Hoke: "not sure about having a true spring game now"
I'd second that motion/notion. I know it'd be a bit demoralizing for the team, as the Spring Game is the formulation of all the work put in the previous three weeks, but there are other important factors at play thus far in the Football year, one being keeping people healthy for a run at a Big Ten Championship this Autumn.
Any way we can take a page from Wisconsin and find someone who graduated with one year of eligibilty left?
I think maybe Greg Paulus is available
Oh how I do not miss the situation we were in 4 years ago.
That doesn't work so well for someone you hope doesn't see the field.
Surely there's some QB somewhere who wasn't granted a fifth year scholarship we could nab.
Unless that person wants a free year of grad school at Michigan.
Does Cone have any eligibility left? How about Sheridan subbing in as a GA? /s
He said he's not sure. Didn't say no. There's still a chance. The Maize team needs to get redemption after 3 straight years of losing to the Blue and now down in the series 28-26. They led before the 2010 game.
Since the QB's are wearing Red Jerseys and wont be touched anyways, why not have them rotate equally on each team. Would be more fun for everyone and equal to both sides.
Somehow I think Bellomy was wearing some sort of red jersey in practice and probably taking zero contact, yet he managed to tear his ACL. In any way possible, at this point, we need to limit the opportunity for flukey injuries to happen.
Yes. I think that Devin Gardner should probably sit out the rest of spring practice. We wouldn't want him to tear his ACL.
Edit: In fact, in light of the Jake Ryan thingy, perhaps no one should practice, ever.
"...no one should practice, ever."
This. Thank you for agreeing! INJURIES, MAN!
ACL injuries are almost always a non-contact situation. You plant your leg to decelerate and you foot gets caught in the turf...boom there it goes. It's a freak accident and just an unlucky thing for Bellomy and Ryan.
Not to be douchey corrector guy, but highly doubt the jerseys are red. Hoke wouldn't even wear red when he coached at schools whose primary colors were red. Don't think he'd let his team wear it.
more reps for him!
While obviously in jest, I don't see how that would solve the problem. You would be putting Gardner in for more reps (thus increasing the risk of injury) and preventing your backups from getting ready in case Gardner does in fact get hurt.
What backups? I would be willing to bet that someone, even if it's someone from a smaller school, will have a fifth year, a bachelor's degree, and enough talent to justify a scholly to play backup in 2013.
Maybe I should change "I would be willing to bet" to "I hope."
we have 2 walkon qb's on the roster. Based on the only performence I seen from Bellomy how much worse could they be?
I'd wrap DG in bubble wrap and home school him for the rest of the year.
In this case, I think common sense should prevail. Can we set up a rotating weather watch to warn him if there is snow, ice or wet pavement on his way to class? Police escort if he has to cross a street of course. Designated book carriers and a food taster?
Let's help Coach Hoke and Dave Brandon with some alternative ideas, to substitute for a Spring football game:
- 11-on-11 full-field basketball.
- Flag football game, instead of tackle, with Devin Gardner riding a stationary bike on the sidelines.
- Video feed from Virginia, watching Derrick Green in American History class.
- Lacrosse (see Number 1).
- Barbecue at the Big House, with three-legged races (Devin Gardner would be up in the Jack Roth Stadium club on a stationary bike) and egg roll.
- All-university QB tryouts for the #4 spot on the depth chart. UM-Flint and UM-Dearborn students invited.
- Host Slippery Rock Spring Game.
- Invite Gerry DiNardo, Howard Griffith and Dave Revsine to talk about how great Michigan will be in 2013. For three and a half hours.
- Singalong concert featuring Journey.
- Pinata party featuring Michael Rosenberg and Mark Snyder. Free beer and open bar, starting at 7 am.
- Did you see what can happen to your legs when you play basketball???
- Those bikes can be dangerous. In fact, outdoors is dangerous. Keep everyone inside.
- This one has merit.
- I want no sticks being waved around in the general direction of anyone.
- I hope someone is testing these eggs for salmonella before they get near anyone, even if they aren't meant to be eaten.
- This one is inevitable.
- Hey, why not?
- Don't we get enough hype just for a horrible letdown without this? Think of the fanbase's health, too!
- Ew, Journey
- Again with this swinging sticks??
Any way you want it...
#7 would actually be an awesome tradition. Wish that was allowed. Seems like the NCAA will pretty much agree to any suggestion without much informed debate (see recruiting rules that 100% of coaches hated) so it would probably be pretty easy to convince them.
....but there was an announcement today regarding the donation incentive scheme for the Spring Game, so the department may very well be choosing to go ahead with something, at least for for the moment anyway. It also mentions that the scrimmage will be streamed on BTN2Go at 1 PM and broadcast on BTN at 9 PM that Saturday.
Kyle Meinke updated a story today as well to say that Brian Cleary may very well be featured as the number two option at QB in the spring game (if they indeed go through with it).
and can he play QB?
he's the next 'Harry Newman: QB,...24-1-2 record' ? if so, get him out there!
but...but
Oh well, I'll catch it on BTN.
If I were Hoke I wouldn't want to do a full Spring game at this point either.
There is no way Hoke will RS Morris if he plays well in Summer camp. He will be the back up this fall. This will give him plenty of experience with the offense before he takes over in his Junior year. I think Michigan will be in good shape with Devin as starter and Shane as the back up for the next two years.
Thomas Gordon to play QB for the spring game?
