Could say the same thing…

Could say the same thing about the “abortion” pins. Just sayin’

Is there a collective that…

Is there a collective that people prefer? Do they all compensate the players equally? Are there any that are football specific?

So all the sophisticated UM…

So all the sophisticated UM grads must be liberals and the slack jawed blue collar types can only be conservatives, huh? Considering leftists love to call conservatives “ignorant” your statement really lacks self awareness. I have 2 degrees from Michigan and am definitely not liberal (consider myself more of a libertarian). Most of my friends and family are alums as well, some of them are liberal, some of them are conservative.

Obviously, everything about the pandemic sucks. But I think we would agree that the “big picture” aspect of this that is most troubling is that not even a viral pandemic could get Republicans and Democrats to stop pointing fingers at each other. Neither side is 100% right or wrong on this and too much energy is being wasted on gaining political points.

Maybe there could be a…

Maybe there could be a silver lining to no college football this year. Maybe, just maybe, Michigan fans will realize this is all just pointless entertainment and it should be fun (GASP)! Maybe, just maybe, we would no longer have large sections of the fanbase howling at the top of their lungs that winning “only” 75-80 % of our games is an unacceptable insult to humanity.

Eh, who am I kidding? We’ll still be the same miserable pricks. A man can dream though . . .

Way to be a tough guy. Maybe…

Way to be a tough guy. Maybe if you didn’t spend hundreds of dollars on every shitty piece of apparel Nike slaps a block M on, you’d have a few extra bucks to get through this. Maybe you can quarantine yourself with Michael Moore in his Torch Lake mansion and talk about how unfair capitalism is.

Appreciate the optimism. I…

Appreciate the optimism. I hope you’re right.

Thanks for this Brian. For…

Thanks for this Brian. For some reason I've been slow to get revved up this season. Now I'm there!

I grew up in Flint and spent 8 years at UM. I’ve lived in the Traverse City for the last 5. Personally, I think the winters are better up here because we have consistent snow cover for longer. You can ski, snow shoe, ice fish, snow mobile, etc. In AA I felt like we rotated between freezing cold with a little snow and mud/slush. What fun is 35 degrees and rain, which I feel like is the most common weather in SE Michigan now?

Traverse City

Pros: anyone…

Traverse City

Pros: anyone who’s lived in Michigan knows what Traverse City has to offer. “Up north” Michigan but with most of the amenities of more populated areas. The summers are incredible and the heavy tourism during that time is the very mild price we pay for having as many nice restaurants and drinking establishments as we do. The brewery/winery scene is very fun. While none of the outdoor activities here are world class, I think northern Michigan is a fairly unique location in that you can do practically all of them - hiking, biking, skiing, snowshoeing, snow mobiles, fishing, hunting, and obviously beach and water sports. I’ve been to plenty of our national parks and sleeping bear dunes really takes a back seat to none of them in terms of beauty. It’s a place you can live and feel like you’re on vacation year round. We don’t have a ton of culture, but do get some moderate concerts/acts between interlochen and the Cherry Festival. For full time residents, schools are good and there are enough young families that there are plenty of things to do with young kids during the long winter months.

Cons: Really not much. The weather isn’t much worse than downstate, except this month. April is pretty rough as it takes longer for us to get out of winter. Real estate is not cheap. Traveling can be a little tricky as you’re either looking at an extra flight or driving to either GR or Detroit.

He spends his summers on…

He spends his summers on Lake Charlevoix. So there you go

No kidding. When I was at…

No kidding. When I was at Michigan I got a biology degree, which isn’t engineering but certainly very respectable looking. I looked into a BGS and learned that you actually have to take more 300 and 400 level classes than my biology major. I decided on bio because that almost exactly mirrored my dental school pre-recs.

I know 2 people with BGS degrees. My dad, who wound up in dental school amd retired at 55 and my freshman year roommate, who went to Harvard Law. I think the BGS did ok by them

Is the media frying him for any of this?

