Jim Harbaugh Appreciation Thread

Submitted by Clarence Boddicker on October 3rd, 2021 at 3:15 AM

Yeah, give it up for Coach Harbaugh too. The new hires are all on the money, he looks rejuvenated and reinvigorated, and the team is 5-0 and hasn't trailed in any game this season. This is for all the doubters, starting with myself. I am so glad to be wrong, because he is a Michigan legend, and I want more than anything for him to succeed.

Gotta agree. I had some real misgivings after the MSU game, but I was always hopeful he could right the ship. 2020 is looking more like an outlier, a young team, gutted by the loss of two of their critical players. Felt the coach was dispirited, which was reflected in the team’s play. I will say Coach Harbaugh is resilient, and he’s made some outstanding coaching moves. Still some tough games ahead, but I like the team’s attitude.

And remember, he took a pay cut to be given the opportunity to do what he’s done over the first 5 games.  Some jobs are not about pay, as instead they are for God and Country (Bacon 2019), and he clearly took that approach here.

Nebraska officially scares the shit out of me, but let’s let the good times roll.  Go blue.

Wasn't it worse than that? I thought we lost both ends on both lines (Hutch, Paye, Mayfield, Hayes). Pretty bad luck, but Harbaugh has come back swinging.

I agree that the younger coaches were a good idea. Seems like there's always some hungry young man prowling the sidelines of other good teams. I'm glad we have McDonald, Nua, Moore, etc., to be those hungry young men.

When it comes to attrition by graduation/pros, more folks need to believe in the recruiting a little more. The quality of players brought in has been only behind OSU in rankings. Both defensive lines have been well recruited for years—but too many fans want players to come in and immediately dominate.

Next year, Braiden is going to pop off in replacing Aidan. Ojabo could go off one good year, but if he does I could see Harrell stepping up.

Hinton is being used well, and he’s making plays. So many guys in the interior are finally in a good scheme that utilizes their size. It is fun watching this defense.

If I remember correctly...

QB1 transferred when the B1G initially delayed the season.

WR1 opted-out.

CB1 opted-out.

LG got hurt.

RG got hurt.

LT got hurt.

RT got hurt.

WDE got hurt.

Anchor got hurt.

MLB got hurt.

OL didn't practice together for most of the season, because COVID.

DB coach coached the entire season via Zoom, because COVID.

Entire-ish team got COVID.

Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

Did anyone pay attention to what was happening last year?  Half the time the team wasn’t able to practice as a whole team because of COVID protocols.  The starters almost never practiced as a unit.  There was no real off season program, because the kids were at home and many of those kids did not have a weight room to get into.  Michigan followed strict protocols to protect their athletes and the team performed that way.  That was not a coaching issue, it was bad circumstances.

I loved his composure and tone after the win with Jenny Taft. He was focused, humble, and quick to credit his other coaches or players. I have seen far too many coaches make it about themselves after a breakout win, but he is the same guy he has always been who puts his staff and team first.  He took half the salary with a tiny buyout (betting on himself), and you can see by his actions as well as his physical appearance and words, that this job means everything to him. We are fortunate to have a coach who represents our beloved university by valuing integrity, academic excellence, leadership, and excellence on the field. He is still coaching for his job every week, but I will continue to cheer hard for him every week as I have gladly done since 2015.

This was his first win as an underdog at Michigan - it took too long, but it happened. His track record prior to Michigan is exceptional. For those who gave up on him, he might just win you over before all is said and done. I tip the cap to him, regardless of if he breaks through against osu, because he has poured his heart and soul into this program.  But man, imagine the joy we and he would experience if we slay Goliath on Thanksgiving Saturday!

As I stated in the Friday POSBANG: "Jim Harbaugh gives me great pause here. But cheers to this being the beginning of a joyful road back to his, ours and my recovery." And this game could well be just that-on to a new road. A road of not only playing well but playing with a determined resiliency. The effort from the opening bell to the final buzzer was/is noteworthy.

Hope springs eternal-and we all got an inspiring dose of hope yesterday.

I have a nutty theory....

I don't think Jim Harbaugh was ever that comfortable with his inflated salary - not necessarily because of the attention and expectations that come with it, but because of how outlandish it is for a college coach to be making $8mm a year.

Jim is already uber successful and well off from his playing days, then endorsement deals, then NFL coaching gig.  Given the constant chatter about the $$$ he was making, and that it was coming from his former beloved university, and he wasn't delivering the results he wanted, I actually think the salary cut, along with the weight cut/lifestyle changes has liberated him some.

I could be totally wrong, but I see Jim as the type of guy that likes to be rewarded for performance.

Harbaugh's original $8m per season is on par with what the 49ers were paying him. It's not that he ever truly needed $8m—who does? But Harbaugh is uber-competitive. If he is at the top of his profession (as he was then), he expects to be treated that way.

I am 100% certain that if Harbaugh's performance through the first 6 years were in line with expectations, neither side would have been talking about a pay cut.

I'm all in on this Harbaugh with any sort of emotion. He seems to have channeled his old self which won, but often seemed to rub refs and opposing coaches the wrong way far too often for comfort, while diverting those antics toward genuine pleasure and love for team, staff and game.

