Honestly, I don't envy anyone who got to watch them. I would've rather watched the 1989 National Championship team.

I love where Michigan Basketball is now.

At least the 2013 Final Four team's accomplishments won't be stripped down the road. I didn't see Michigan win anything in Basketball except an NIT in 2004, up until 2011-12. Chris Webber is one of many reasons that that was the case.

The current program's banners will stay up, the banners from the B1G Championships (championships. A word neither Fab Five banner had) will stay up and John Beilein will be loved forever because he brought this program from the floor and has taken it damn near to the top of the world.

Watching Michigan Basketball come back and going from being 10-22 in 2007-08, to playing in the last game of the NCAA D1 Basketball season just 5 years later.......amazing.

Okay.

I've been a fan for about 25 years now, give or take. The Fab Five was the most spectacular, must see tv that I have witnessed in my life as a Michigan fan. You should care. It was a special, special time. The fact that some dirty money changed hands doesn't change that experience one iota. It happened, both the good and the bad. You take them both and there you have; the facts of life!  <embedvideohere>

These are the times you really show your immaturity. Sure the experience we're having now with the BBall program is awesome. Beilein is a great coach, and a better human being. That's great for the University. It dosn not diminish your previous loves, just gives you more perspective.

Really.

Really?

I'm irritated because this shit with Chris/Jalen is brought up every single year.

Should he apologize, should the banners go back up, Michigan needs to honor the Fab Five. They played their last game here as a team over 20 years ago.

Me saying "don't care" and the whole point of my response is that I don't care that I never got to see them play.

The current program is my version of your thrills of the 89 Championship/Fab Five. They won nothing for the first 16 years of my life but an NIT. I'm finally settling into the fact that Michigan Basketball is truly back to where it should be.

You sound silly trying to demean what the Fab 5 did. I saw the 89' team and the Fab 5..and it is no competition as to who I would rather watch. Yes Webber took money but if you know anything about college basketball you would know that players taking money has always been  rampant in the sport.

They can keep those banners  down forever, it doesn't change the fact that I saw those kids play for a national title as true freshman and again as sophomores. What they did was unprescedented and their impact on basketball was huge. /get off my lawn

Sounds to me like you are bitter about not being able to watch them. You really did miss out! Get off Juwan Howard's lawn.

I wonder if you understand how influential they were. We were watching a change in sports culture before our very eyes. That's pretty cool (in my opinion) even if you didn't like the guys or their style of play or whatever.

This has become a Band-Aid that we're pulling off one hair at a time for a couple of decades.  Maybe this Webber book and its aftermath can be what finally buries all of this.  I don't even really care what the resolution is... I'm just sick of the whole damn thing.

JClay: Jalen needs to shut the hell up.

Jalen has acknowledged that publically calling Webber out isn't getting the desired effect and Webber takes it the wrong way. Then he does it again. Every 6 months. At some point, you're either too stupid to realize what you're doing isn't working, or your real purpose in doing this is not what you're saying it is.

I think the Freep reporter is making it sound like Jalen Rose called up the press to issue a new call for an apology.  Six months have passed, time for me to demand it again!

That's not what happened.  The reporter brought up Webber's film.  Then probes Jalen on whether they are speaking.  Jalen says, "I heard through mutual friends that he's upset that I said that I feel like he should have come out and apologize for some transgressions that happened at the University of Michigan. But I still stand behind that." (and then later says something like, it's two words, etc etc)

I'll bet if he DIDN'T say that, the Freep Story would be "JALEN ROSE BACKS OFF DEMAND THAT WEBBER APOLOGIZE" with multiple paragraphs rehashing everything ending with some breathless questions about whether this is a new phase in their relationship, a new warmth, a chance for healing!   And then we'd still have an MGoBlog discussion about how Jalen just can't leave it the Webber thing alone.

I go back to this: lets say Jalen sincerely wants Webber's relationship to improve with the rest of the Fab 5 and the University. Lets say Jalen is correct in that Webber should apologize. Now, does Jalen saying what he did help or hinder that?

It doesn't help. And that's not my opinion: ITS JALEN'S. Jalen has said (in a BS Report with Simmons right after the Title Game 18 months ago) that he understood Webber didn't like him talking about this publicly, and it makes Webber "cool" on reconciliation or whatever (I forget exactly how he worded it). He acknowledged that doing X makes Y less likely to happen. And yet, he continues to do X regularly with the stated purpose of accomplishing Y. Its either the definition of insanity, or his real reason for X is something other than Y.

He didn't have to say anything. They ask him a question about it and he could simply go, "Oh, man, I love Chris, I love Michigan, and I love the time we spent at Michigan. I'm not going to comment on anything other than that." Why is that so hard?

I love Jalen's effusiveness, I just think this is more motivated by Jalen being this gregarious guy who loves to talk -- which is highly entertaining and why alot of us love Jalen -- more than it is some well-thought out public statement. When Jalen has reflected thoughtfully in the past about the effects of him "calling Webber out" in the past, he's acknowledged its hurt the situation. So stop doing it again, Jalen.

Sometimes right is right.

Sympathetic whites used to tell blacks that marching and fighting outwardly would only hurt the civil rights cause, because racists would fight back harder. They genuinely believed that, and there might have even been some truth to it.

