Hackett: get used to multiple night games in future

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

I'm a 3:30-kickoff hater. Shouldn't have complained as hard.

!!!! RT @nickbaumgardner: Hackett still says home night games against Michigan State/Ohio State not off the table. No decision yet, though.

Eh. At least schedule the night games earlier in the season when it is hot. This way we aren't playing during the hottest part of the day and the fans wont have to endure the cold of November without a bit of sun to warm them up.

I used to despise 3:30 starts.  But I've changed my mind since noon starts these days means the student section is about 50% at kickoff.  We'll get about 70% of the students at a 3:30 kickoff now.

I'm not opposed to more than one night game.  Nebraska almost always takes their 3 biggest home games and makes them ALL at night.

But OSU at night still doesn't feel right to me.

I've been told to quiet down at a game before bro. I've been to several games where people all around me were listening via headphones and reading the fucking paper. The big house was so much louder than I have ever experienced at both night games. Big ten conference games are louder than non conference games but still can sometimes be on the quiet end. We have the biggest stadium in the country, it should sound like it every game that isn't a cupcake blowout.

Multiple night games = much louder big house. Thank you Hackett!! Maybe now opposing coaches won't call the big house "the quietest 114,000 in sports"

Because I live in Korea, I love night games. They are the only time that doesn't make me awake at an ungodly hour on a Saturday night, which often forces me to give up going out. However, I wouldn't like them so much if I was home. The main reason I hated 330 games when I had season tickets was that besides missing all the 330 games around the country, I would miss at least the second half of all noon games as well.

Why is it that every time the notion of us playing more than one night game a year comes up people turn into 80 year olds?

First of all, even a night game against Ohio State would be in November.  It's not January which somehow teams like NE, Chicago, and Green Bay seem to be able to pull it off without mass hypothermia cases.

Secondly, God forbid we have a night game because of the mass riots and looting that seem to break out with any game that ends after the sun goes down.  If the good folks in Baton Rouge and Tallahassee can seem to control their desire to burn their cities to the ground, I'm sure we will be fine.

I respect that some people simply prefer playing at noon.  I'm cool with that, but some of the most common arguments against night games are absurd.  The fact is the best teams play in front of the whole nation during the 3:30 slot or prime time.  That's where I want to be.  Noon is for MAC games and Purdue.

It's very simple... Lesser nonconference game against MAC team, Rutgers, Maryland, Purdue, etc: noon MSU, PSU, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Iowa etc: 3:30/night We don't need to schedule night games just to have night games like MSU did with whoever they played on Friday last year against an FCS team. I'd even be okay with OSU at 3:30 if we were both good enough like in 2006.

More night games means fewer reasons to go for me.  I live 50 miles away and an 8PM start means I get home at 2AM.  I'd do it once a year at most.  After Oct 15 you run the real risk of coldor otherwise crappy weather.  We saw what happened at MSU when the stadium emptied out in the 2d half against Nebraska or was it OSU because it was cold and dark.  We have to recognize that all of sports is increasingly being driven by TV money.  Ad rates for top notch sports events are sky high because it is the only programming most everybody watches live as opposed to DVRing and skipping the commercials.   So the live crowd is becoming increasingly less important to sports businesses.

Why is noon such a bad time?   I don't get the facisnation with all these late games.    Suit up and play the damn game.  And students need to just show up regardless of the time.  Put down the phones, stop with the tweets, head up from the tablets.  Goodness I sound like an old man and I am not even in my 30s.

Who wants to get up at 6am on a Saturday to go to a game?  I want to sleep in a few minutes, watch a little Gameday and ease into a nice Saturday while watching Indiana vs Rutgers.

I don't mean to sound like a prick to the noon fans but Michigan has no business playing any time before 3:30.  I appreciate tradition but sometimes tradition is the enemy of progress and NOBODY thinks playing at noon is cool anymore.

You just mentioned us. Noon fans. Getting up early is part of the fun. Leaving when it's dark out and coming back when it's dark out at night. That's how you do it. Your whole day you're on pins and needles waiting in agony for the game. 3:30 or night. Night games are awful. They cater to everyone but the fans imo. Who in the fuck wants to see Michigan-Northwestern at night? That game should be at noon.

Not every game will be a night game. But half could be, for me. I love the anticipation. I love the event that it becomes in my house. I've got two small kids. If it's at noon I end up listening to it while I'm running them to soccer/piano/whatever. If it's a 3:30 or 8:00 kick its an event my family can plan on.

We should be playing at least 4 noon games.   Last year we played one.  Playing teams like Miami(Ohio), Indiana, and Maryland at 3:30 is dumb to me.

I am far from a morning person, but there are many times where I can barely sleep in anticipation/nervousness for a game.

I guess I like knowing we won and going on with my day.

Sweet. I have been to all the night games and loved the atmosphere each time. I think it is a great experience for the majority of fans at the game, as well as for the even larger majority watching on TV. I agree that it needs to be a big game to keep it special, but I am fine with 1-2 per year.

Having kids of my own playing football, soccer, etc.. on Saturdays from now through eternity...  gives me more chances to attend games...

I'd pass on a night game with State. We all know what that fanbase is like and we don't want them drinking all day long in Ann Arbor; it could be a dangerous situation.

Night games. I haven't seen the numbers but it just seems that the advantage is escalated. Also the energy and focus on the game seems bigger for television. I'd love to have more!

Thanks Hackket!

then make it a night game.  I enjoy a couple night games a year, but wouldn't want to see a night game just because.  I personally enjoy 3:30 games, part of the fun on Saturday is setting up a tailgate with your friends/family and having a good time with other Michigan fans.  12:00 games just don't allow you much time for a good tailgate.

Pros: More money Wider exposure Player satisfication (believe it or not, they're in it for the above) More raucous crowd The cold as home field advantage Cons: Very drunk fans Nighttime driving Loss of tradition 19 year olds who can't dress themselves Replacing old men sitting on their hands with loud and obnoxious fans screaming at the top of their lungs

I get to sell my tickets to someone who enjoys them. September and October belong to me. November not so much. Night games mean a motel. Not inexpensive options. Disappointed.
