Dunno if the Lions could have found some way to fit it into the cap, but it seems like Franchising him and then hoping his value would have been less next year would have been a better plan then just losing him.  But having him count $26 mil against the cap this year would have been painful  I don't know how you properly build a team that way.

if they had franchised him. That dead money they're on the hook for now would have been added to his contract amount. If they could have signed him to an extension, they could have structured it in a way to bring that number down.

But the Lions will be alright if they bring back Fairley and draft that DT Brown from Texas. In the end depth wins in the NFL, so aside from QB, you just can't afford that much guaranteed money being tied up in any position.

Sucks for the Lions although they painted themselves into this corner by previous contract restructures with Suh. Tag should have never gotten above $10-15. Good luck to AFC East QBs.

What nobody is talking about is how screwed the Lions got by the rookie contracts of high 1st round picks 5 years ago (Johnson, Stafford, Suh).  All of the restructuring was necessary given the huge numbers, and eliminated any chance of logically "franchising" Suh.

Having said that, I'm glad the lions didn't blow that cash on him...he is a very good player, but not that good.

I think one of the biggest dumb moves here no one mentioned was The Lions and Mayhew not preparing for the possibility of this and franchise tagging Fairley for almost nothing and not taking Aaron Donald last year. Boneheaded. They drafted that fucking bum Ebron instead of using there brains and planning ahead. Idiotic.

This is the part that pisses me off.  They knew a decision was coming on Suh, they should have known the numbers weren't going to work in their favor which would make resigning him a longshot, yet they passed on drafting a solid DT as a backup option and took yet another TE, and then compounded things by declining to pick up Fairley's option.  Now they have no DTs on the roster with any sort of playing time, and will have to overpay for subpar replacements.  Had they planned this out better, they could've had both Donald and Fairley signed to very reasonable rookie deals and the line's interior would have been solid.

Instead, they have fuck all.

but failing to pick the option on Fairley made sense. This was a guy who wasn't consistent, wasn't a hard worker. Why tie yourself into such a player?

This free agent drafr class actually has some quality tackles as does the draft. So your claim about "subpar replacements" is just plain wrong.

The lions planned to keep Suh with the largest contract in NFL history for a defender. So the numbers did add up. The problem is the Dolphins went completely nuts and mortgaged their future to offer an even crazier contract.

I am a Lions fan as well and as much as I hate to lose a player like Suh, if that number is representative of what he was asking generally (if indeed he communicated figures to the Lions, which he may or may not have), then between that and the prosepct of being tied up due to the franchise salary, there wasn't really a financially comfortable way for the Lions to keep Suh given the cap situation. I know there are people out there screaming "same old Lions", but it seems like if you sign him to a ridiculous contract then you can't do anything, or you let Suh walk even if you're sad about it and open the door to the numerous moves you should probably make. Further, this makes a DT in the draft a good possibility for the Lions, I would think.

Not the biggest fan of Suh and yes that contract and money was huge. But with him goes the Lions defense. His constant penetration and disruption through double and triple teams was the Lions D. It freed up Levy a LOT and made room for the rest of our less than quality linebackers. It made up for a secondary that has never been good. Slay has real potential and Quin is legit, but theyre about to have to cover for a lot longer.

Stafford is going to have to figure it out. Lions will need to outscore teams once again next year. He certainly has the weapons... but hes had them for awhile.

If we stink it up next year I honestly hope we deal Calvin Johnson. Not because it will help the Lions, but because I dont want to see him go the way of Barry Sanders. An all-time talent stuck on an all-time terrible franchise. Would love to see him have a chance to win it all.

team.

He returns. The Lions will miss Suh(who wouldn't?) but remember that the best defense in football today(Seattle) does not have dominant tackles and neither do the Pats. Wilfork isn't the player he once was.

There are several quality DTs in free agency and in the draft. I'm not worried about finding a replacement. If the Lions can sign a quality CB and another pass rusher that defense can be as good, if not better. Quin and Levy were every bit as important as Suh in the defense's performance.

Looking forward to Suh being suspended this year when he implodes on the field.  It'll probably be after taking a cheap shot on Brady.  He has to stay in the headlines with his bad-boy behavior while continually making the NFL look like a joke.

sucks they didn't get anything in return but losing suh isn't the end of the year. the defense was great last year, but the swartz years the d was nothing special w mostly the same guys. suh didn't make that defense, the coaches did.

I'm sorry he's gone, because he was a great defensive tackle. However I'm happy the lions are freeing up all that money, and eliminating a good number of negative plays (deserved or not.) Sun was a beast, but we're better off spreading that money around the entire line.
