Molk goes off on Konz and Brewster
Didn't see this up here, and the title says it all, but a couple enjoyable tidbits from the ESPN/Ann Arbor News post:
In an interview with AnnArbor.com, the Rimington Trophy winner says it's "pretty stupid" to think any other center should be drafted ahead of him, including Wisconsin's Peter Konz and Ohio State's Mike Brewster.
Molk also doesn't believe that Ohio State's Brewster, a four-year starter and 2010 All-American, should be drafted higher than him. "He is nowhere near me as a player," he said of Brewster.
Awesome.

his balls into the locker room?

HOW DOES DANNY HART SIT DOWN WITH BALLS THAT BIG?!
February 29th, 2012 at 12:27 PM ^
Can't buy underwear, balls are too big.

Well, Ted is correct to be worried as long as you ignore all the commits that Hoke and his staff of magical recruiting wizards have.
February 29th, 2012 at 3:23 PM ^
I'm onto your games, Ted.
February 29th, 2012 at 11:49 AM ^
I love Molk. But he should keep those opinions to himself. It's tacky.
February 29th, 2012 at 11:58 AM ^
At this point, he is the very top dog. He has outworked everybody the past few years, and beaten them all. He can say that about Konz and Brewster, because he IS better than them. Now, as soon as he gets drafted, it's back to shutting up and letting the f***** field prove it.
February 29th, 2012 at 12:36 PM ^
He isn't going vocal because he's top dog. It's because he is legitimately being undervalued. Not tacky when he sees a problem and is wanting to call attention to it.
February 29th, 2012 at 1:27 PM ^
Unless he's Peyton Manning, I think comments like that would hurt someones draft stock.
I do think Molk is much better, he's done nothing but prove it on the field and in the combine. I don't get why NFL teams and scouts still think size matters, they've been proven wrong more so than not.
February 29th, 2012 at 2:03 PM ^
just because he won the rimington doesn't mean he's entitled to being the first center picked any more than RG3 winning the heisman entitles him to being the #1 overall pick. Brewster may very well fit another program better in terms of style, finnesse, and overall size (he is 3 inches taller and 20 pounds heavier).
February 29th, 2012 at 2:09 PM ^
Yeah, but if it were Brewster saying this would ou have a problem with it?
February 29th, 2012 at 3:18 PM ^
Yes, because it wouldn't be true.
February 29th, 2012 at 12:15 PM ^
I semi-agree but there is something to be said - especially in that profession - for absolute and unwaivering confidence.
Tom Brady once walked up to Mr. Kraft (as a 6th round draft pick) and said "I am the best move you've ever made." Well, that's about as ballsy as you can get and in that job it's often times a very good thing to have. Most of all I think Molk and Brady were just being themselves and that is all I ever ask of anybody.
February 29th, 2012 at 12:26 PM ^
Confidence, great. General assertions that you think no one is better, fine. But basically denegrating other players -- B10 players, no less -- is not great. I'm sure Carr and Hoke are slapping their foreheads right now.
February 29th, 2012 at 12:58 PM ^
After watching some of the film of Molk and Martin working out at BM I am not sure Molk could have said anything other than what he did. It's a programming that goes on to even get through those workouts. I'm not sure Molk said the other centers are shit. I just think he said if anyone were to pick them over him they would be stupid. After what that kid has done I wouldn't disagree with him.
Given all that I think Molk goes to the Pats late because his skill set is something very valuable to that team and not so much to many others, meaning the Pats know they can wait on him. He is a reach blocker and an exceptional one. Many teams don't want/need that in a center.