We all know a loss or two is still the most likely outcome, and Bowser is always waiting for us in the final round, but at least we can now give it our best shot and follow his emotional lead as fans.

I remarked to my friend as we were watching the game that he looks like he’s having fun on the sidelines.

I don’t know if the younger staff has reenergized him or what it is, but he just seems to be having fun coaching this team. And it is quite clear, shown at least in how the team took to jumping around, that the team is feeding off of that. I know you always have fun when you’re winning, but I can’t think of another JH team here that seems to be enjoying it as much as this team.

I was unhappy with last season, but never talked Coach down.  He still needs to do more.  In his time with Michigan he has kept making changes to try and get us to the top.  This years team has been fun to watch.  Lets get them buckeyes now.

I am 27 years old. My good Michigan memories in my life reside with Jim Harbaugh at the helm. All in all, with him leading the team, he gives us a chance to be really good every year. He has given us amazing days like yesterday, and rough days like OSU ‘18. But he is ours. Forever Go Blue

This comment acknowledges that he dropped some pounds which, from personal experience, can often make all the difference in the world on your outlook. Unfortunately, I think I dropped some weight because I cut almost 99% of dairy (sorry Fairlife aka Harbaugh milk). It's great to see him pumping fists and smiling on the sidelines. Truly.

It was great to see Coach and Cade having a smiling, arm over shoulders exchange in the pregame.  Cade came out looking calm and collected.  Coach does seem different this year, sure.  I’m just glad he is enjoying his job.  Life is short.  Namaste.

He is Maize and Blue through and through. He is a competitor. You have to be if you want to be a coach in Super Bowl. He showed this game he is not about just running the ball. He is willing to adapt in his own way. I would love for him to get us a one or two national championship, and go and try to win a super bowl. He is our player and would love for him to achieve the highest accolade (after our B1G championships and NC ofcourse )

Loved how fired up he got on the punt recovery after Wisconsin touched it. Love how he talked about needing to be better with a balance attack.

They  game planned for the opponent and attacked their weakness. Used the pass game to open the run game. Loved the in game adjustment of using JJ for qb keeps plus letting him air it out. Now that's one more dynamic teams will have to prep for. Absolutely  Love that he put together a student Council. Talks to 4 kids from each class twice a week. GO BLUE.

Jimmy is a great coach, and competitor.  His track record speaks for itself.

He also cares about Michigan - even more so than any of us here on this blog.

He's the right guy for this job.  I've never, ever doubted that, even if we can agree that some of the play calls lack imagination occasionally.

I love the changes he's made this year, and the energy I see in the players, the coaches, the staff, and Jimmy.  Feels like they all like each other, and are playing for each other.  That's a great formula.

I'm all in.  LFG.  On to Nebraska

"He also cares about Michigan - even more so than any of us here on this blog."

I am going to point this out because, from a moderating and from a personal perspective as an alumnus of the place, saying things like this is infuriating and a misjudgment of this blog, which has, for the most part, probably the most passionate and engaged portion of the Michigan fanbase on it. That said, your statement is nonsensical in that respect.

He has done this before at Michigan... Unfortunately we haven't beaten OSU, which I have always said is the only issue people have with him.

To get rid of him with the hopes of finding someone to beat OSU has always been a silly idea.  Campbell cant beat Iowa. Fickell isn't coming to UM...

I was one of the people that came on here last year and wondered whether Jim was okay. And perhaps what was lost in that question is that he had a right to be, I guess, “not okay”.

It was an awful year societally, but also, with a child battling health concerns/in the NICU, our coach was facing pressures that many of us need to confront, but often have the ability to do so without a beaming spotlight shining on us.

I’m glad to see Coach approaching life with a more positive spirit this year, but moreover, I hope it means the things he’s had to battle as a human have also taken a turn for the better.

Yes!  Make this thread a sticky.  Our memory seems to be short around here.
The comments are great and I have nothing more to really add. I’ve been a 100% Harbaugh supporter up until last year when I started to waiver a bit.  After today, those feelings of doubt are long gone.  We still have the brutal part of the schedule coming up.  I hope they can stay focused because that team that played yesterday can hang with anyone.  Let’s keep it going!

I will remain cautiously optimistic. He has started to change his generic offense compared to the last couple years which was something I was looking at. He finally got a road win against one of the best Ds in wiscy at their place. That’s super impressive. I think this solidifies another year which I think I will be okay with. The other measurement is rivals. If he can win against MSU or OSU I would be pretty excited for the following year. I want him to be our coach and take us to the promise land. Still don’t know if he’s the one though. Prove me wrong Jimmy!

I’m realistic in that I don’t even expect a win against osu given that talent disparity, just MSU. That said, I think this team lines up to being able to upset OSU this year. Cautiously optimistic.

I wanted to see a change in offense and defense. I think JH has, and is impressive how he’s turned things around. I just want to see a win at MSU. I was one that had this season as a dumpster fire and so far that is anything of sort. Keep proving me wrong Jimmy.
