Well for places like Illinois or Purdue, you're not going to get an Urban Meyer/Jim Harbaugh type hire. You've got to hope to grab a good up and comer, or maybe a Pat Fitzgerald type who's an alum of the school and loves it more than anything, and you have to hope you can hold onto him long enough where he elevates your program to the next level.

That way whenever he does move on, your job opening is a bit more attractive.

I've thought that for years. And a lot of people say, "Well Bo did it...." Yes, Bo did it in the 1960's. There is no excuse for the Illinois, Wisconsin's, Nebraska's of the world to not be going after big names. Very few people can convince me Paul Chryst isn't the second coming of Brady Hoke.

I could be wrong, but some moves by Big Ten schools have been head scratchers the last ten years.

I don't expect them to get a Jim Harbaugh type coach. But hiring guys right out of the MAC these days seems like an awful idea. For God's sake Beckman wasn't even anything special at Toledo! Two 8-4 seasons at Toledo doesn't scream ''HIRE ME TO A BIG TEN PROGRAM!'' Neither does one 11-3 season at Kent State for Darell Hazell.

Well at least they can get a head start on coaching searches this for next season, but I'm not sure why they didn't make this move last December when they could've gone after two very legitimate coaches in Pat Narduzzi or Tom Herman. They went off to Pitt and Houston so it's not like Illinois would've been considered "out of their league" by making a run at those two.

Feel bad for the team, especially the freshmen. Their recruiting is going to go in a complete nosedive over the next few months. Every coach on that staff knows they're a dead man walking. Not even sure what you say to a recruit from here on out.

Hopefully they can get some really good up and comer next season who can stabilize the program. The Big Ten needs all the coaching firepower it can get.

Glad to see him go. When the full story comes out, it will probably be the end of his career. Guy's a POS.

So, does this hurt or help an already horrible team? Gotta think that it helps from a morale standpoint. Unfortunately, it likely won't be enough to get them to more than 3 or 4 wins. At least he's not going to get paid the rest of his money.

Tough time of year for this to happen, but happy the University took action and didn't let him stick around. No excuse for messing with player safety like that if the reports are true.

If Western wins 8 or 9 games this year they have to consider PJ Fleck.  Especially if he avoids blowouts against MSU and OSU.  Upon googling this I found that there is a ton of push for him in the twitterverse

I also wouldn't be surprised if Beckman sues and there ends up being some kind of out of court settlement for an undisclosed amount where both parties are allowed to pretend they did nothing wrong.

So this thread interested me and I decided to learn a little more about this great mean.

I didn't get past this:

"He scored a 14 on the ACT college board exam"

Tim Beckman was a lame duck coach anyways. But I'm believer if you're going to fire a coach do it after the season or do it in winter or before the spring game just my opinion. Bill Cubit is in for a long season I don't think he will have a good season beats the cupcakes but loses to everyone in Conf.
