Big10
 • Coin Flip
 • Ineligibles
 • Random Number Generator

I, like everyone else, am tired of this topic. David Brandon has said a number of times that there is no W's # that will or will not signal the end of the RR era. So why is everyone so intent on saying we Have to win this game or that game? We have to play better, we have to look like a program that is still making progress. With the D that UM has, that could be holding any of hte teams we have left to play to 30 or even 40. It could be our O rolling up big numbers in 4 losses. Nodody but brandon knows. We all will soon enough.

No better yet.. Jump out a window

Can we get a mod lock on any thread saying "my 2 cents" or "why we should hire/fire x coach"

That would be great...

Why you jerk? Who are you to determine which UM fans are allowed to voice their support on a beloved UM fan site? Everyone's voice matters. If I see 100 small negative threads, I'm glad to see guys like this offering one of hopefully 100 positive threads trending in the other direction. Step off your MGoPoints ePeen.

I hope he sticks around for a long time...........if Oregon, Florida and several other big programs can have success, there is no reason it can't work at MI........we're just missing some key components right now like a kicker that can kick straight and LB's that flow to the ball correctly....oh yeah, and tackling.

I picked 7-5 in August and a win this weekend most likely gets us there..........the problem with this team is the volatility in getting to its current state.............this MI team is like a low volume penny stock, it's all over the place, big moves up and then it comes crashing down unexpectedly...........crazy.

Why are there not 2 sticky threads: FIRE RR NO MATTER WHAT and NEVER FIRE RR NO MATTER WHAT. Someone mentioned this the other day and I think it would make the mods job easier. Maybe not, but it would be less annoying.

Listen to yourself you soft pansy. Is the structure of your universe capsizing because God forbit there isn't sufficient order on the MGBoard re posts pro v con RR? Seriously, get a life, or better yet, get a new team to root for.

with an "M16" avatar, but Michigan is going to finish 6-6 this year, not 8-5.

Illinois is good enough to win Saturday in the Big House, and they probably will. If anything, they have a fantastic RB, QB and PK. Defensively: Martez Wilson.

Purdue is going to lose to Michigan big because the Boilermaker offense is completely impotent (something Michigan has not encountered all season long).

Wins over Wisconsin and Ohio State are Peter Pan-fantasies given the way Michigan's defense is current configured. I'm not saying Michigan will be blown out, but I think people should mentally brace themselves for defeats by 2 touchdowns at least in both of these games.

...the more I believe Brandon won't fire RR this year even if we lose out.

Why, you ask?

Because this is Brandon's first year. He's still getting his feet wet in the new job and with the NCAA sanctions fiasco and other contentious issues, he won't want to throw another controversial decision on top of the M bonfire.

So now, my quarter says RR stays until after 2011 no matter what.

You might be right, but my counter to that is he would have already extended him if that is what he is set on. The mystery is harming recruiting. Brandon knows it too.

My speculation is he must have a really good reason: he isn't sure and wants to see what we do against quality opponents the last 4 games. So far, we haven't done much but roll up a bunch of yards in psuedo-garbage time.

What if during the press release today regarding the NCAA decisions Brandon publicly gives RR and extension. It would be great for recruiting and the team spirits. I know it is crazy but it would be interesting.