I'm sure they all worked hard, but if you haven't seen the results then you haven't been watching the combine. Mike, David and JT outperformed where they "should" have gone and made people take a look at them. Could speak to the individuals, but 3 for 3 would speak more to the training in my opinion.
David did the second most bench reps in the entire combine.
Mike was in the top 3 in every DL category.
JT ran a 4.5 second 40 AND was the fastest WR in two of the agility/speed drills. A few GMs said they wouldn't even look at him before the combine. Now he may go in the 2nd-3rd round.
After those results I would say Barwis is great at what he does and programs these guys to know they are the best at their position. That may explain (not justify) what David had to say.
February 29th, 2012 at 1:28 PM ^
February 29th, 2012 at 1:45 PM ^
Mike was top 5 in every category compared to defensive tackles, not all defensive linemen. But point taken.
February 29th, 2012 at 2:04 PM ^
February 29th, 2012 at 2:08 PM ^
You're correct. Still, 2 out of 2.
February 29th, 2012 at 11:47 PM ^
Yeah, but you lose massive credibility (in the argument; not generally) with that slip-up. Hemingway was the one that had me in your court, opinion-wise. I think you can argue that MM and DM were both top-5 at their positions, easily, in CFB last year, so testing athletically in that range, while good, isn't necessarily shocking. Junior Hemingway's numbers at the combine, to me, were far more surprising.

