Morgan Trent?

Submitted by Enjoy Life on
So, I'm minding my own business watching the Cincinnati/Chicago game on Sunday and I hear this strange name being called for the Bengals. Yup, Morgan Trent is playing in the NFL! As a CB. Whoda-thunkit?

Michigan is producing top level players. It seems like everytime i watch a NFL sunday or Monday night game I see them play. Henne and long for dolphins, edwards and harris jets, manningham giants, woodley steelers, alan branch had 2 sacks for cardinals last night breston is also a really solid player for the cardinals too. Its to bad that we couldnt win the NC in 2006. we had all these players on this team.

Yeah I noticed that to. He's playing better at the end of his career then when he was in his athletic prime. Injuries and Al Harris getting him balls probably has a lot to do with this. But seriously he's 33 now. Maybe not in running back years but he's getting up there in years and still competing at a high level. I love it.

Had a really good game against Florida in Capital One Bowl, showed incredible recovery speed from across the field and caught Percy Harvin, just inconsistent, a lot like Marlon Jackson.... and Leon Hall... and D Warren. I'm seeing a developing theme here.

I would have thunk it. Morgan Trent got a bad rap at Michigan. He had a pretty good 2007 and then Shafer and the other defensive coaches went retarded and made him regress. Last year's defensive shortcomings are the fault of Shafer, Rodriguez, and the other defensive coaches. Shafer's schemes sucked and the other coaches didn't agree on how to play defense. Trent was just a bystander in the debacle.

you'd find that 95% of the people on this blog would agree that Shafer was a terrible hire and that can be put on RR. But you being a hater and taking little shots at people like a asshat and putting stupid shit like your PS removes all credibility from your posts. Like Magnus said, Trent was a good CB in 2007 when he knew the scheme and was allowed to play fast. In 2008, he was asked to play way off receivers and not be as aggressive and caught alot of flack for it.

There is no RichRod Kool Aid, Fitty Cent. When you go from a traditional pro-style offense to a spread offense and change defensive coordinators twice in the first two years of your tenure, there is going to be some growing pains. Throw in the molotov cocktails from Rosenberg and a few disgruntled former players whining, and you will have a tough time getting the Michigan machine turning over and running at full speed right away. RichRod should be afforded the time and patience of the Michigan faithful to get his vision of where the team is going off the ground. Instead, we have drones like you who refuse to factor in the aforementioned variables and see only the win column. He needs a few years to develop the talent he recruits. Look at the promise we have already with Tate and Denard, Odoms and Shaw. Our quarterbacks just had homecoming at their high schools 1 year ago, for God's sake. We are starting at least two walk-ons and the majority of our team is underclassmen. Take a breather, eat a star crunch, and just READ Brian's posts for awhile to learn a thing or two about the huge transition that is taking place with Michigan football. It will be good for all of us.

Trent was by all accounts a good guy, a hard worker, and smart. He kicked the combine's ass (he was the strongest DB in the draft, and close to the top in speed and agility). He has played one decent year as a CB (2007) a mediocre one (2006) and a poor one (2008), the poor one possibly due to coaching changes. He was also pretty new to the position. I'm not surprised he's doing well.

I lost respect for Morgan Trent when I saw his name come up in Rosenterds article. I didnt expect it from him either. I thought he was a good soldier last year, even through the 3-9 season.

I remember being surprised by how well he played in the begining of 2006, until the injured hand or whatever. The only thing he did that drove me crazy was never looking for the ball when it was in the air. He would have great position but never get his head around. Too bad we don't have him this year because one of his strengths was playing off the reciever and snuffing out the quick short passes for little gain.

I'm glad Morgan is getting some PT in the NFL. Good for him. BUT all this hind-sight on his career is a little too rosey. Has everyone forgotten about him getting detroyed every time he was matched up against a top WR? For example, how about his day against USC in the 2007 rose bowl?

But the way he got owned was really ugly and that wasn't the first or last time it occured. The thing that always got to me about him was the constant hype he would recieve as a "shut down corner" and an "All-American candidate." Of which, he is neither. Solid probably, AA caliber- no way. What are your thoughts on MT, Magnus?

I don't know... I never heard him referred to as a shut-down corner or an All-American candidate, at least not from anyone whose opinion I respect. I always thought he would make a better NFL safety than corner. He's fast, but he doesn't have the hips to be a great NFL corner. That's why I think he'd be good at playing center field in the NFL. He also turned into a pretty solid tackler in his last couple years at Michigan. So if he's playing slot corner, where he can blitz occasionally, support the run a little bit, and doesn't have to worry about turning and running with receivers as much, then I think he can last for a bit in the NFL.

I can't recall Trent being called a shutdown corner or a potential All-Americam at any point in his career. He was, briefly, in 2007, thought to be our best CB. Then Warren started playing. For the vast majority of his time, he was always regarded as the second-best corner. Perhaps you're thinking of Leon Hall?

Here are the stats for Morgan Trent (U/M History): Ranks #16 in Pass Break Ups with 16 Ranks #19 in Interceptions with 7 Ranks #82 in Total Tackles with 149 Pretty meh. As far as I can tell there are no stats on being torched. His stats were virtually the same for 2006, 7, and 8. No drop off in RR and staff's first year.

Aw, come on now. He was a 3 year starter, played one year w/ a broken hand, that would kind of hamper your ability to make INT's. He wasn't the 2nd coming of Charles Woodson but it's not like he was awful either. If he wasn't any good then he wouldn't have been drafted by the Bengals to begin with. http://www.nfl.com/draft/2009/profiles/morgan-trent?id=81310
