Hoops Hello: Aubrey Dawkins
Aubrey Dawkins has committed to Michigan.
6-4 New Hampton wing Aubrey Dawkins has committed to Michigan, he confirmed to @FlyerHoops. Picked the Wolverines over the Flyers
— Matthew Schwade (@FlyerHoops) April 28, 2014
***NOTE: Sam Webb recently said Dawkins is closer to 6-6.
EDIT: Sam has a story out with some post-commit quotes from Dawkins:
“It was a tough decision, but a degree from Michigan carries more weight than one from Dayton,” Dawkins said. Not necessarily because it’s better academically, but because it’s Michigan.”
. . .
“They [the Michigan coaching staff] see me as a guy that is similar to Glenn Robinson… athletic, lean… just along those lines. They want me to play the wing spot.”
Getting more optimistic about next year by the day. Welcome Mr. Dawkins!
Welcome to Aubrey - the latest ex-NBA player's son to become a Michigan Man.
You're good. Beilein can make you great.
Love it....LOOOOOOVE IT!
I think so. Welcome, Aubrey.
Aubrey!
The highlight of this entire video is the Dakich dance montage at the one-minute mark.
I'm also a fan of Irvin saying "#21 on the court, #1 in your hearts.
Andrew Dakich is quickly becoming my favorite player on this team. His dances are hysterical.
Really like the pickup. Reminds me of GR-3. Might not have the same rankings, but remember that Beilein was after GR-3 before he was a 5*.
GRIII was just below 5* at this point, though. Dawkins is unranked. Slight difference.
Glenn Robinson III was a 5* on Rivals on the end of his senior year

I wasn't saying that Dawkins should be a 5* or that he could be as good as GR-III, just that Beilein sees what he likes in a guy and doesn't care about their rankings. Dawkins has a lot of the same traits as GR-III. I'm sure if Dawkins had been committed to UM for a year, he'd be ranked because the talent evaluation sites would've given him a second look.
Again, he's not as good as GR-3, but Beilein went after both guys despite rankings because they possess the traits he values. GR-3 ended up being a lot better.
Yes, he was a 5* at the end of his senior year. In April of his senior year, he was not.
/my nit of your nit
one Zack Novak had.
I know. I didn't say, "When GRIII committed." I said, "At this point." On April 28, 2012, GRIII was just below 5*.
It's getting a bit ridiculous how we keep getting NBA players' sons. Obviously they see in Beilein what WE see.
the state of which Dayton is in
totally agrees with ohio sucking it.
He's the son of Stanford men's basketball head coach Johnny Dawkins, who also played in the NBA (including a season for the Pistons).
I pretty much saw this coming when he said he'd choose the more prestigious academic experience between Michigan and Dayton. Welcome, Mr Dawkins.
Sure, it might be a bit late in the work day, but this news makes Monday just that much better and gets the week started on a much more upbeat note than last week ended. In any case, another quality pickup for Beilein's team - as someone mentioned quite rightly in the thread a few days ago, we are there and the idea now is to maintain this level of play somehow. Looks like we're doing just that. The future of hoops in Ann Arbor seems to continually look bright now.
Welcome to Michigan, Aubrey Dawkins!
belong to U of MI
This kid really wanted to focus on academics he choose the right school for it. I think he can come in and play right away.
6'4"? How tall is MAAR? Maybe Beilein is figures if he recruits just slightly shorter guys the NBA will wait 3 seasons to take them instead of 2.
MAAR is listed at 6-4 as well.
FWIW, Rivals guys seem to think that Dawkins is actually closer to 6'6"
Next year's recruiting may be really weird though. Without any early departures (ha ha) we only have one or two spots open, depending on Austin Hatch's status. The plus side is that we have no gaping holes on the roster in 2015-16. We should still have two point guards, a handful of SG/SFs, and 3-4 big men. Two Jalens and Trevor Manuel, please.
Next season will be very interesting. We won't be lacking depth.
Dude has gotten some serious bounce. Really looking forward to Michigan basketball yet again! In a related note, John Beilein is my hero.
Glad to see that the alley oop will remain in the playbook.
Read as far as "6-4 wing has committed to Michigan" and began to grin evily. 6-4 wing + John Beilein is a recipe for some fun.
Word is he measured 6'6ish last week on his visit so unless he shrunk here in 7 days, Coach will have to make do....
I'm excited about this commitment and wish Dawkins all the best in AA. Quick question - with his focus on academics, was the issue of him attending Stanford ever addressed?
Well he's certainly a project, but I guess it's good for depth.
True, but it can't be all 2 and 3 stars all the time either, and we're getting a lot of those lately.
JB wants some guys who will be here 4 years :)
