Michigan's Devin Gardner: I'll make sure Brady Hoke isn't on hot seat

Submitted by Ron Utah on

What a great way to answer the question.

Everybody is going to say whatever they want to say,” Gardner said. “My job is to make sure he’s not on the hot seat, so that’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to make sure we win football games, and I’m going to play as hard as I can with my teammates, and I’m going to encourage my teammates, and my teammates are going to encourage me, and we’re going to make sure that’s not even the talk anymore.

I can't believe this is his last year.

I remember seeing him come out onto the field for the first time at the 2010 spring game and the place was loud.

You're getting hammered for this but I stand with you. The entire idea of the legends uniforms was/is kind of dumb. I'd rather have a guy become legendary in his own number rather than try to live in the past, which is the most Michigan thing you can do.

Well they wanted to unretire the jerseys and its a nice way to memorialize the individuals who had their jerseys retired.

Is it slightly annoying to have to buy a new jersey if your favorite player switches, or to have to remember a new number for the first few games? yeah a little (mostly remembering for me since i dont buy many jerseys).

Guys already had to live up to the standard anyways. #1/#2 arent legends jerseys but everybody is worrying about who will be the next #1 and trying to give it to every studbolt freshman they want to recruit. Being 77 on the oline has a long history too. Its all unspoken but it exists at least in my opinion.

When was the last time there was a serious dialogue on this or any other site about Tom Harmon, since Devin's # change?

The man is an American Hero, and he's ours.  And the fact that we can celebrate him again is a stroke of Dave Brandon genius (if that's truly where credit goes). If his family  is ok (and the were), then dammit, let's watch Ol' 98 tear it up again.

My 13 year old son knows all about #98 (and #21, etc.) from the Legends pregram, and it makes me proud to see him read up and research who these men were and what they've meant to Michigan Football.

Yeah, long-term I wish they'd handle the whole thing a little different, but I'm all for having Kramer, Ford, Howard et al back in circulation.

Bando, you're one of my very favorite posters, FYI, but you're underwater on this one.

are far more closely tied to their legacy than they would be from viewing a dusty old jersey behind a piece of glass. DG has a Tom Harmon clipping from the Harmon family's personal collection. He has Mark Harmon's number in his contact list. How often did those things happen before the current program was instituted?

Devin could be in the running for the most overrated award in sports (Heisman) if he has a good offensive line.

What a perfect response and EXACTLY what you want your senior QB to say.  I love it.

Reminded me of back in 86 when Harbaugh "guarenteed" Michigan would go down to Columbus and win the game.  When they asked Bo if he liked hearing his Quarterback say that Bo responded to the effect of "I like it a Hell of lot more than if my Quarterback had guarenteed we'd LOSE this week."

He guaranteed a win over OSU last year before the season started and while Michigan didn't win that game, he put up huge numbers and was one play away from coming through on his promise despite suffering an injury. This is his last year on campus and he was in some really heated battles last season against quality opponents. This year will be different, it will be a good year for him and the team as a whole. Nuss will remind us what it's like to have an efficient offense against teams with a pulse.

Didn't he make other "guarantee" type statements that didn't pan out? I love DG, but I thought he said some things before last season.

So what you're saying is... Devin can't predict the future 100% accurately and that upsets you? This wasn't an "I promise I'll take out the garbage today" kind of guarantee.

Question... Would you rather have him say something to the effect of "I don't know what will happen but I will try to make sure we win" or would you rather have him show confidence and drive with a "guarantee" being that he has more control over the offensive performance than any other player on the field?

The thing about that "guarantee" with the win over OSU last year told me that this dude is going to do everything he can to win. You don't guarantee something will happen without doing your best to give it your all because you know the risks of what you're saying. Watching that game, I have no doubt in my mind Devin gave it his all. I honestly couldn't believe he was still going at the end of that game - It was a remarkable game for him.

Him making claims to push Hoke off the hot seat tells me that he is working really freaking hard to improve and make this offense the best it can be. Therefore, I LIKE.

I'm just saying that maybe he should change "guarantees" to "try my hardest". Making guarantees in sports will usually end poorly for you. I like #98 a lot, so I'm not trying to find reasons to bash him. I'm just pointing out that he's made guarantees in the past, and it didn't work. That's all.

Haters are gonna do their thing... If we're competing for a B10 Championship in November all the Devin naysayers and *fans calling for a QB with 1 collegiate start to take over will either be on the bandwagon or have to shut up. Devin is a class act, I hope he encounters much success this year and beyond.

Talk is often worthless or even harmful, IMHO, but Michigan needs some vocal confidence right now.  If nothing else, I think DG will leave Michigan having done everything he could to get the Wolverines back to the top.
