Meta: MGoBlog is running better appreciation thread

Submitted by Magnus on

I know Brian et al. take a lot of crap at times for 502 errors and app issues, but I also think it's worth noting that the site is much faster over the past few days, and the app problem was fixed. Brian mentioned that bots were causing a lot of the frustration with 502 errors. So thanks to Brian, his brother, the app developer, and whoever else put time into getting some of those problems worked out. Michigan had a basketball game and rumors flying around about Tyrone Wheatley, Jr., and I haven't encountered one 502 error.

Here here! Still wish he would address these issues explicitly on this site and not on other social media like the twitters (which many of us don't use), but I definitely appreciate the improvement.

you ever paid anything for the content on this site? Kind of an odd thing to say.

I'm saying that the website is doing what any website is supposed to do...work when more than 8 people visit it at one time.

Hmmmmm.

OK, more than $2 billion was spent on the HealthCare.gov website, including some of the best programmers in the world and all the highest-speed servers on the planet, and it crashed because of excessive traffic.

Want to say, "awwww, government sucks" to explain that? Walmart is the world's largest retailer with $100s of billion in revenue annually. It can spend anything it wants on its website. And that website is notoriously terrible, crashing during peak usage all the time.

My point? Shit happens, and when you consider we get BOTH access to this site AND all the content for free, there is nothing to complain about here...

I hate this argument. Every single website I visit I am not charged to visit. He makes his money off advertising, not monthly fees. I love this site more than any other, but it is a fact the technology behind it is just that.

is not an argument it is a fact. I hate when people bitch about the tech. I don't care if he makes ten million dollars off the site, it is free to use and I never in my life have bitched about something I like that I got for free. Weird to me.

This site provides more information, through a collective effort, than what the majority of pay sites offer. The mods ask very little; give a degree of thought to both content and structure, something that adds in making it even more unique. To bitch about whatever problems there might be - and I've encountered a very small number - is analagous to bitching about the quality of a free meal when you haven't eaten in days. Be grateful and contribute when it doesn't present a financial burden in exchange for some extremely hot takes, the right to voice your opinion on same and just what the hell more could one ask for?

The quantity of quality posters, again collectively, probably possessing more knowledge than any pay site and inasmuch as they ask for very little, even allowing the occasional vent post - something the majority of us need from time to time - and its really difficult to find anything to check in the negative column.

Holy hyberbole you're comparaing website performance with "not eating in a few days and getting a free meal"

All the positives you list are true but can you name one other website (which are almost all free as well) that has even 10% as much downtime as this one?

And what is wrong with users addressing issues that would help improve the experience? Many aren't "bitching" they are looking for a solution.

People complain when twitter goes down, when instagram goes down, etc. I get that site troubles are not exclusive to MGoBlog. But site troubles for a pretty simple type of website due to what others say is outdated tech, maybe gives reason to bring them up...as opposed to a site like Walmart that is probably more complex and has problems despite advanced tech. As this site gets more visitors, these issues will be more frequent and it will fail exactly when the biggest events occur. I'm pretty sure Brian would not want that as he clearly takes pride in his work. He won't know unless people bring it up. Issues or not I still visit this site 10 times per day so there's that.

If by "bent out of shape" you mean laugh at your pathettic ass for spending so much time downvoting every post in a thread, then yes. Yes I am bent out of shape. You should come out of your mom's basement occasionally and get some fresh air.
