I remember when we couldn't fill up Crisler. Our basketball team sucked, student sections were empty, and even with general admission, the arena didn't fill up until halftime. Cheap tickets and free food incentives didn't really do much.
Then our basketball team got good. We expanded the student section to a second lower bowl, and then we filled up several upper deck sections. Ticket prices increased, but Crisler still sold out. Even crappy games like Nebraska had great attendance.
I honestly don't care about RAWK, ads, expensive food, or racking up points to get a free T-shirt. If I'm going to leave my HDTV, beer, and warm house to watch a game in person, there's got to be something good on the field. Put a good football team on the field, and you'll get the students to show up, pay hundreds of dollars, and stay for the whole game.

It's Friday, the weather doesn't suck, and there's a 6-pack of Bell's Brown in my fridge. 2014 is going to be awesome.

MSU played like they wanted to win, and they went 13-1 and won the Rose Bowl. Your move, Dave Brandon.

I believe that Dave Brandon values money more than antiquated culture. He knows wins = money, and he'll do what he has to do to get those wins. If Dave Brandon truly wants fans to continue to buy tickets, heads will roll soon. We'll see just how much Dave Brandon values money.

If this is Michigan football, we need to reconsider who we are as a program and a culture.

I think all of the B1G head coaching jobs are safe, assuming Eichorst is being truthful about keeping Pelini for another year. Looking at the power conferences, I think Washington and Texas are the mostly likely to fire their coaches, leaving open two very nice spots. Charlie Strong is itching to jump to a bigger program, and I think Texas gives him the nod. Narduzzi could replace Strong at Louisville.

I'm just sick and tired of getting outcoached in every game. We should be the ones outcoaching or find someone who can.

Get rid of Borges and look to Stanford's coordinators. If Shaw leaves for the NFL as many predict, he's got some staff that might be looking for a new home. Wouldn't mind looking to more pass-happy spread offenses like Oklahoma State or Texas Tech for coordinators either. Key is the new OC has to be aggressive and adaptive, two traits I don't really see in Borges.

The Music School has been in a big fundraising campaign for the past several years, with some focus on the MMB and some on the North Campus facilities. Once that is done, there might be some money for funding more away trips. With ND off of the schedule, that frees up one away trip right there.
Then again, maybe we use that money to renovate Revelli.

I think we'll see a 4-5 year stop on expansion, at least as long as MD is in court with the ACC. How that goes will determine the future of the conferences. I get the feeling that the ACC is going to lose this one, but a lot can happen.
I could see the B1G trying to pick up Mizzou (no GoR in SEC) and Kansas when the Big 12 GoR is up, if only to get to 16. Otherwise, I think we'll wait until it's economically viable to get GTech or UVA.

Vandy and Missouri would be great additions, particularly now that the ACC has locked its doors. OU is meh in my mind, though it would make a nice rival for Nebraska. KU would be better, AAU and all and another Big 8 rival for Nebraska.

I've always liked the guy. He's got the credentials for sure, and having been with the band for the last 5 years, it makes sense for him to take over. Should be a good fit.

Still a little early to call it, but if he does well at USF and Borges doesn't work out, it might be a worthwhile investment. I'd prefer someone a little more established (like Stanford's OC), but if Sheridan is the rising star, we should get him before someone else does.

There was talk of joining the A-10 for a 21-team league. Somehow they were thinking of having two 10-team divisions, but no one mentions who they'd leave out.

TN is a toxic job right now. Dooley brought them down farther than they were before, who knows what kind of players are left, and there's clearly a lot of pressure to succeed early. Hopefully they hire someone who doesn't wear ridiculous orange pants.
|1 year 14 weeks ago||Yeah, I was stuck in that||
Yeah, I was stuck in that line until 4 minutes after tipoff. You'd think they'd add another entrance for the students during big games, or at least another scanner. Here's hoping they figure something out by conference season.
|1 year 15 weeks ago||The problem with division||
The problem with division setup is that you force teams to play each other every that may not need to--e.g. Michigan and Northwestern. I like the pod system because it only forces you to keep the teams you must play every year. It reminds me of the pre-2011 setup where you had two protected rivals and everyone else rotated through.

A home-and-home with Hawaii would make a lot of sense, mainly for the extra home game. It would also be a great trip for the players. I'm not convinced they're going to be 2007 amazing, but I think they'll have a decent enough offense to give us trouble.
|1 year 29 weeks ago||I give it 3 years before they||
I give it 3 years before they go to FCS. They'd probably have to have 7-8 away games just to keep the revenue coming in; what school would want to play at Idaho?
|1 year 29 weeks ago||Rodriguez will struggle this||
Rodriguez will struggle this year, as he always does, if for no other reason than learning the spread and the 3-3-5 always takes time. Fortunately for him, Arizona is patient. There's no question the guy is an offensive genius, and I think that Oregon-Arizona games are going to be real exciting in about 3 years.

You can tell how nervous he was giving that speech.
|1 year 32 weeks ago||He's certainly an improvement||
He's certainly an improvement over Bill Martin, who other than the coaching search debacle was a decent AD. The fact of the matter is that to compete with schools like USC, Oregon, Alabama, LSU, and OSU, we've got to focus on bringing in money and talent. Old school Schembechler approaches just don't work anymore, and it's time to come to the 21st century. Now, I'm not saying we need advertisements in the stadium, but focusing on revenue growth has to be an important part of our athletic department if we want to compete.

I like us at 12, but if conference realignment is going to happen, here's what I see/would like:
I see FSU and VT going to the Big 12 soon. ACC either stays at 12 or picks up UConn and Louisville to compensate. Big East picks up a few more C-USA teams.
ND finally capitulates and joins the B1G. I think we can steal Missouri from the SEC if this happens; they clearly want to be in the B1G, and accepted an SEC invitation as a backup. They'd fit really well, especially with Nebraska and Illinois. Boost to both football and basketball. I'd be really hesitant to move beyond 14, even for UVA.
|1 year 43 weeks ago||To echo a lot of what has||
To echo a lot of what has been said here, Stanford would be a good matchup. Do a home-and-home for 2014-2015, take 2016 off (or schedule a big mid-major at home like Boise State), then start 2017 with the original plan.
