5-year rolling contract that automatically adds a year at the conclusion of each season until he dies or retires.

I suppose this was easier to do without an active AD, but I guess nobody in the President's office is too concerned with all those unresolved investigations?

I stand corrected, this is pretty awful:

“Current Infractions Case: The parties agree that Athletics will not terminate Head Coach for cause due to any current infractions matter that involves conduct that occurred on or prior to the date of full execution of this Agreement. If Head Coach is suspended by the NCAA and/or the Big 12 Conference as a result of the pending NCAA infractions matter, Head Coach agreed that he and BCLT will forfeit 50% of earned Salary and Professional Services Payment during the time of such suspension. For clarity purposes and by way of example, if Head Coach receives a one-month suspension, then for that month only Head Coach’s salary and professional services payment would be reduced by 50% to $9,735 and $114,583.”

So this is KU saying that any past NCAA infractions are basically water under the bridge.

I'd expect that message to not be received by at least one group.

In my limited experience KU fans are a special bunch. Kentucky fans seem wise to what's going on there but don't care because ... SEC, I guess? To a lesser degree, Duke fans are in on the joke, too. Basketball seems like a temporary diversion for them.

Kansas? They think their basketball program is among the most special things on earth and can completely understand why 5-star players from Chicago would find Lawrence chock full of "tradition" and choose it over better schools closer to home.

I can get behind this theory. I met a diehard Kansas fan who also happens to be an attorney for the NCAA a couple of years ago. A few months into the tenure of Howard’s hiring, he was warning me that Howard needs to be careful because he could be in trouble soon.  Because of his position with the NCAA, I just listened, but I was thinking to myself, ‘who is this guy wearing Kansas gear smearing Howard before he gets started?’

I know KU has already flipped off the NCAA with one of those giant, foam middle fingers.  But this?  Holy hell!!  This is like LSU extending Will Wade!

Uhh, wait...

It's like Arizona not firing Sean Miller...

Wait a minute...

Tell me again why we fired Steve Fisher?

As soon as we hang those banners, we are no better than those that we criticize and claim moral and ethical superiority to. Are you okay with that? I am, but I also tend to believe that everybody’s breaking the rules and some just do it more than most.

In fairness, this old news from late February:

"The Kansas program has been accused of multiple Level 1 violations and charges of lack of institutional control and head coach responsibility. All of the allegations carry potentially severe punishments if the ruling goes against the program. KU's case has been accepted by the newly formed Independent Resolution Accountability Process, which will investigate and rule on the charges. All rulings by the IARP are final and not subject to appeal."

Apparently not an April Fools Joke?  In what world and in what supply and demand market is a lifetime contract a thing?

Lifetime . . . until the team stinks Bill . . . . right?

Well, I guess now that they have their Self identified for the foreseeable future, KU won't be experiencing any existential crises!

They want to ensure that it cost them as much as possible if they ever have to get rid of Self.  I mean the guy has only made $50 million over the last decade. It would be ridiculous for him to take the massive risk of ever having less than five years on his contract.

They also included this bit in, “As part of the new agreement, KU will not terminate Self for cause “due to any current infractions matter that involves conduct that occurred on or prior to” the signing of the new contract. Instead, if Self is suspended by the Big 12 and/or the NCAA, he will forfeit half his base salary and professional services payment while on suspension.”

It going to terrible if he gets suspended and has to get by on $2.75 million for a year.

Eh, I guess rewarding a cheater is on par with rewarding a head football coach a new contract for not being able to beat his rivals and any team that cracks the top 10. Let alone, not even winning their division/making a B1G title game appearance over the course of his 6 years here.

I mean, something like this was bound to happen - "Bill Self, President For Life Of Kansas Basketball" probably makes sense.....to Kansas fans and that's about it.
