Meta: MGoBlog is running better appreciation thread
I know Brian et al. take a lot of crap at times for 502 errors and app issues, but I also think it's worth noting that the site is much faster over the past few days, and the app problem was fixed. Brian mentioned that bots were causing a lot of the frustration with 502 errors. So thanks to Brian, his brother, the app developer, and whoever else put time into getting some of those problems worked out. Michigan had a basketball game and rumors flying around about Tyrone Wheatley, Jr., and I haven't encountered one 502 error.

True, but it took much, much less to cause 502 errors lately.

Hmmmmm.
OK, more than $2 billion was spent on the HealthCare.gov website, including some of the best programmers in the world and all the highest-speed servers on the planet, and it crashed because of excessive traffic.
Want to say, "awwww, government sucks" to explain that? Walmart is the world's largest retailer with $100s of billion in revenue annually. It can spend anything it wants on its website. And that website is notoriously terrible, crashing during peak usage all the time.
My point? Shit happens, and when you consider we get BOTH access to this site AND all the content for free, there is nothing to complain about here...

Comparing Walmart to MgoBlog is apples to oranges.
A better analogy would be taking the pipe from a crackhead. If the site is down you'll get the news eventually, but you need it now!
January 15th, 2017 at 7:22 PM ^
My point was: Massive organizations with virtually unlimited resources have a tough time keeping a website running during high-traffic events.

But am having difficulty not downvoting you for obliquely associating Walmart and Michigan Football.

This site provides more information, through a collective effort, than what the majority of pay sites offer. The mods ask very little; give a degree of thought to both content and structure, something that adds in making it even more unique. To bitch about whatever problems there might be - and I've encountered a very small number - is analagous to bitching about the quality of a free meal when you haven't eaten in days. Be grateful and contribute when it doesn't present a financial burden in exchange for some extremely hot takes, the right to voice your opinion on same and just what the hell more could one ask for?
The quantity of quality posters, again collectively, probably possessing more knowledge than any pay site and inasmuch as they ask for very little, even allowing the occasional vent post - something the majority of us need from time to time - and its really difficult to find anything to check in the negative column.

Holy hyberbole you're comparaing website performance with "not eating in a few days and getting a free meal"
All the positives you list are true but can you name one other website (which are almost all free as well) that has even 10% as much downtime as this one?
And what is wrong with users addressing issues that would help improve the experience? Many aren't "bitching" they are looking for a solution.

Yes, it can get a little clunky at times. But you know what? It's one of the more secure platforms that is available. I frankly will take a little clunkiness if I am a bit more assured that my stuff isn't getting hacked by Trump or whoever...

If by "bent out of shape" you mean laugh at your pathettic ass for spending so much time downvoting every post in a thread, then yes. Yes I am bent out of shape. You should come out of your mom's basement occasionally and get some fresh air.

I really don't understand why he isn't running on some autoscaling infrastructure. In the era of cloud, no one should be gettong 502 errors
