Harbaugh says error made in Schembechler vetting process

Harbaugh provides details of how the “mistake” was made.

Too many people wanted to jump to blame someone in these situations including Warde and Harbaugh.  That includes whomever wrote that long post about “don’t blame Warde, blame Harbaugh” because they happen to be an expert and work in an AD department. As I said it was a mistake. Here are the relevant details.

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh said on Thursday that a mistake was made during the vetting process in the recent hire of Bo Schembechler's son.

"Once I became aware of things that were offensive -- offensive to me, offensive to other members of our team -- [we acted]," Harbaugh said, according to MLive.com. "We didn't want that mindset around."

"I read the report myself," Harbaugh said. "We have a company that vets that -- social media -- and they came back and [cleared him]. We've got a new company doing that [now], but they've got to be better.

"I'll take responsibility for that," he said. "If somebody can find that in a day, then we have to be better ourselves."

I expect nothing less from Jim as described above.   We are all lucky to have a coach with this level of integrity and character

The book is a great reminder to stop blaming other people...

Don't like a decision from management?  You must not have done a good enough job articulating your case.

Don't like a decision from a peer?  You must not have built a strong enough relationship where they understand your perspective.

Don't like a decision from a subordinate?  You must not have clearly articulated importance to them.

Obviously, YOU aren't at fault for everything, but when you start with the framework of looking inward first, you'll be in a much better place.

I just started the Executive MBA program at Wharton, and there are several members of my cohort who are either current or retired special forces, including at least one Navy Seal. He is a badass motherfucker who takes care of business, and I have no doubt he is going to be successful in whatever he sets his mind to.

I wonder what the reaction will be of the folks who argued Shemy was being unfairly targeted for his politics and just “liking a few tweets”. Now that Harbaugh has demonstrably rebuked those views as offensive, are they going to go out with angry pitchforks against Harbaugh? I guess they’ll tune into Steve Deace’s podcast to form their opinions

So wait, there was an actual company hired to review his social media and somehow missed all ~3000 offensive likes, retweets, etc? Yikes

They probably just do a routine search as part of an HR consulting package. Those companies are grifters that sell you common sense and package it as innovation.

They're really just there so Michigan doesn't catch heat for firings and fuck ups.

Not surprising they failed miserably.

Background check companies are a cesspool. They either rubberstamp everyone, or don’t lift a finger to verify anything.

My current job, when I was in the background check process, the company doing the checking didn’t do anything. They were ready to hand in a report which basically said “we’re not even sure if PopeLando exists - he definitely doesn’t have a permanent residence nor any employment history.”

It took the TA/HR rep who offered me to basically redo the work themselves.

Kind of refreshing to see someone take ownership of a mistake, even though they personally did everything they thought they were supposed to do.  We need more of that in this world. I'm not one for the torch and pitchforks, but the name of the company should be disclosed. There's being bad at your job and then there's what happened here.

It's spelled Hatbaugh, maybe the moms will fix it for you.

The company that vets social media is either bad at their job or saw nothing wrong with what was liked.

I'd like to believe this. But you're going to tell me the guy had extreme views like that and people didn't know it about him? Maybe. But unlikely.

Read Harbaugh’s statement.  He 100% acknowledges he’s known Shemy his whole life but had no idea his politics were so extreme & offensive.

”That’s not us.  That’s not who we are.”

Pretty damn emphatic rebuke if you ask me.  God I love our coach.

Or harbaugh knew that the guy was a Republican, and had no issue with it because one shouldn’t automatically eliminate friends or job applicants just because those people are from a different party. But, knowing that someone is a Republican doesn’t equate to knowing that the person is a racist, hateful piece of shit. And once he learned that about Shemmy, harbaugh found it to be unacceptable and cut ties.
