Tale of the Tape II: Compare OSU & UM Stats vs Wiscy
I did this for the Rutgers games, and some people commented that it's pointless to compare stats from a blowout against a very overmatched team. Or that the "transitive property" doesn't apply to college football states. Whatever. Take em for what you want -- our D still shut down Rutgers way better than OSU did.
Undeterred, let's do it again. I know, OSU had a tougher fight -- Wiscy was at home, at night, had extra week to prepare, and "Hornibrook wasn't injured by a vicious hit the first time he threw." Agaoin, whatever. What do these stats tell me? OSU's offense is probably a bit better than ours, but we still managed to put ourselves in position to score exactly the same number of regulation points as OSU, had our FG kickers been average-competent (23 pts each). OTOH, OUR DEFENSE IS WAY BETTER THAN THEIRS. We've now seen that in 2 games in 3 weeks. Sweet Christmas.
Note: The OSU data appears to include OT, and ESPN doesn't have per-period stats, so I couldn't back it out. I guess in regulation they'd have 25 yds less offense and 21 on defense, etc. OT doesn't seem to have affected TOP (nor should it). I excluded OT scoring from the TD data.

OSU was a monster on 3rd down conversion last night vs Wisconsin. Noah Brown came up with some great catches and Barrett showed why he is so dangerous. Consistent conversion of 3rd downs can be a morale killer for a defense. If our D can get off the field and limit the total number of plays the OSU offense is able to make, then I think we have a great shot at winning the game

I think Lewis and Stribling will take away a few of those deep throws. Not all, but enough to make Barrett think twice.
October 16th, 2016 at 9:10 AM ^
Whisky took away almost all the deep throws until late in the game but Barret and OSU kept trying them. Long throws are a staple of the OSU offense - they want to stretch you vertically and horizontally.
October 16th, 2016 at 9:47 AM ^
It was when they went 5 wide. Wisconsin couldn't get pressure from the line alone. Give anyone that much time, you'll get killed.
October 16th, 2016 at 10:01 AM ^
Agreed -I also think that Michigan will be more successful with four man rushes, because of better coverage downfield and the fact that Michigan's d-line will not bounce off of Barrett like Wisconsin's did.
I am not as concerned about the Death Star as I was before this game. The fact that I am no longer concerned concerns me.

That happens when a defense plays zone against that offense.

Forces defenses to play zone. If you have yourgent DB's turn their backs to that offense, the QB might still be running. You have to mix it up and maintain gap integrity, but you can't run man to man all day. JT will kill us.
October 16th, 2016 at 9:12 AM ^
That's the conventional wisdom to stop that offense (which hasn't worked yet is still the conventional wisdom). All you need to do is go back and listen to Don. Brown post-Colorado to know that isn't what he is going to do against OSU.

Or are you just commenting, to comment? You can't just do one thing. Wisky ran man to man 90% of that game, and JT ran up the DB's butts. Don Brown was saying he wasn't going to let that offense or any offense dictate to him the defense he will run. Nothing about schemes.

Yep. I did. Thanks for the insult though.

What do you think Brown was talking about when he said he wasn't going to let any offense dictate the defense he will run. I kind of think he was talking about scheme.

Holding OSU to 23 points in regulation is pretty good. Wisconsin should have won this game.
October 16th, 2016 at 8:43 AM ^
Of you giving osu some credit. Madison is a tough place to play.the "Game" should be epic.
October 16th, 2016 at 9:33 AM ^
It helps when you don't get called for holding
October 16th, 2016 at 9:56 AM ^
a tv viewpoint the extent of holding that went uncalled. UW benefitted in some cases, but the OSU holding on several plays was egregious and the refs just let it go. The B1G must be suggesting or steering the officials to allow that style of play because those holds directly affected the play and yet no flags.
October 16th, 2016 at 10:05 AM ^
Generally, I hate pointing to officiating as a compelling argument for any game outcome. But the extent of the osu holding was extreme -- and flat out wasn't called with any consistency. I have to believe reviewing this game will be an embarassment to B1G officals, and perhaps osu won't have the same obvious advantage when we play them.
But I'm not holding my breath.

Allowing the tackle to clearly move before the snap on the play with the pi in the endzobe. It should have been 1st and 15 or whatever. But ended with first and goal at 2. Mist of their big plays in the second half featured a blown call.

A couple of those 3rd down conversions involved deep hacks from Barrett that were only complete due to very poor play on the ball from CBs. I think Stribling and Lewis turn those into PBUs.
It's clearly possible to move the ball against the OSU defense, but they are tough in the red zone. Judicious seasoning with Peppers might solve that.