But right is right. Webber's actions have hurt Rose. Its obvious that the Fab Five era was the highlight of Rose's life, and he is blackballed at Michigan because of Webber. Fuck that. I'd be all over Webber's ass.

I love the Fab 5, as a team, and as individuals. I'd like the situation to be resolved at all levels.  They all seem like great guys, even Chris, despite his petulance and selfishness, is a thoughtful caring person who has done a lot of good things in life. He's also a pretty damn enjoyable broadcaster.

I'm ecstatic that our program has recovered from the Fisher-Ellerbe stuff.  Amaker did some of the heavy lifting to wipe the slate clean and build a new foundation and Beilein is the best damn coach in all of the NCAA.  This is great.

But the Fab 5 is a HUGE part of the program history. I would love for Chris to get through whatever his issues are to make amends with the program and the other guys. Happy ending and all that... Since he seems not ready to do so, I'd be interested to know about his rationale for it.

Jalen brings it up because he is asked about it. He is asked about it because people want to know. Chris benefits from the publicity. I look forward to hearing his take on it all via book/documentary/whatever...

You don't want to hear about it anymore? Don't click on a story about C-Webb or Jalen. You're not a victim.  You don't have to like them or care, but a lot of people do. Commenting on every Fab 5 thread that you're anti-CWebb is being the dude who complains about recruiting rankings because of Kevin Grady or Kelly Baraka.

but the fab 5 were a lot more important to college basketball and more loved/hated than any other UM team for their brashness and style of basketball.

btw I should have said MOST who didn't care were probably younger - didn't mean to imply all, sorry.  Now get off my lawn.

There's always a tendency to hold up your own era as a golden age.  So during the FF run, younger fans felt like any Fab 5 or Jalen narrative was taking something away from the current team.

Having lived through the F5, I can say - and this was confirmed in the doc - that many older fans recoiled at the baggy shorts, trash talk and attitude that made the guys so compelling.

For some reason he has been a total prick in this whole saga. Unless he has some new info he wants to share, I agree with Jalen.

Would love to see Jalen, Jimmy, Ray, and especially Juwan Howard a part of the UM hoops scene.

Jalen is 100% correct.  Webber is THE person who made it "cool" to take Ed Martin's money.  Ironically enough, Webber's parents are/were middle class and he wasn't hurting for money, but he pretended he was "ghetto" to justify his greed.

I will never forget Webber's appearance on a Detroit radio show where he basically said he "did nothing wrong" and blamed the media for all of the problems he created.  He has never apologized, nor has he ever uttered anything close to a mea culpa.

Webber is old enough to act like an adult.  Maybe he should try it sometime.

(A)    Chris should apologize to UM for keeping UM under the cloud of impending NCAA penalties by refusing to testify—even lying.  How long did his stonewalling last—ten years?

(B)    UM has already profusely apologized to the NCAA for student-athletes like Chris taking money.

(C)    The NCAA perhaps should also apologize to Chris for rules that prevented him from earning his fair share of the money.

So (A) apologizes to (B) who apologizes to (C) who—many think—should apologize to (A).

Dear A-B-C:

You really shouldn’t be writing books, making TV commentaries and spending the money of NCAA schools by going to court. Make your apologies.  Get it over with.   Get over yourselves.  We are getting tired of you chewing the cud of a 20 year old mess that should have been digested long ago.

I think if you're going to call this "another twist" then the title should be "Webber Documentary Out Soon; Jalen's Stance Unchanged."

I don't understand how Jalen's comments are in any way a new twist  it's Jalen just standing by earlier comments, made current only because Webber is coming out with his own documentary.

Just because the Detroit News is trying to be inflammatory, we don't have to take it and run with it.

Because the headline makes it sound as if Jalen made some kind of press announcement, or something. It worked. Look at the title of this thread, and subsequent reactions: mgobloggers have subsequently griped that Jalen is stirring the pot, bringing it up regularly, won't let it go, etc. That didn't happen during this interview. Mgobloggers must think that because the News is presenting the story that way, and they apparently can't access the original interview to see the exchange for themselves without the Detroit News lens.

I don't understand what your issue is here.  The headline is completely accurate.  Regardless of how the topic was brought up,  Jalen here is calling on Chris to apologize, and in no uncertain terms:

And all he had to do is say two words. It's not brain surgery. They are, 'I'm sorry.'

I don't see a lot of wiggle room there.

going to apologize. He thought then like now that it was all about him. I love him in his post-playing career but there is no way around he was a kid molded by excessive adulation. Jalen and Howard came from much tougher circumstances and yet it's Webber, a middle class kid, who wants to play the poor, exploited athlete.

If your business is media related you need to make sure you get coverage periodically. Further, this is just another assist from Rose to Webber in support of the book deal. Most of these conflicts are not real and just for publicity. My favorite is Andy Kaufman and his many comedic charades. Google Andy Kaufman fight on Letterman.

To me, it's obvious that four of the Fab Five truly appreciate each other and the university they came from and they are being undermined by one who still thinks he's better than everybody involved.  He could have done that movie with his brothers, but his own distortion of the truth is more important than making life easier for everyone else.

The day he apologizes is the day that Hoke starts wearing red and says he loves Ohio State and wishes he was a coach there.