“I took a lot of bullets this year”

Does he hear himself? What a self loving asshat. He’s making all of this about him and the reputation of his program. Do us all a favor Tom, do some self reflecting and realize that you HAVE been a part of the problem and digging your heels in and playing the victim will NOT help the university heal

Reason we’re unlikely to see Peters

Apparently before the season, Peters told Harbaugh he was ok with Speight/Okorn running the team this year and would focus on next year. Needless to say, it’s unlikely harbaugh was pleased with that.

The Joe is where I fell in

The Joe is where I fell in love with hockey. Growing up in Flint in the 90s, my dad and I usually got down to a game or two each year. The Joe had such awesome energy in those days and the Wings rarely lost. I remember chants of "Stevie! Stevie" and "Dino! Dino!" And "Ozzie! Ozzie!" Some of my best childhood memories with my dad were at those games. When I was at school at Michigan, the economy was down and it was really easy to get seats for $20/piece for regular season games and even playoffs were incredibly reasonable. My then girlfriend and now wife was almost as enthusiastic about going down to games down there and it was a pretty good indication she was the one for me.

The Wings are the only pro team I really care about and with the mediocrity of Michigan sports for most of the last 10-15 years, the Wings have provided a majority of my positive sports memories and experiences and most of those have occurred at the Joe. I got to go to the game Saturday against the Maple Leafs and while the final result wasn't what I wanted, the energy was still high in the building and I'd be lying if I said I didn't have a few goosebumps/misty eyes at times. It's a horribly outdated facility but man some important and historic hockey has been played there. I'm gonna miss it.

Exactly right. You can't do

Exactly right. You can't do an autopsy on someone, find CTE, and say "yep, football did that." You know what else a lot of football players did (especially in the 70s and 80s)? Cocaine, heavy alcohol use and steroids. These are called confounding variables and it's impossible to gauge what contribution each had to the eventual diagnosis

If Barrett continues to run

If Barrett continues to run the ball 20 times/game and somehow makes it to The Game healthy that will be final confirmation I need to know that Urban Meyer has made a deal with the devil. I just can't believe he can sustain that level of physical punishment for 11 games.

I noticed that too while

I noticed that too while listening to College sports radio this morning. They were fawning over Clemson-Louisville and Tennessee-Georgia as great games while saying our game wasn't pretty. Clemson-Louisville had 8 combined turnovers and ended on a kid not understanding where the first down marker was.
I may be in the minority on this, but I LOVED the game yesterday. It was incredibly tense and dramatic knowing that whoever blinked on defense or special teams first was going to lose. So many games nowadays are 45-42 affairs where the only stops are turnovers. It was really refreshing to see a game where incredibly sound defense was played by both teams and points were at a premium. This wasn't like the MOON game where the lack of points was due to offensive incompetence

These are really really bad.

I've lived in Florida the last 2 years and still have not gotten used to the summer heat - it is seriously oppressive and I feel like I've had a low grade sweat for 3 months. We are moving back to the mitten next weekend and I cannot wait. Personally, I'd take winter over the summer down here no question. You can always put a coat on, there's only so much clothing you can take off . . .

Several things. 1.) Yes, he

Several things.

1.) Yes, he could make more money in Toronto but the Canadian dollar is weak right now and taxes are higher as well. Without knowing specifics, it's hard to say how much more he would have to earn to balance it out but it's a consideration.
2.) Yes Toronto/Canada are hockey crazy and he could be a god there. But it cuts both ways. The media and fan scrutiny will be much more intense. I'm sure Phaneuf and Kessel have wonderful things to say about Toronto. And Detroit is only a 4 hour drive for his parents.
3.) Yeah, Babcock is a good coach but Bashill accomplished basically the same thing in his first year as a NHL coach as Babcock did his last 3 years. And it could be argued this past year was the weakest roster the Wings have had in a long time. It appears Holland is at least trying to remedy that this summer and obviously Stamkos would be a huge part of that.
4.) The wings have some nice young talent too, most of which have actually played in the NHL - Larkin, Tatar, Nyquist, DeKeyser, and Mrazek

3.)

Truly one of the most fun

Truly one of the most fun players to watch all time. Pavel was the worth the price of admission, so impressive to watch in person. Most predicted this would happen, but still sad just the same

What is your fear level for

What is your fear level for that? We have an infant and I'm not sure I trust the money will be there when it's time for him to go to Michigan.