"just being themselves and that is all I ever ask of anybody."
When comments like this are made, I always try to think how I would feel in the exact opposite scenario -- if Molk was at OSU and Brewster at UM -- and the comments were made.
I'd probably say, "meh", and chalk it up to confidence and the right attitude for a competitor who is clearly very good.
February 29th, 2012 at 2:32 PM ^
if he told Kraft: "You're an idiot if you don't play me over Bledsoe."
February 29th, 2012 at 1:27 PM ^
You want to see confidence, but there's a non-offensive way to communicate it. Molk's candor is always amusing for a fan, but when you start insulting your peers and potential employers, it doesn't reflect well on Michigan football or anyone. \
I blame Rich Rodriguez /s.
It'll be interesting to see what the NFL talent-evaluators think of Molk v. Konz on draft day (and beyond, obviously.)
February 29th, 2012 at 11:50 AM ^
Probably not the best things to be saying at this point even if that is what he believes. Love him to death, but he comes off as a dick.
February 29th, 2012 at 1:15 PM ^
i can't say i like the comments either. but if buy saying them he gets just one GM to listen and draft him many spots higher than his projections, that means extra millions of dollars to him.
imo, he's basically acting as his own agent.
February 29th, 2012 at 11:50 AM ^
This thread will be interesting.
Michigan player says this == AWESOME
Another team's player says this == ASS
February 29th, 2012 at 11:57 AM ^
Yeah, I'm excited for this. Hopefully it stays reasonably civil.
If Brewster would have said the same thing last year (when he got the All-America nod), the board would have crucified him.
February 29th, 2012 at 11:58 AM ^
Not to mention that NFL teams might see this as a potential locker room problem waiting to happen. Which is funny since we know what a great locker room guy he was at Michigan but still, these types of comments engender that type of cognitive response.
February 29th, 2012 at 3:38 PM ^
Isn't that true about most everything though?
Hoke takes a dig at Ohio: "WOOOOOOOOOO! YEAH! MOTHERFUCKIN PARTY! HOKE'S THE MAN! HE SHITS GOLD! HOKE! HOKE! HOKE!"
Urban takes a dig at Michigan: "BURN HIM! CAST HIM INTO THE FIRES OF MOUNT DOOM!"
February 29th, 2012 at 7:44 PM ^
has Hoke taken a dig at Ohio?
February 29th, 2012 at 11:51 AM ^
I love his confidence and mentality, but wonder if GM's might worry about his personality in the locker room, especially if he's not seeing the field.
February 29th, 2012 at 12:27 PM ^
I would like someone with that much confidence and intensity on my team. His play will back up his talk. All-American, Rimington award winner, and his performance at the combine was better than both of Konz and that fat fuck from Ohio. Oh, and Molk is 3-4 inches shorter and outweighed by over 20+ pounds. I'll take Molk any day.
February 29th, 2012 at 11:55 AM ^
I agree its a concern when you hear some ocmments like this- but its about character and determination.
If its a comment made due to entitlement or animosity, or just ego thats an issue
If its a comment made because you are legitimately a top player with great effort and incredible determination- it is better.
It's really just a bad way of saying something like: "Any GM who takes one of these guys over me will regret it" which we hear a lot.
Tru- you have to be careful about how you make your comments- and how they may be heard- but I don't find an issue with the comment.
February 29th, 2012 at 11:50 PM ^
It doesn't necessarily mean you should say it. That being said, I can understand why he said it.
February 29th, 2012 at 11:55 AM ^
when Mike Hart is the coach in 2024, Molk should be his OL coach. his obnoxious statements to the media will then be turned into a coors light commercial.
February 29th, 2012 at 1:07 PM ^
First of all, are we really going to assume that Hoke is going to be gone in 12 years? He'll only be 64 then. Second, as much as I love what Mike Hart brought onto the field as a player, I don't think I'd ever want him to be HC at Michigan.
February 29th, 2012 at 3:27 PM ^
I'm curious as to why you wouldn't want Mike Hart as HC? He seems to be a pretty good leader and is well respected in the football community.
Shed some light. I don't disagree; I'm just interested why you think this way.
February 29th, 2012 at 4:55 PM ^
Well, I'm going to be completely candid and therefore probably marked as either flamebaiting or trolling. And since you did say you don't disagree, I'm interested in hearing your opionion as well.
I've never really liked how he interviews or how he comes off in interviews. From "little brother" to his "Michigan man" tiff with Harbaugh to his "I don't cheer for Michigan anymore". While I understand the mentality behind all the statements they don't come out right when he speaks. In the end, he comes off looking really arrogant or really dickish. I don't give him the benefit of "being young" since he's older than I am.
Even if he did learn to think before speaking, he always came off as a "hey look at me"/"I'm awesome" person and not as much of a "the team" person. I think that he could potentially divide the fan base if he ever became HC based on just his personality. And if he doesn't learn to think before he speaks, his personality + a lot of the words out of his mouth would piss a lot of people off.
It probably takes awhile to perfect the guarded-charming gibberish coach speak that Hoke has (yes, I did use the term perfect) or the amusing-condescending closed off coach speak that Carr had. But there was always a foundation of heart and humility in both. A "clear eyes, full hearts" quality if you will.
But this discussion does lead to an interesting question of, where does Michigan turn when Hoke leaves? He was probably one of the younger people from the Bo-Mo-Lloyd tree with additional roots to Woody. Dude has a history that's going to be hard pressed to find in the future. Unless Michigan loosens up in the future, we're in for a crazy ride in 15 years or so.
February 29th, 2012 at 2:35 PM ^
He's quietly paying his dues and working his way up. Hart may have to redshirt behind him.
February 29th, 2012 at 11:56 AM ^
Does anyone know what d-lineman wanted out of a game so they didn't have to play against Molk? If thats true, its kinda awesome, but I don't remember a specific incidence or report about this.
February 29th, 2012 at 11:56 AM ^
I'm fine with him thinking that. I think he's proven that he's better than him, but he's a guy who doesn't need to talk-up how great he is. Just let your on-field performance do the talking for you and if those guys get drafted ahead of you, show those teams they were wrong.
February 29th, 2012 at 12:05 PM ^
I can understand David Molk being upset that inferior competitors may be drafted several rounds above him. His starting salary is directly related to his draft position. He knows that his initial deal may be the only pro football money he ever sees, because of the high probability of injury. Its not a very fair system and he earned the right to be the first center drafted this year, based upon all the national recognition he received.
February 29th, 2012 at 12:11 PM ^
I'm sorry, but you don't "earn the right" to be drafted first at your position based on awards. NFL teams will draft who they think will be the best pros. It's no more unfair than you and me not being drafted.
February 29th, 2012 at 4:19 PM ^
Molk just wants everybody to know that he's top shelf, while these other centers are only top ramen.
February 29th, 2012 at 11:58 AM ^
This is very unlike him. He's usually pretty bullish in interviews but always tactful about the things he says about other teams and players.