Late in the game, Wisconsin missed a tragic amount of tackles. They could've prevented OSU's second TD if they tackled properly. Missed tackles also were almost entirely responsible for OSU's score in OT.
I wonder if the Badgers were just too worn out by the end, because it wasn't like that in the beginning.
October 16th, 2016 at 1:50 PM ^
This was my main takeaway from the game. Wisconsin had so many hits in the backfield that ended up being first downs. If Michigan can wrap up and tackle, they will hold OSU to 21 points or less.
October 17th, 2016 at 8:14 AM ^
This was so unlike what we saw in Ann Arbor. I was very impressed with the way Wisconsin wrapped us up and made the one-on-one tackles in open space. Maybe OSU deserves credit for being more elusive, but tackling seemed to be the big difference between the two games.
October 16th, 2016 at 3:14 PM ^
Seemed to wear down alot in the second. This is something that will not happen with Michigan if healthy. If Barrett can't scramble and their run game is held in check they will lose.
October 16th, 2016 at 8:25 AM ^
I saw a different Wisconsin team last night than the one that came to Ann Arbor a couple weeks ago...

I did, too. Their defense didn't look nearly as on it against OSU than it did against us. Their offense, though, was exactly the same.

They had to deal with a QB who is a big running threat last night, but not against us. That's the telling difference between us and OSU. If the Buckeyes had been playing a QB who passed as well as Barrett, but was no threat to run the ball (as Speight is not), Wisconsin wins that game easily.
October 16th, 2016 at 10:32 AM ^
to watch them try to deal with Jabrill Peppers at QB. He's probably a better thrower and runner than Barrett.
October 16th, 2016 at 10:44 AM ^
He's certainly a better thrower and runner that Hornybrook

stupid comments remain stupid. "Peppers is probably a better thrower and runner than Barrett." That is stupid with or without qualification. What criteria or motive other than trolling could jjustify that post?
October 16th, 2016 at 4:38 PM ^
they got killed by Barrett running. It was obvious he was going to be running and they could'nt tackle the guy. I have yet to see anyone really stop that but if anyone can, our defense can.

It looked like Chryst has been watching Michigan tape and adding plays to his packages.

The shifts and motions were straight out of our playbook. Chryst and Harbaugh are friends so there might have been a phone call made for tips this week

I don't think so. We could be playing them again in December.

Saw a lot of motions in the first half then it seemed to dissappear. I now have michigan winning that game.
October 16th, 2016 at 9:39 AM ^
Just so he could get on tape how OSU responded to certain looks and packages.
Guarantee it.
October 16th, 2016 at 10:39 AM ^
Wisconsin definitely added in the Receiver Jet Sweep against OSU and they absolutely cleaned up with it! Practice was carving that Defense up time after time. Harbaugh has employed this play early and often with high success. After last nights game, I'm feeling much more confident.
October 16th, 2016 at 10:54 AM ^
OSU didn't seem to jump the snap count on the jets sweep like Wiscy did against us on defense
October 16th, 2016 at 11:17 AM ^
That's been a staple of their offense for years. It's a good way to make the linebackers honest and force them not to sellout against their power running game.
October 16th, 2016 at 3:17 PM ^
Wisconsin has been using motion and jet sweeps for years. Dates back to the Bielema days, which of course involves Chryst as OC.
October 16th, 2016 at 8:35 AM ^
They didnt play not to lose like they did on the road at aa. UMs defense is the reason.Admittedly I didnt think wisconsin was that good, they played their best game of the year.
October 16th, 2016 at 8:55 AM ^
Buckeye of the beholder. UM shut down Clement and dominated, defensively. Errant throws caused by pressure: OSU figured out how to pressure the rookie with speed and watch for the run routes. UM's defense appears slightly better; OSU's QB is better be of mobility, but Speigjt is tough and accurate deep. The Game should be exciting this year.
October 16th, 2016 at 6:09 PM ^
Not sure if it was just on errors (will have to re-watch), but Bosa sure ran around (not "through", though) a couple of the interior OL a few times.
Not saying we don't have something similar on our DL, but he looked pretty fast.
Still was really surprised how much Wiscy gashed, outmuscled, and missed being tackled by OSU's front 7.
October 16th, 2016 at 10:19 AM ^
That's because they were playing a different team than the one they had to face in Ann Arbor.

OSU defense had a lot of speed, they close and pursue very well. We'll need some excellent play calling and throw some things that they aren't expecting.
October 16th, 2016 at 9:45 AM ^
On top of that, giving them some very different looks in the second half will be huge.
OSU is a highly talented, well coached team, as we are, and I would like nothing better than beating those MFers in Columbus.