This is exactly right. It was crazy how many random employees the dental school had whose only job seemed to be collecting our assignments or printing off power points. I just pray colleges get their comeuppance before I have to start paying for my son. Luckily he's only 7 weeks, so we've got time.

Sad news. He may be my

Sad news. He may be my favorite all time Wing to watch. Detroit fans have really been spoiled with some of the amazing talent that has come through in the last 25 years - Yzerman, Fedorov, Lidstrom, Datysuk. To me, that's why keeping the playoff streak alive is so special, it keeps the connection to that era alive. Hopefully they can make some noise against Tampa . . .

Exactly. The reality is only

Exactly. The reality is only one team wins their last game, so if a championship is the measuring point of success, that means there are 29 failures every year. Detroit has won their fair share of cups during the streak too . .

I agree with these. Billy

I agree with these. Billy sauer completely blew that 2008 game. We managed to come all the way back with Hogan in net only to lose in OT. It looked like the boys were completely out of gas by that point.
And I don't know if I've ever been as upset about a sporting event as that Miami OT game. We got completely hosed and would have been very hot going into the frozen 4

Growing up in michigan, you

Growing up in michigan, you simply have to deal with them way more than osu fans. And I'm sure all of us have at least a few sparties that have infiltrated our families. So familiarity breeds contempt.
More important than that is the attitude with which their fan base (and frankly both their bball and football) operates with. They are going through their best stretch of football in 60 years, yet they still frame all of their success relative to michigan. To me, it seems like they enjoy Michigan losses more than their own wins. It's amazing how many texts messages/Facebook posts I see from sparties when Michigan loses to non-msu teams. They just do not know how to handle success and it frustrates me to no end that they continue to win games they way they do, when their inferiority complex driven fan base simply doesn't deserve it.

So the safety of 100000

So the safety of 100000 people is less important to you than your personal convenience? I understand we can't let the terrorists win by living in fear, but to pretend like a football game is not a potential target for these psychos is naive.

These Williams sister major

These Williams sister major matches almost never live up to the hype. If I remember right, there was a time when they were both winning everything (early 2000s) and people suspected their dad would dictate who would win when they met in Major finals because the matches were rarely tight. At this point with her illness, I doubt Venus has the physical stamina to win tonight and I'm sure it would be really difficult to be the one to deny her sister a shot at the historic grand slam.

I'm a huge football fan, but

I'm a huge football fan, but my (hopefully soon) future children won't be playing football. For me, it's not just the concussion issue. It's the whole body long term issues that football players tend to have - bad ankles, knees, shoulders, etc. You can't put your kids in a bubble, they are going to be exposed to some risk, but the risk of long term effects of football is too great to justify.

Really any other sport is on the table from a health standpoint. I really prefer they not play baseball, because selfishly I can't stand baseball or spending most of my summer watching little league baseball instead of on a boat on a lake. I played hockey growing up and (as far as I know) have had no concussion/brain injury issues. I would feel comfortable and will encourage my kids to play hockey because the risk for joint injuries is much lower than football and they've raised the start of body checking from 10 to 12.

Just outstanding, well done

Halo burger

Little bit of heaven on earth.

I don't know about that. This

I don't know about that. This team had the eastern conference champs on the ropes in the first round and if not for 2 minutes of Ericcson falling asleep in game 4 likely beats Tampa. The east is wide open right now, if the pieces come together right, I think the wings can still make a run.

Very cool

Sergei/Stevie were my favorites when I was a kid (still have my youth Fedorov jersey) and as I played and watched more hockey I became more aware of just how incredible Nick Lidstrom was. He was never out of position, never made a bad pass, and was better at getting shots through from the point than anyone I've ever seen. As celebrated as he is, I still think he's underrated because there was no aspect of his game that was overwhelming, but his hockey sense makes him, in my mind, the best overall defenseman of all time. I know that's highly debatable and I'm biased as a Wings fan, but I just don't think you could engineer a defenseman to be much better than he was.
